Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and people came and said to him, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” Jesus said to them, “The wedding guests cannot fast while the bridegroom is with them, can they? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day. “No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old cloak; otherwise, the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost, and so are the skins; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins.” 
 
Reflection 
Jesus loved to eat. So did his disciples. They seemed to be eating all the time, even on days when people traditionally fasted. This confused the people who observed them. “The disciples of the Pharisees fast,” they said to Jesus. “So do John the Baptist’s disciples. How come your disciples don’t?” Fasting was required twice weekly and generally considered to be an indication of holiness. Therefore, the implication was that Jesus’ disciples were not very holy. Consequently, Jesus was not very holy. But the question is: why weren’t the disciples observing the fast? 
 
Because Scripture didn’t demand it! The law of Moses specifically required fasting for only one occasion—the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16:29-30; Numbers 29:7). However, the Pharisees decided to make fasting a practice required twice a week. And eventually, the practice became steeped in tradition. Tradition is not a bad thing — it helps us apply God’s laws to our lives in fruitful ways — but it becomes bad when it contradicts Scripture. If we are not careful, we might be guilty of making the same mistake. 
 
Anyway, in typical fashion, Jesus tells them that nobody fasts when it is time to celebrate; his disciples would fast when the time was right. But he wasn’t trying to make a point about fasting; it was about something more important. To illustrate this, Jesus told two parables. In the first, he said that you don’t sew new unshrunk cloth on an old cloak because the patch would shrink and cause an even greater tear. These days with synthetics, cloth shrinking isn’t a problem, but cloth shrunk when washed in those days. And in the second parable, he said you don’t put new wine into old wineskins because as the wine fermented, gasses built up. This build-up of gasses would stretch the wineskin, making them burst. 
 
What was the point? The point is that there was an old way of doing things, which were the practices of Judaism itself. And there was a new way, which Jesus was bringing in himself. You cannot mix the two without terrible consequences. You cannot mix a legalistic system based on self-righteousness with a gospel of grace where salvation is obtained through unmerited favor. Therefore, when we read the word of God, especially the gospels, let us reflect on them in the context of the new covenant, not the old. 
 
And, by the way, fasting is a good thing. But don’t do it to gain brownie points in heaven.

January 18, 2021 - New Wine - A Reflection on Mark 2:18-22

Scripture Reading: John 1:35-42 
The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, “Look, here is the Lamb of God!” The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon. One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated Anointed). He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter). 
 
Reflection 
In today's passage, we find John the Baptist introducing Jesus to two of his disciples as "the Lamb of God." "Look," he says, "here is the Lamb of God!" (John 1:35). The day before, Jesus had come to John to be baptized. And as Jesus approached him then, John had said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29). Why did John refer to Jesus as a lamb? Why was he God's lamb? And how could a lamb take away the sin of the world? To understand this, we need to look at some Old Testament traditions. 
 
The Israelites made many offerings made to God — burnt offerings, grain offerings, offerings of well-being. They also made an offering in atonement for their sins. This was known as the sin offering. Once a year, the penitent sinner would go to the priest with an animal that was "without blemish." The priest would sacrifice this animal on behalf of the sinner (see Leviticus 4:35). Why was an animal required to be sacrificed? Because the wages of sin is death (see Romans 6:23a). For our sins, we deserve to die. But God doesn't want us to perish, so he allowed for a substitutionary sacrifice: an animal. 
 
"But why?" you may ask. "Why can't God just forgive?" Because God is just. And justice demands retribution. "So, why does blood need to be shed?" As Scripture says, "without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness" (Hebrews 9:22) because "life is in the blood" (Leviticus 17:11). Now, these sacrifices of the Old Testament were a temporary covering of sin. A better, more permanent way was necessary. Enter Jesus, the "Lamb of God." By coming to live with us as a human, and leading a life "without blemish" — without sin! — he became the perfect sacrifice of love. And not only did he secure forgiveness for all time, but he also gave us the power to lead lives without sin through his Holy Spirit. 
 
There are many other references to lamb in the Old Testament. A notable one is the tradition concerning the Passover lamb. If you recall, the Israelites were slaves of Egypt. After many years of captivity, God sent Moses to Pharaoh with the message to let his people go. Despite several signs, Pharaoh refused to listen. Finally, God told Moses to have each family kill an unblemished lamb and paint the doorposts with its blood. That night, the Angel of Death "passed over" these homes but took the lives of the firstborn unprotected by the blood of the lamb. Because of this, Pharaoh finally gave the Israelites their freedom. Now, think about Jesus again, and see what this might mean to us as Christians. 
 
Let me end with a reference to a lamb by the prophet Isaiah. "He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth" (Isaiah 53:7). Remind you of anyone?

January 17, 2021 - The Lamb of God - A Reflection on John 1:35-42

Scripture Reading: Mark 2:13-17. 
Jesus went out again beside the sea; the whole crowd gathered around him, and he taught them. As he was walking along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him. 
And as he sat at dinner in Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were also sitting with Jesus and his disciples—for there were many who followed him. When the scribes of the Pharisees saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, they said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”When Jesus heard this, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.” 
When reading the gospels, I am sure that many of you, like me, have condemned the Pharisees for their actions. And what actions are these? Oh, there are many. Let's talk about the one in the passage we are reflecting upon. We find the Pharisees condemning not just the sinners but also Jesus. They were judging Jesus for associating with people who they considered despicable and disreputable. 
 
