They begged him because demons had become the norm 
READ v 28-29 
Demon possession is real - Job 2:2the Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?” Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.” 
in this town- its clear that the people had gotten used to the demons and just avoided them 
It says “exceedingly fierce, so that no one could pass that way.” 
To me- that says- you know, we know that there is a place in the city that is overcome with demons- but we’re not going to go there and do some spiritual warfare and fix it- we’re just going to go around it. 
Eph 4:27 nor give place to the devil.- and these people had given place to the devil. 
Forwhatever reason- they thought it better to just avoid the problem instead of facing the problem 
To them- just let the demons demon- let them have their way- we’ll just learn to live with them 
visit this old lady when I was kid- house had cockroaches- she’d name them- better to clean? 
So in part- when these people come to Jesus at the edge of the city and beg him to leave- its because Jesus had upset their norm. what they were used to- how they did business 
Its like when an addict gets clean and goes back to the house- they house knew how to deal with addiction- don’t know how to deal with healthy- it can create problems. 
So they beg him- Just leave Jesus- we didn’t want you to deal with this possession- we didn’t ask you to fix our issues- just leave- we liked our pet demons- Maybe it created a distraction so they wouldn’t have to deal with their own issues- liked having issues to blame their problems on? Who knows

Faith That Wins • Hebrews 11:32-40 
purpose and audience of sermon? 4 points 
By show of hands, who knows what this this? 
That’s right, it’s a telescope. what one writer referred to as the invention that has done the most to redefine our place in the universe, and is perhaps the most important instrument of all time. 
Why? What is it about this simple tool, that holds so much power, power to change minds, change lives, to change entire societies? 
What does the telescope do for you when you look into it? 
It gives you supernatural sight. 
By peering into a telescope you are transported into another realm. A very real and grand and glorious and expansive realm, a realm that is all around you, all the time but distant and because it’s so distant, it remains unseen by natural eyes. 
For 99.9 percent of human history, most people held a natural viewpoint of the world and their rightful place: All our senses scream out to us that the Earth is the center of the universe, and we are the center of the earth and everything revolves around us. 
But once your eyes are opened by the telescope, you are immediately confronted with the majestic and terrifying truth. Infinite Grandure and beauty and strength exist and it all belongs to another, to one that is beyond you. You are but a speck of a speck of a speck revolving around an object, which is revolving around a greater object, which itself is spinning in unison with countless other such heavenly bodies, inside of a deep web of endless galaxies, all spoken into existence and held in place by the Creator. 
It’s no wonder the telescope changed everything. It changed the way humans viewed not only the sun and moon and stars, but it changed the way men viewed themselves, their lives and their place and purpose on this planet. 
Now, who knows that this sermon isn’t about telescopes? 
Listen to the word of God and see if you can figure out the metaphor.

Hold Fast - Hebrews 10:19-25 - Pastor Jay Alexander

Are You Willing to Pay the Price Hebrew 10:1-18 
 
You can't have your cake and eat it (too) The proverb literally means "you cannot simultaneously retain your cake and eat it". 
 
Once the cake is eaten, it is gone 
 
The proverb's meaning is similar to the phrases "you can't have it both ways" and "you can't have the best of both worlds." 
 
There is always a price to everything, it doesn’t matter what it is. And when I talk about the Price, I am not only talking about money, I am referring to that thing that you have to give up in order to get something else- Those things that really matter to you 
 
When you say yes to one thing, you are saying no to another. 
 
Tonight – you are here 
The alarm tomorrow morning 
When you starting dating / Getting Married/ Having children the list goes on and on 
Our text tonight talks exactly about this concept 
 
Hebrews 10:5-7(NLT) That is why, when Christ[a] came into the world, he said to God, “You did not want animal sacrifices or sin offerings. But you have given me a body to offer. You were not pleased with burnt offerings or other offerings for sin. Then I said, ‘Look, I have come to do your will, O God (as is written about me in the Scriptures) 
 
