In the last of His so-called "Paraclete Passages", Jesus continues to reveal the approaching work of the Holy Spirit. Having established the Helper's convicting work in the darkened world, His attention turns to His work in the hearts and minds of believers. The nature of this activity will be revelation, and the focus will once again be Jesus. For the Spirit of Truth will continue to unveil the truths concerning the person and purpose of Christ, well after He has returned to His Father. Ultimately we will trace God's graduated self-revelation through Redemptive History and realize that the most perfect, complete, and resplendent revelation of God is to be found in His Son Jesus, the Christ.

Jesus continues to prepare His disciples for His departure by revealing to them how the world will treat them once He is gone-- they will hate them just as they have hated Him.  He explains how extensive this hatred will be-- born of ignorance and grounded in their hatred of God Himself.  But He will also make it clear that the world's rebelliousness is not because of the lack of revelation.  On the contrary, in both His Words and His Works, Jesus has revealed the Light of God and the path to salvation.  He makes it clear that the rejection of the blessing of revelation is a serious sin, for which all who receive it are culpable.  Ultimately we will come to the realization there is supreme danger for believer and unbeliever alike when we reject or ignore the Light of God's revelation.

On the night Jesus celebrated the Passover with His disciples for the last time, He instituted what we call Communion, or "The Lord's Supper".  On the same evening, He washed His disciples feet in a gesture that has profound significance, both to Christ's model of servanthood and His redemptive mission and purpose.  In this message we will combine these two great events in a fanciful story underscoring the importance of being a redeemed believer in Christ before participating in the sacrament of Holy Communion.  The purpose of the story is to help recapture the lost reverence for The Lord's Supper as a means of grace, in order to bolster the faith of believers and facilitate our walk with Christ.  Jesus calls us to His table for a special time of Communion with Him but requires first that He symbolically and redemptively "washes our feet".  For after all-- this is the Footwasher's Feast!

Most of us do not want to be hated-- in fact we would prefer to be liked. And yet, Jesus assures His disciples (and through them us!) that if they are "abiding in Him", the world will hate them as it did Him.  And what naturally follows hatred is oppression and persecution.  As Christians, we are faced with the dilemma of what to do in the face of such hatred.  Do we hide from it?  Do we compromise our beliefs so not to offend anyone?  Do we collude with the world we have been chosen out of?  Or do we boldly accept it and set about the work of the Kingdom regardless?  In our passage for this study, Jesus expresses the reality of this hatred, explains why it must exist, and subtly shows His disciples that it is ONLY by facing the hatred of the world that we will truly be effective witnesses for Him.

As Jesus continues to instruct His disciples during the Upper Room Discourse, He expands upon the allegory of the Vine and the branches.  His focus turns to the relationship between Himself and His disciples.  He emphasizes that He is the Vine and they are the branches and without Him they have neither fruit nor life; that any branch that is not abiding in the Vine is useless and no different than a fruitless branch that is cut off and cast away. In this relationship we will find that Christianity is wholly systemic, flowing from Christ to us and cannot be absorbed or created through external means.  After wrestling with the complex way Jesus addresses both salvation and sanctification, we will analyze how the church of today is miserably failing to recognize and implement these fundamental principles of systemic Christianity.