Reflection: 
Have we ever found ourselves looking down on people who don't belong to our circle: someone we consider a sinner or someone from another community or belief system? Have we been judgemental toward those who don't go to our church? Or, if they do, have we been judgemental toward those who belong to another ministry? Scripture asks us not to pass judgment on one another, but resolve instead to never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of another (see Romans 14:13). 
 
What does this kind of judgment do? It blocks the love and compassion we need to have for others. What did Jesus do when he met sinners? He accepted them with love. With love and acceptance comes healing and even a desire to change. And as we see here, this passage speaks not only of Matthew following him but several other sinners. Would being judgemental and staying away from them have helped? 
 
Paul says, "Live in harmony with one another; do not be proud, but associate with the lowly" (Romans 12:16). We can do this only if we see Christ in everyone. We are expected to see Christ in the poor, the needy, the sick, and those in prison (see Matthew 25:45). Many of us are also spiritually poor, prisoners of sin, and in need of healing. Jesus says, "Those who are well have no need of a physician but those who are sick, I have come to call not the righteous but the sinners" (Mark 2:17). 
 
Our judgment of people blinds us. It hardens our hearts, similar to what happened to the Pharisees. If we do the same, do you think that the Pharisee in us will be able to see Christ in all?

January 16, 2021 - The Pharisee in Us - A Reflection on  Mark 2:13-17

Scripture Reading: Mark 2:1-12 
When he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. So many gathered around that there was no longer room for them, not even in front of the door; and he was speaking the word to them. Then some people came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. And when they could not bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and after having dug through it, they let down the mat on which the paralytic lay. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, “Why does this fellow speak in this way? It is blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” At once Jesus perceived in his spirit that they were discussing these questions among themselves; and he said to them, “Why do you raise such questions in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Stand up and take your mat and walk’? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— “I say to you, stand up, take your mat and go to your home.” And he stood up, and immediately took the mat and went out before all of them; so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!” 
 
Reflection 
An excellent way of meditating upon stories in the Bible is to put yourself in the shoes of every character in the story, both major and minor. We can learn many lessons using this method. Today’s passage is an ideal example. There are six players in this story, including groups of people. One, the paralytic. Two, his friend. Three, the three friends of the friend. Four, Jesus. Five, the scribes. And six, the crowd. If we put ourselves in the shoes of the paralytic and think about it, we might realize that although we are not paralyzed physically, we may be crippled emotionally or spiritually. What do we do? Well, we need to go to Jesus! 
 
If we put ourselves in the place of the friend, we might realize that we rarely exert any effort to take our friends to Jesus, even though we see them suffering. Reflecting upon this might give us the impetus to do so. If we put ourselves in the shoes of the friend’s friends, we might realize that we don’t lend our support to those who are trying to help others, and consequently, be determined to lend a hand in the future. If we put ourselves in the place of the scribes, we might realize how often we go to listen to preachers and teachers, not to learn from them but to judge them. 
 
If we put ourselves in the place of Jesus, we might realize how unwilling we are to let ourselves be inconvenienced by people. Jesus allowed crowds of people to pack his house. Yes, this was his house! I don’t know why we seem to think that Jesus didn’t have a house of his own!) But not only did he allow people to fill his house, he made no protest when some of them began to dismantle his roof! Even though he was a carpenter by profession, who could fix it again, it would certainly take him some time to do so. Yet, he didn’t seem to mind because he felt that here was a tremendous teaching opportunity. 
 
If we put ourselves in the place of the crowd, we might realize how selfish we are in nature. There were people who tried to enter with a friend who was paralyzed, yet they made no effort to make place for them. Quite obviously there was place in the house if a man could be lowered into their midst, but they wanted to be comfortable with Jesus. Did anything he say change their hearts and lives? Did the miracle they witnessed serve to make them realize that God was in their midst? 
 
Let us reflect deeply upon the word of God if we are to be changed.

January 15, 2021 - Deep Thinking - A Reflection on Mark 2:1-12

Scripture Reading: Mark 1:40-45. 
A leper came to him begging him, and kneeling, he said to him, “If you choose, you can make me clean.” Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, and said to him, “I do choose. Be made clean!” Immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. After sternly warning him he sent him away at once, saying to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” But he went out and began to proclaim it freely, and to spread the word, so that Jesus could no longer go into a town openly, but stayed out in the country; and people came to him from every quarter.  The Gospel of the Lord   
 
Reflection: 
This is a curious story, isn't it? There are so many stories of great healing in the Bible and yet this one stands out for me, because of the way in which the leper frames his request. “IF you choose, you can make me clean”, he says – and you can tell that he’s either a person of great faith… or an excellent negotiator! Let me rephrase that to explain what I mean. This leper is basically saying, “Jesus, if you don’t cleanse me, I will understand that it’s because you choose not to.” There is absolutely NO doubt in the mind of the man that Jesus CAN cleanse him. So if he doesn’t cleanse him, it will be simply because Jesus chose not to.  
 
Now consider this – when we go to Jesus to be cleansed, how do we present ourselves to him, and what do we say? The kneeling leper is someone we can draw inspiration from for our own repentance journey. He kneels before Jesus, but a little way off (Notice how Jesus has to stretch out his hand to touch him?). He knows he is not worthy to be close to Jesus, nor that he is owed anything, but his faith has brought him there. He knows that there is nothing that Jesus cannot cleanse, and we too must believe that there is no sin that Jesus cannot wash away. When we ask to be cleansed of our sin, we must ask with the attitude of the leper –– knowing that it is only through Jesus’ choice of mercy that we are saved. 
 
