<p><span class="fs-17 fg-mustard bold">For Reading and Meditation:</span><br><span class="italic">     <span class="scriptRef" ref="isa+40:1-11">Isaiah 40:1-11</span></span></p><p>What do we mean when we say that the Bible is "inspired"? There are various views. One is natural inspiration - that the Bible is inspired in the same way that any work of genius is, like Pilgrim's Progress for example. Another view is of partial inspiration, which claims that the Bible is not a scientific textbook and therefore cannot be trusted in scientific matters, such as the origin of the species. It is, however, to be trusted in matters that relate to salvation. The third view can be described as dictational inspiration - that God dictated the Bible to its writers verbatim, as a businessman would dictate a letter to a secretary. The fourth view is of verbal inspiration, which holds that every word in the Bible came from the mouth of God. The fifth and final view is of supervisal inspiration - that nothing is included in the Bible which God did not want there and nothing is omitted which was meant to have a place in the sacred book. I hold to the last view - supervisal inspiration. I rule out natural inspiration and partial inspiration, but not necessarily dictational inspiration, at least in part. Large sections of the Bible were personally dictated to men by God, the Ten Commandments being just one example. The writers of the Bible were, I believe, divinely indemnified against errors of observation, lapses of memory, and unintentional misrepresentation of facts. Their writings were honest, accurate, and supervised by the Holy Spirit before being compiled into this wonderful book we call the Bible. No wonder it is often referred to as the "book of books." </p><p class="center-it italic bold mlr40 mtb20">O God, I know Your Word is inspired, for it inspires me. Help me to have Your Word hidden in my heart so deeply that it becomes the hidden spring of action, determining my conduct and my character. In Jesus' Name. <p><span class="fs-17 fg-mustard bold">For Reading and Meditation:</span><br><span class="italic">     <span class="scriptRef" ref="lu+24:13-35">Luke 24:13-35</span></span></p><p>The Bible is unique in its varied penmanship. The Scriptures were written over a period of some fifteen hundred years by about forty different penmen, and yet although of such composite character, the book displays an amazing and essential unity. The most wonderful thing about the written Word is that woven through it from end to end, like a golden thread, the living Word can be observed. Nowhere can this be seen more clearly than in the account of the historic walk to Emmaus, when Luke tells us that "beginning with Moses [he could not go further back in the Bible than that!] and all the Prophets, [Christ] explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself" (v. 27). Christ in all the Scriptures! There you have the mystery of the Bible compressed into a single phrase. Imagine picking up a book written by such contributors as Shakespeare, John Donne, John Bunyan, John Locke, Isaac Newton, Jeremy Taylor, as well as many unknown writers, and then finding it is a complete biography of Sir Winston Churchill. One would turn its pages in utter amazement. Yet we discover something similar when we read the pages of our Bible. Herein lies its uniqueness. Those forty different authors did not know when they were writing that they were putting together a book that tells us as no other the full story of the Lord Jesus Christ. Whatever other faiths claim for their books - that they were inspired or dictated by God - the Bible, so all Christians believe, is God's one and only published work. </p><p class="center-it italic bold mlr40 mtb20">O Father, it is no surprise that so much of Jesus comes out of the Bible when so much of Him has gone into it. And the more I see of Him in its pages, the more I see there is to be seen. And the more I want to see. Thank You, my Father. We speak of Alexander the Great, Charles the Great, and Peter the Great but never Jesus the Great. And why? Because He dwells in a sphere where no real comparisons are possible. It simply doesn't seem right to use the designation "the Great" of our Lord as we would of others. Our Lord has no peers, no rivals, and no successors. He is so different from every other leader, so unique, so superior, that He qualifies for a place on His own. The things He said about God are not the same as the sayings of any other religious teacher. The claims He made for Himself are unparalleled. His analysis of human society goes deeper and is more devastating than that pronounced by any other man. The challenges and demands He made on His followers are more searching than those put forward by anyone - past and present. As James Francis said of Him: "He never wrote a book, never held an office, never had a family, never went to college, never did any of the things that usually accompany greatness. But ... He is the centerpiece of the human race and the leader of its column of progress. "I am within the mark when I say that all the armies that have ever marched, all the navies that were ever built, all the parliaments that have ever sat, all the kings that have ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of people upon this earth as powerfully as has that one solitary life." </p><p class="center-it italic bold mlr40 mtb20">Jesus, my Lord and my God, all the descriptions of You fall short of defining Your real glory and worth. Yet my soul recognizes, even though it cannot put it into words, the glory that belongs to You by sovereign right. I love You Lord Jesus. With all my heart. <p>THE word of our God is like His nature, immutably the same; He saith, "My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my mouth." Believer, this is thy comfort; every promise is confirmed and shall be fulfilled. But what hath He said? He hath said, "Though your sins be as scarlet they shall be white as snow. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivereth him out of them all. No weapon formed against thee shall prosper. I will strengthen thee, I will help thee. I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. No good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly." All that He saith cometh surely to pass. Not one jot or title can fail. He never spake hastily, insincerely, or unwisely; He has drawn His plan, given His word, and every thing shall answer the end He had in view. Man may be disappointed, God cannot. Man may change his mind, or break his word, but God cannot. He abideth faithful, He cannot deny Himself. Trust, and be not afraid.</p><p class="mlr40 italic">The word of God shall still endure,<br> Faithful, immutable, and sure:<br> This solid rock shall never break,<br> Though earth should to her centre shake.<br> And while it stands we should not fear,<br> For all we need is promised there.</p>

<p>The contrast really intended here is not between the word of God and the grass of the field; for there are many other things to share with Scripture the honor of out-living the flowers of earth. In one sense the Bible resembles the grass of the field; if by great efforts the latter be rooted up and cast into the fire, much time will not elapse before that same spot is seen verdant again with a new growth. And many rulers have sought to destroy the crop of Bibles sown in their do minions, but have spent their strength for nought. The contrast is really between man, his works and his glory, and the word of God. Like grass, man shall wither; like the flower, his glory shall pass away; but the word of our God endureth forever. </p><p>Even so, Isaiah! The word of God uttered by thee has come down to us through twenty-five troubled centuries, serenely riding out the storms of every generation, and beholding the wreck of many empires. Whilst thou wert writing thine unnoticed page, stupendous monuments were being erected here and there in the world; but ruin has long since overtaken these. During seventy generations the providence of God has steadily corroborated thy statements, and shown that the nations, before God, are nothing, less than nothing and vanity. </p><p>With what avidity would men drink in the intelligence that a plant had been discovered whose fruit conferred immortality. With what a frantic joy would they precipitate themselves to ward that stray plant of heaven found upon the earth. But the word of God really possesses and really communicates immortality. It endures forever, and he who embraces it by faith, endures forever. It is the word of life; and nothing shall by any means harm them who have made it their own. In the last day, when there shall be a terrific overthrow of the pomp, pride, and strength of man, the word of God, so oft rejected, so much despised upon the earth, will be seen upon the throne of God, and all the friends of that word around about the throne. Ye neologians and rationalists, and all who have sought to draw the pen of unhallowed criticism through this or that text, how will you stand confounded when you see indestructible life and glory belonging to the word of God. You will feel as though you had been detected in an attempt to murder angels, beings possessing the life of heaven. </p>

Daily Light on the Daily Path or Daily Light is a Christian daily devotional scripture reading published by Bagster & Sons about 1875. It has been reprinted continually since then. It consists of brief groupings of scripture passages which speak to prominent Biblical themes—two themes (morning and evening) for each day of the year.