As St. Paul wrote in his letter to the Ephesians, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God— not the result of works, so that no one may boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9)  And now consider Jesus’ response. It seems to have been a no-brainer for him – he stretches out his hand even before he says, “I do choose". But when we make a choice, there is always a reason for it – we choose metal straws over plastic ones because they’re good for the planet, we choose juice over cola because it’s the healthier option… you get the idea. So there must've been a reason for Jesus’ choice too. Even though it may seem like it was only that Jesus was “moved by pity”, there was another reason that we might have easily missed –– that the leper asked to be cleansed! 
 
There seem to be no other reasons for Jesus’ choice, besides the two – the leper is saved by Jesus’ grace, and through his own faith, not by anything that he has done.  And so, for Jesus to choose to cleanse us of our sins, it is also our own choice that matters – our choice of asking to be cleansed and changed, instead of clinging to our sins and leprous lifestyles.So the next time we think we’ve messed up so bad that the spots on our soul will be permanent, let the choice to reach out to Jesus for cleansing be a no-brainer – like the choice between wearing a mask, and getting Covid-19!

January 14, 2021 - NO BRAINER! - A Reflection on Mark 1:40-45.

Scripture Reading: Mark 1:29-32 
“As soon as they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them. That evening, at sunset, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. And the whole city was gathered around the door. And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. And Simon and his companions hunted for him. When they found him, they said to him, “Everyone is searching for you.” He answered, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do.” And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons.” 
 
Reflection: 
Why is there sickness and disease, when there is God? There are several answers out there to this question, and the one to which you could pay attention to is that sickness is a consequence of original sin. This should explain that sickness or disease was not God’s plan when he created man. Yet, the love of God, which reaches us through Christ, brings us freedom from all consequences of sin, including sickness. Jesus is not unaware of the pain and anguish suffered by a person who battles with sicknesses or diseases. Nor is He is unaware of the rejection and isolation from families and communities faced by some, due to dangerous diseases or infections such as the Corona Virus. 
 
The absence of love and compassion, care and protection in such struggling moments can make a person go into despair or even lack interest in living anymore. Jesus is not blind to these realities either. In His mission on earth, the Son of God reveals Himself as the Divine Healer, who desires to grant healing to the sick and freedom to the possessed. It is no surprise that even doctors encourage patients or caregivers to put their trust in God in times when medical help reaches its limit. For nothing is impossible for God. 
 
The sick who has received God’s healing has had a personal encounter with the tender love and mercy of God. Jesus manifested this truth when He literally took Simon’s mother-in-law by the hand and lifted her up, and with this personal healing touch of the Son of God the fever left her. By the authority of His command, demons left the people whom they possessed. These divine realities which Jesus brought about while preaching the good news attracted people to Him in large numbers. So much so that His disciples were frantically looking for him because there were many others searching for Jesus. But was this also the plan that Jesus had in mind? 
 
The stark reality of our salvation reminded in today’s gospel is that we should never be satisfied by being receivers of miracles and wonders from The Lord, but live as those who follow Jesus as doers of His word. Jesus does not give-in to public demand, and with his disciples moves on to the next town to preach the message of salvation. If you have experienced the mighty healing power of Jesus, then like Simon’s mother-in-law, serve the Lord and your neighbour with renewed faith and strength in the Lord. May our focus be on the message of salvation. Signs and wonders such as healing of the sick and freedom from evil spirits shall surely follow.

Scripture Reading: Mark 1:21-28

Reflection: 
The term ‘famous’ usually denotes people (or objects or places) that are prominent, popular, and powerful. Famous personalities constantly adorn pages of glossy magazines, flash fancy gadgets, rule social media, dictate fashion trends & health fads, and endorse expensive brands. They ensure their visibility at all the ‘right’ places and have a point of view to share on everything under the sun, basically leaving no stone unturned to always keep themselves in the limelight. Else, with all the competition around, they just might slide into obscurity and lose out on that much sought for space in the hall of fame that provides them their identity. 
 
If we look at today’s first reading and gospel passage, we have Jesus, the Holy One of God, who stepped down from Heaven and for a little while was made lower than the angels to fulfill the will of his Father. Being God himself, he spoke with authority and nobody could question his teachings. However, he never sought attention for himself but gave all credit to his Father (see John 5:19). He regularly went off by himself to lonely places to pray and spent time away from the crowds (see Matthew 14:23, Mark 1:35, Luke 5:16). 
 
Despite being King of Kings and Lord of Lords, not once did he choose to rule over others or to be served, but came only to serve (See Mark 10:45). And when evil spirits shouted out loudly declaring who he actually was, he always silenced them, like he did today. He deserved every kind of adulation and more, but he consciously steered clear of it. Jesus knew that his ‘Light’ would dawn upon different people at different times, because discovering who Jesus truly is, is a personal experience for every individual. 
 
Hence, it was essential to keep his true identity under wraps to ensure no confusion or compulsion, no diversion of focus, and no dilution of his Father’s timing and purpose. In His time, when he fulfilled his mission, the truth would finally be revealed to one and all. (See Ecclesiastes 3:1) He also gave us lessons in humility and taught us what it means to be truly famous. Through his life and teachings, he always encouraged us to acquire the infinite power of the Holy Spirit that would shine within and through us instead of the fleeting outward fame and name. Eventually, at the end of his divine mission, he triumphantly ascended back to be crowned with glory and honor in Heaven which is the everlasting hall of fame. 
 
So then, let’s strive to get famous, Jesus style.

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.” 
As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him. 
 
Reflection 
Socrates was an ancient Greek philosopher renowned for his great wisdom. One day, he encountered a young man named Xenophon on a narrow path. Blocking the path with his stick, Socrates asked the man where he might find some food. He immediately got several responses. Then Socrates asked, “And where do people become good and honorable?” With Xenophon looking perplexed, the philosopher told him: “Come follow me, and learn.” If you ever wondered why the apostles left everything they had to follow Jesus, you might find one reason in this little story. 
 
All of us are looking for answers to life’s difficult questions. When we come across someone who might have them, we follow him (or study his books) to discover what he knows. This is why gurus are so popular. All of us are also looking for the meaning of life. Surely there has to be some purpose to it, beyond the monotony of day-to-day existence. How do we find this? This accounts for the popularity of philosophers. However, no matter how profound their ideas are or how deep their insights, there always seems to be something missing in what they teach. 
 
So, we continue looking, continue searching. But our quest ends once we find the author of life. After all, who knows the answers to life’s questions better than him? However, another question then arises. How do we know who the author of life is? There are, after all, many “authors.” Jesus simplifies it for us. He says, “Come and see” (John 1:39). He’s not telling us to believe in him blindly. He is inviting us to discover him. He knows that we are often doubtful, cynical people, but he also knows that we will believe when we see the evidence. 
 
John the Baptist once sent his disciples to Jesus to ask, “Are you the one?” Jesus had just then healed many people who were sick and delivered many who were possessed. He told them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have good news brought to them” (see Luke 7:18-23). Eleven of the twelve apostles whom Jesus invited to follow him discovered the truth of who he was because they accepted his invitation to follow him. 
 
He’s inviting us to follow him today. What do you want to do?

January 11, 2021 - Following Jesus - A Reflection on Mark 1:14-20

Scripture Reading: Mark 1:7-11 
He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.” 
 
Reflection 
When we read today’s passage about the baptism of Jesus, a question immediately comes to mind. Why was Jesus baptized in the waters of the Jordan? Was it a purely a symbolic gesture? Was it because he needed sanctification? We have an answer from Maximus of Turin: “Christ is baptized, not that he may be sanctified in the waters, but that he may sanctify the waters, and by his own purification may purify those streams which he touches.” In a way, he consecrated baptism. Hence we can now follow him in confidence into the waters of our own baptism. 
 
There’s another reason. The mission of Jesus was to save the lost; to save sinners. So, by being baptized, he showed his solidarity with sinful man. And having done that, he would go on to die as a sinner even though he, himself, would be without sin. A third reason has to do with the release of the Holy Spirit. In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit was given to chosen people, for a selected time, for a specific purpose. But Jesus’ Baptism released God’s Spirit in a new way. Now the Holy Spirit would be available to all who believed. 
 
Jesus showed us that in our baptism, we receive the Holy Spirit, the same Spirit that came to rest upon him. The Holy Spirit would enable us to lead the lives of holiness that all of us are called to lead. When Jesus walked upon this earth he walked as man, a human like us. He was, as Scripture attests, tempted in every way as we are (see Hebrews 4:25). Yet, he did not sin. With the power of the Holy Spirit we, too, can walk upon this earth as he did, living a life of purity and power. 
 
And, finally, through his baptism Jesus was letting us know of the hope the Father has in all of us. God created us in his image and likeness to be holy, pure, and perfect like he is. At the end of life’s journey, let us be able to say as Paul said, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness” (2 Timothy 4:7-8). And as we approach the throne room of heaven, may God say to each and every one of us: “You are my beloved, with you I am well pleased.”

Scripture Reading: John 3:22-30 
After this Jesus and his disciples went into the land of Judea; there he remained with them and baptized. John also was baptizing at Ae′non near Salim, because there was much water there; and people came and were baptized. For John had not yet been put in prison. Now a discussion arose between John’s disciples and a Jew over purifying. And they came to John, and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you bore witness, here he is, baptizing, and all are going to him.” John answered, “No one can receive anything except what is given him from heaven. You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him. He who has the bride is the bridegroom; the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice; therefore, this joy of mine is now full. He must increase, but I must decrease 
 
Reflection: 
John had a clear understanding of who he was and what his purpose was. His goal was to make straight the way of the Lord. It did not mean that he was just going to make Jesus known to people; it also meant drawing them to repentance so they could be filled with the righteousness of Christ. After Jesus appeared, he began baptizing people. John's disciples, undoubtedly resentful of the fact, told John about what Jesus was doing. However, in humility, he replied that his joy was now complete. "Now he must increase, but I must decrease," he said. 
 
Here we are today, reflecting on the word of God. If Jesus were to ask us what the intention of these reflections was, what would we say? We read the gospel of the day — which is the good news about Jesus Christ — and reflect upon repentance, forgiveness, love, faith, charity, and other things of God. Wouldn't you agree that these reflections intend for our old self to decrease and for Jesus in a new self to increase? 
 
Scripture says, "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, the old has passed away, and the new has come" (2 Corinthians 5:17). Our lives need to reflect what we learn from these daily Gospel readings. We should be filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ (see Philippians 1:11.), and we will be recognized by our fruit (see Matthew 7:20) So, are we willing to decrease so that Jesus may increase in us? 
 
For that, we need to die to ourselves. Not just once but daily. We know that our old sinful self is crucified with Jesus, and we are no longer enslaved to sin (see Romans 6:6). Paul says, "I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me (Galatians 2:20). Christ died for a reason. It was for us. Let his sacrifice not be in vain. 
 
Let him increase and let us decrease.

January 9, 2021 - Decrease to Increase - A Reflection on John 3:22-30

Scripture Reading: Luke 5:12-16 
Once, when he was in one of the cities, there was a man covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he bowed with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you choose, you can make me clean.” Then Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him, and said, “I do choose. Be made clean.” Immediately the leprosy left him. And he ordered him to tell no one. “Go,” he said, “and show yourself to the priest, and, as Moses commanded, make an offering for your cleansing, for a testimony to them.” But now more than ever the word about Jesus spread abroad; many crowds would gather to hear him and to be cured of their diseases. But he would withdraw to deserted places and pray. 
 
Reflection 
In Jesus’ time, leprosy was a loathsome disease. Incurable, leprosy consumed the person who suffered from it — quite literally — leading to a terrible, lonely death. In its early stages, leprosy could be concealed, but as it spread, there was no hiding the sores that sprang up or the smelly pus that oozed out of them, and soon the person was an outcast, repulsive to all. The man in today’s story was covered with leprosy. He knew there was no hope for him, except through one man — a miracle worker named Jesus. 
 
Leprosy has since been eradicated, but there is one thing with all the qualities of leprosy today. This is sin. It is loathsome. It is incurable. It is consuming. It leads to certain death. And, horror of horrors, we all suffer from it. There is not a single person among us who is not leprous with sin. We are all doomed, except for the hope that comes through one person — a savior named Jesus. And though the wages of sin is death, the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus, our Lord (see Romans 6:23). 
 
But we need to go to him, and we can’t do that unless we accept our sinfulness. Unfortunately, many of us don’t, claiming we don’t sin. But, as Scripture says, “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us” (1 John 1:9). Let us take a moment to examine our hearts now. Is it filled with hatred; jealousy; anger; vindictiveness; greed; lust; pride; unforgiveness; self-righteousness? These are all the stinking sores of leprous sin. How can we deny them? They are visible for all to see. But there is hope. If we go to Jesus and “confess our sins, he is faithful and just; he will forgive our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). 
 
Friends, Jesus is merciful and kind, compassionate and loving. I know we sometimes fear going to God, believing he will condemn us because we find condemnation all around us, but there is no condemnation in Christ Jesus (see Romans 8:1). He will cleanse us in his blood, and though our sins are like scarlet, we shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, we shall be like wool (Isaiah 1:18). And if you don’t believe me, ask the leper. He said, Lord, if you choose, you can make me clean. And Jesus stretching out his hand, touched him, and said, “I do choose. Be made clean.” And immediately, the leprosy left him. 
 
Let us go to Jesus and be made clean.

January 8, 2021 - Let’s Get Clean - A Reflection on Luke 5:12-16

Scripture Reading: Luke 4:14-22 
Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?” 
 
Reflection: 
Did you notice that the gospel passage that we just read is so similar to the passage that Jesus read more than two thousand years ago? Luke begins this passage by writing “Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit…”. And the Scripture that Jesus reads begins with “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me”. They’re both talking about a person powerfully anointed by the Spirit of God. And the rest of what Luke writes continues to ‘mirror’ what Jesus reads that day in the synagogue. In the verses that Jesus read, the prophet Isaiah wrote about bringing “good news to the poor”, and in the verses that we just read, Luke writes that a “report" — in other words, “news”! — about Jesus had begun to spread. Do you see the parallel? 
 
One of the reasons that Luke was doing this was to point out that part of the scripture that Jesus was about to read was already taking place – that a part of the prophesy had already been fulfilled! And, when we know that half of a prophesy has already come true, we’re more likely to believe in the other half, aren't we? Imagine a fortune teller tells you you’re going to find some money in the afternoon and meet the love of your life in the night. If you do find some cash lying on the street that day, isn’t the rest of your day going to be spent in expectation that you're gonna meet the love of your life that night? And you’re probably going to dress accordingly too! 
 
So why was the second half of this prophesy so important that we needed to believe that the first half of it had already been fulfilled? Jesus said, “Today, this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing”, and he’s talking about the second part – the part about proclaiming release to the captives, recovery of sight to the blind and freedom to the oppressed.This part of the scripture was being fulfilled not only by Jesus, who had just “proclaimed” these things, but also by the people present, to whom these things were being proclaimed: his Jewish listeners. 
 
Of course, the people listening in the synagogue that day didn’t recognise Jesus — or themselves — in the prophesy. All they could see in front of them was a carpenter's son. If they had looked beyond that and recognised HIM, they might have recognised that THEY were the ones being referred to as “poor”, “blind”, oppressed” and “captives”! Luke didn't want US to make the same mistake they did. We are meant to pay careful attention not only to the fact that Jesus was the appointed one with a mission, but also that WE were the mission. If it hadn't been for Jesus’s sacrifice, we too would’ve been blind, oppressed, captive, or all of these –– blind to the truth, oppressed by the evil one, and captive to sin. And so, to NOT look for ourselves in the scriptures would be a terrible, terrible mistake – like listening to only half a prophesy.

But when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out; for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.” Then he got into the boat with them and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded, for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.” 
 
Reflection: 
Today’s gospel passage is a perfect image of how we end up putting a lot of effort to move forward in our lives while facing times of great difficulties and challenges. Jesus asked the disciples to get into the boat and go to Bethsaida on the other side while He went up the mountain alone to pray. Many times in our lives we may be asked by someone, or even by God for that matter, to go somewhere and do something. We may be least prepared for it or even unwilling to go and do what is expected of us. For these disciples as well, this boat ride was totally unexpected and unplanned. 
 
Each time we face difficulties, like the disciples struggled to sail against the wind, it is mainly because it seems as though Jesus is absent from our lives, just like how He was not present in the boat with the disciples. However, Jesus assures us, like He did the disciples, that He is not someone who gives us advise from the outside, without a hint of the trouble we are going through. Rather, He personally enters into our weak moments and strengthens us with His presence and the authority of His word. Even though Jesus was on the land, away from the disciples, He saw they were struggling and came towards them, instead of ordering them to somehow make it to the shore. 
 
It is no secret that so many of us experience the strong winds of insecurity in our jobs, bitterness and brokenness in our relationships, uncertainty in life due to sudden mishaps, accidents, failures and even sudden death of a dear one. These and so many other tough situations damage our lives to the extent that many of us have to start everything all over again. These strong winds terrify us to the extent that we don’t recognise the Lord, just as the disciples were terrified and thought it was a ghost, when it was Jesus Himself coming towards them walking on the water. 
 
To those of us who are right now filled with doubt, hopelessness and fear, Jesus is reassuring us as He did to his terrified disciples, saying “Take heart, it is I. Do not be afraid”. The wind may be strong, but Jesus is the master of the wind. The darkness of the night may be terrifying, but Jesus comes to us with the light of day. And so, just like the disciples let Jesus into their boats, let us bring Him into our lives, especially when the going gets tough. Let us believe that when Jesus is with us, God with us, and when God is with us, who can be against us.

Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death

Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people. So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought to him all the sick, those who were afflicted with various diseases and pains, demoniacs, epileptics, and paralytics, and he cured them. And great crowds followed him from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and from beyond the Jordan. 
 
Reflection 
In today’s passage, we find Jesus calling people to repentance. He wasn’t the first person to invite people to repent. Every prophet of note in the Old Testament called people to repentance, which typically involved two things. One: a turning away from sin to righteousness. Two: a renewed obedience to God’s will. Sackcloth and ashes were the recommended prescription as signs of repentance. In the New Testament, John the Baptist introduced a new note. “Repent,” he said, “for the kingdom of heaven has come near” (Matthew 3:2). 
 
After John’s arrest, Jesus echoed the same message, as we heard today. However, although his message was the same, the context was now different because the “kingdom of heaven” was contained in Jesus himself. And the signs were there to indicate this. He went about curing people “who were afflicted with various diseases and pains, demoniacs, epileptics, and paralytics,” showing them that the days of living in darkness were over. The light was here, just as the prophets of old had prophesied. As Jesus declared, “I have come as light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in the darkness” (John 12:46). 
 
Earlier, Jesus said that those who walk in the darkness do not know where they go (see John 12:35), which is so true, isn’t it? Most of us don’t know where we are going anymore, stumbling blindly as we journey through life. But this need not be so. As Peter says, we “are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that (we) may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called (us) out of darkness into his marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9). And as God’s people, we need to live like people of God. We need to abstain from the desire of the flesh that wage war against the soul. 
 
As we all know, this isn’t easy. As Paul said (I paraphrase), “I do not understand what I do. For I do not do what I want to do, but I do what I hate” (Romans 7:15). Then he cries out, almost in desperation. “What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?” (Romans 7:24). It is a cry we all echo, but fortunately, there is an answer to the question which Paul himself gives. “Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Romans 7:25). 
 
This is what Jesus has come to deliver us from — not only the penalty of sin but the power of sin. All we need to do is stay yoked to Jesus (see Matthew 11:28-30) and allow ourselves to be led by the Holy Spirit (see Galatians 5:16). May God give us the grace to do both.

2 January, 2021 – Am I worthy - A Reflection on John 1:19-28 
 
This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, “I am not the Messiah.” And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” He answered, “No.” Then they said to him, “Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord’ as the prophet Isaiah said. 
Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. They asked him, “Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?” John answered them, “I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal.” This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing. 
A few weeks back, Brother Aneel invited me to be part of this show: Daily Reflections with Aneel Aranha and Friends. My first reaction was, "No!! I can’t!" I am guessing it might have been your reaction too. The question is, “Why?” His invitation wasn’t randomly given. It came because I had been writing reflections on the readings for a few weeks, and he obviously found that I had something good to offer. The invitation also came with clear instructions on how to go about doing this. It also promised assistance should it be needed. So, why did I find the invitation so intimidating, and why was my immediate reaction to refuse it? 
 
I found my answer in today’s reading. The Jewish elders are curious about John the Baptist who was baptizing people in the wilderness. After he denied he was the Messiah , Elijah or the Prophet, they asked him why he was baptizing if he wasn’t any of these people. He replied, “I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal.” I realized that the main reason I was reluctant was because I didn’t believe that I was worthy enough to break the word of God. 
 
But then I remembered something that Brother Aneel had said in one of his talks. "Nothing I will ever do will make me worthy to preach the word of God,” he had said. "The only thing that makes me worthy to preach is the righteousness of Christ.” And I thought, I share the righteousness of Christ too. But then there were other questions that arose: Will I speak well? Am I presentable enough? Do I have the necessary charisma? Will people appreciate what I have to say? What if they question my qualifications? Do YOU have those concerns? 
 
And then I thought of John the Baptist. He wore a garment of camel’s hair and a leather girdle around his waist (Matthew 3:4). Did he care what he looked like? Did he care what people thought about him? Did he care about the questions people asked him? He felt called to do something and he went ahead and just did it. And God used him. So, let us not hesitate to share the word of God by making excuses. If we feel moved to, let us open our mouths and say what God wants us to say. And I believe that God will do what he wants to do through us. 
 
Let us be many voices crying out in the wilderness. Make straight the way of the Lord.

January 2, 2021 - Am I Worthy? - A Reflection on  John 1:19-28

Scripture Reading: Mark 6:34-44 
As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. When it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now very late; send them away so that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy something for themselves to eat.” But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” They said to him, “Are we to go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread, and give it to them to eat?” And he said to them, “How many loaves have you? Go and see.” When they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.” Then he ordered them to get all the people to sit down in groups on the green grass. So they sat down in groups of hundreds and of fifties. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and he divided the two fish among them all. And all ate and were filled; and they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. Those who had eaten the loaves numbered five thousand men. 
 
Reflection 
We feel overwhelmed at times when faced with an obstacle or a task that appears insurmountable. It seems way beyond our scope and in such a situation, without even giving it a shot, we attempt to palm it off to someone else and/or just give up stating it’s not our cup of tea. In today’s gospel passage, with every passing hour the disciples seemed to get increasingly agitated seeing the large crowd, wondering when Jesus would end his teaching so they could send them away. Perhaps they were looking at enjoying some peaceful time alone with Jesus and having a meal together. After all they had just returned from their mission and were waiting to share their experiences with him. 
However, Jesus had other plans. He himself was tired and hungry and was also upset about John the Baptist’s death; nevertheless there was an important lesson to impart first. He knew his disciples were trying to escape the problem (that is of feeding the multitude) instead of at least trying to solve it. He wanted to train them to develop a solution centric approach, so he guided them along by giving them a few steps: 
[1] Be accountable and face the problem (“You give them something to eat”) 
[2] Work as a team and examine possible solutions (“How many loaves have you? Go and see”) 
[3] Break the problem down into smaller tasks (get all the people to sit down in groups) 
[4] Pray before taking any action (Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to Heaven) 
[5] Initiate the action (He gave them to his disciples to set before the people) 
[6] Review the outcome (They took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish) 
 
In many life situations, our understanding may fall short because of our limited vision. That’s why we need to trust and depend on the Lord. (See Proverbs 3:5) We shouldn’t give up because through Him and His strength we can assuredly do all things (See Philippians 4:13) 
 
There was another crucial lesson Jesus taught us that day - of putting others’ needs before our own. It wasn’t enough to just nourish the people spiritually through his teachings; at that point it was important to fulfill their physical needs too. God is love and his love teaches us to go out of our way when required to meet the needs of our fellow human beings. ‘Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action’ (That’s 1 John 3:18) 
 
So, let’s seek to be problem solvers in life believing that we are never alone. And whatever we do, let’s do it with love. God bless you!

So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. 
After eight days had passed, it was time to circumcise the child; and he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. 
 
Reflection 
Let me begin by wishing all of you a very blessed new year. It always feels special, doesn’t it, the sense of refreshing and optimism that a new year brings? The feeling that we can put everything — all our mistakes and foolishness — behind us and look forward to a fresh start. The cynic might say: “What’s the point? We’re gonna make the same mistakes again; we’ll do the same foolish things again!” But let them say whatever they want; I believe that a new year always has new things in store, and I wish them for all of us. 
 
And among the things I wish for is to be less reactive and more reflective. Have you realized that we tend to be a reactive people? When tragedies strike, when circumstances become difficult, when conversations become heated, even when miracles happen, we react rather than reflect There is usually very little to be gained by this; on the contrary reacting often makes a bad situation worse. Being reflective, instead, gives us a chance to examine what has happened and see if there is something to be learned from the situation; something to be gained; something that will help us grow. 
 
We learn how to do this from Mary, the mother of Jesus. When Jesus was born, a group of shepherds were visited by an angel. He said, “I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord.” (Luke 2:10-11). And, then, suddenly there was a multitude of angels who joined him in singing a hymn of worship. The shepherds then went to see this child and when they met Mary they told her what had happened. Scripture says, “Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart.” 
 
This is not the only time Mary has been described as treasuring things in her heart. Twelve years later, when the boy Jesus was lost and found in the temple, Scripture again says that “his mother treasured all these things in her heart” (see Luke 2:51). Let us make this one of the resolutions for the year: that we be a people who treasure and ponder things in our hearts. This will make us a wiser, gentler, and kinder people. Consequently, we will make this world a better place for all of us to live in. 
 
Once again, wish you a very blessed year! 
 
A few notes in closing: 
 
Today makes 17 years since we started the HSI ministry. We have reached millions of people all over the world since then through the various things that we do. I thank and praise God for that, and all the people who helped to make this happen. 
 
Today also marks the start of the fourth consecutive year these Daily Reflections have been going out. I have not missed a single day for the past three years, and that fact kinda makes me happy. Again, this would not have been possible without God. 
 
Finally, today also begins my new life as a hermit. There are several reasons why I have made this decision, but the main one is simply this desire to be with God. I will continue to do these reflections, and whatever else I can do from within the confines of my home, but I will not be leaving it again unless I absolutely have to. 
 
I will also have no social interaction with anyone other than my immediate family and those who work with me. I don’t know how long this will be for — I’m getting into this believing it will be forever — but I will let God decide that.

January 1, 2021 - Reflective People - A Reflection on Luke 2:16-21

It’s the last day of the year, possibly one full of mistakes. It’s a good opportunity to forget what is behind and look forward to what is ahead. #Reflectonthis #DailyReflection https://youtu.be/zBFs8KG5rlA 
 
Scripture Reading 
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. 
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. 
He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. 
And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. (John testified to him and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’ ”) From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known. 
 
Reflection 
Today is the last day of a year that has been very different from any other year before it. Covid-19 forced us to confront our mortality, even as it shook many of the things we put our faith in to their very foundations. But most of us have survived. And, having learned our lessons — hopefully — we enter a new year a little older and a little wiser. So, what's a good message to close the year with? How about these words that we heard John saying today: "To all who received Jesus, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God" (John 1:12). 
 
If we are baptized in Christ, we become children of God. But although we often profess this, we are inclined to believe this is just a figure of speech. We can't really be God's children, can we? Not in the sense that Jesus is God's child? But this is precisely what we are: children of God. In confirmation, Paul said, "The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs —heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ" (Romans 8:16). We are heirs of God! To be an heir is to be an inheritor. What belongs to a father belongs to his children. Consequently, what belongs to God the Father, belongs to us! 
 
To clear any doubt about the scope of inheritance, Paul says that we are co-heirs with Christ. What is Jesus' is also ours! Yet how many of us believe this? We often walk in the world like paupers, approaching our Father with a begging bowl in hand. We ask him to bless us when he already has blessed us with everything we need – and beyond measure! This is what John is talking about when he says (I paraphrase), "We have all received, grace upon grace, from the fullness of God!" It is a tragedy that we don't know what we have received because we don't know who we are. We are all born again, made new in Christ, whole and holy in him. 
 
In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul wrote: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" (2 Corinthians 5:17). Let us put on the new garments of sonship if we haven't already. And if we have been wearing them but forgotten who we are on occasion, let us put the mistakes behind us. When Paul failed, he declared: "Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:13-14). Let us put the past behind us and move forward. Let us move heavenward!

Scripture Reading

Scripture Reading 
There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. 
When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him. 
 
Reflection: Luke 2:36-40 
Over the past couple of days, we have reflected upon Jesus taken to the temple for consecration. One of the people who came to visit him was Simeon, whom Scripture describes as “righteous and devout,” with “the Holy Spirit on him” (see Luke 2:25). Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts when Jesus was brought in and took the child in his arms. “My eyes have seen your salvation,” he said, in recognition of who Jesus was — the savior of the world! Amazing, yes? 
 
No sooner did he leave, another person came in. She was Anna, an 84-year-old widow. She was a prophetess who practically lived in the temple, worshipping God day and night. She began to praise God as she beheld the child, telling everyone that he was the redemption of Jerusalem. She, too, recognized who Jesus was. Again, amazing, yes? Now here’s a question that will really amaze you. Where were the religious leaders — the high priest and his priests, the Sanhedrin, the Pharisees, and the scribes? Why were they not there to receive the long-awaited Messiah? 
 
The simple answer is that they didn’t know that the Messiah was in their midst? Which leads to another question? How could they not know? If Simeon and Anna could know, how couldn’t they? The answer to this lies in the descriptions of Simeon and Anna that we just read. They were both godly people who worshipped God in Spirit and in truth — although they may not have described the way they worshiped in these words. They had a connection with God based on a real relationship with him, not just a theoretical knowledge that came from studying about him. 
 
This is a very real danger that we face even today. Learning about God through seminars, retreats, theological study, courses, and religious programs is not a bad thing. However, it becomes an excellent thing to use them to develop a relationship with God or enhance an existing relationship with him. Without this, all the “education” we get is only “knowledge.” This only serves to make us believe we know something when in truth, we don’t. See, knowing ABOUT a person is not the same thing as KNOWING the person. 
 
We need to know Christ. So let us ask the Holy Spirit to reveal him to us. Just like he did with Simeon and Anna.

Scripture Reading: Luke 2:22-35 
Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, “Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.” 
And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, “This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.” 
 
Reflection 
We get a glimpse of three Jewish ceremonies from today’s passage. The first is circumcision, performed on the eighth day for male children. The second is purification from childbirth, which took place 40 days after a child’s birth. This, of course, was for Mary. And the third is the consecration of the firstborn, recognizing that the firstborn son belonged to the Lord. When the time came for the purification, Mary and Joseph took Jesus to the temple, where they met Simeon, a man filled by the Holy Spirit. 
 
He blessed them, then said to Mary, “This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.” What did the prophecy mean? There are four elements to it. One: he said Jesus was destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel. How people responded to Jesus would determine their destiny. As Mark wrote: “The one who believes and is baptized will be saved, but the one who does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:16). 
 
Two, Simeon said that Jesus would be a sign that would be spoken against. Jesus is God’s sign to his people, but instead of accepting him, people would speak against him. There are several instances when Scripture describes this happening. The gospel writer John wrote: “Many of them said, “He is demon-possessed and raving mad. Why listen to him?” (John 10:20). However, he adds, “But others said, “These are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?” (John 10:21). 
 
Three, Simeon said this would reveal the thoughts of many hearts. How we speak about Jesus reveals the truth of our hearts and whether we live in the light or the darkness. John said, “This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed” (John 3:19-20). If our hearts are evil, our words will be evil too, ya? 
 
And then, finally, Simeon said that a sword would pierce Mary’s soul. The Holy Spirit has shown Simeon the deep anguish that Mary would feel as her son is rejected. He was rejected first by the rulers — King Herod had all baby boys in the country murdered to kill Jesus. He was rejected then by the nation’s religious leaders — the scribes and the Pharisees did not recognize who Jesus was. Finally, he was rejected by the mob, who goaded by the Pharisees, howled for his death. And then, Mary would watch her son crucified by the people he came to save. 
 
Pierced by the sword. That describes Mary’s soul very well.