Jesus knew what was happening to the animals – How the animal sacrifice worked (Literally) The killing, the blood poured out, the attorning of sins 
He knew as this text tells us; He knew that His Body was given to Him as an offering 
He was going to pay the price for our sins and He agreed 
 
We read the Luke 22:41-42 (AMPC) - And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup [of divine wrath] from Me; yet not My will, but [always] Yours be done.” 
We assume that reality hit for Him then, No sir- He knew what awaited Him- Yet He was willing to pay the price 
 
Hebrews 10:8-9(NLT) First, Christ said, “You did not want animal sacrifices or sin offerings or burnt offerings or other offerings for sin, nor were you pleased with them” (though they are required by the law of Moses). 9 Then he said, “Look, I have come to do your will.” He cancels the first covenant in order to put the second into effect. 
 
The tainted offering, whether is was the animals blood or the human sins- was not pleasing to God 
Yet in our culture today, we feel like it’s possible to literally have our cake and order Uber eat and continue to have one more 
 
This has spilled over to the Christian walk; we want to be part of the Jesus culture and not pay the price that it takes to be a member 
 
This Christianity is a costly journey and for a minute in our time, the price was low (Show up to Church e.t.c) but moving forward much MORE is required 
 
I was talking to one of my brother in Christ and he said “I am changing how I invite people to Church, before I just wanted to get them in the house of God and then they would hear the Word and be converted but what COVID-19 has taught me that some of these people never got saved, they came here and made it about friendship, leadership and never really got a heart change. 
 
They played to part, and looked the part but not willing to pay the price by giving up the old life 
~ He cancels the first covenant in order to put the second into effect. 10 For God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time 
 
These paid a small price and ripped no benefits when those things they held on to were taken away 
He continues to remind me that in the story of the young ruler, 
 
Mark 10:17-27 (NLT) - 17 As Jesus was starting out on his way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down, and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked. “Only God is truly good. 19 But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. You must not cheat anyone. Honor your father and mother.’[a]”“Teacher,” the man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young. ”Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” At this the man’s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

Y’all Need Jesus (Hebrews 7:26-28) *All verses in NKJV* 
- In Hebrews Chapter 7, the author is building the case for why Jesus is the ultimate high priest and spiritual leader, by comparing Him to the examples of priesthood that they understood already. 
- They are all familiar with the Law of Moses and the Levitical Priesthood. They know about Father Abraham, of whom they are all his children. These are the most honored and revered men in history. 
- There is a priest even greater than the priests and leaders they already know and give great honor. 
- He tells them of Melchizedek, the “king of justice” and “king of peace”, and high priest of God Most High. There is no record of the beginning or end of his life, so his priesthood remains forever. 
- Abraham paid a tithe to him, and received a blessing from him. The one who has the power to bless is greater than the one being blessed. 
- The Jews paid tithes to the Levites, but the Levites paid tithes to someone with even more spiritual authority, Melchizedek, by proxy through Father Abraham, who pre-dates the law. 
- Now Jesus is described as being a high priest in the order of Melchizedek. The illustration meaning to show that Jesus too, is greater than all others that came before him. He is worthy of all honor. 
- Jesus is the King of justice and peace, no beginning and no end, and because Jesus lives forever, his priesthood remains forever. 
- Hebrews 6:19-20, This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, 20 where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. 
- Jesus is greater than the Levite Priesthood. Even though they were chosen by God, they couldn’t really fulfill the requirements of the sacrificial systems because they were only human. 
- Humans are inherently sinful and flawed. The high priest needed to offer a sacrifice for himself as well as for the people. It was never enough to truly pay the price for sin. 
Hebrews 7:26-28, For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless (innocent), undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; 27 who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself. 28 For the law appoints as high priests, men who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints the Son who has been perfected forever.

Was supposed to do a wedding in Texas in March- I cancelled- didn’t want to get sick or stuck 
Ive seen a lot of people take a lot of precautions with covid over this past year. Distancing. Covering. Washing. Planning. Changing their plans. Doing everything they can to make sure they they don’t get infected and they don’t die. Wearing masks in cars. Not shopping, travel work etc 
Public service announcements, tv, web, radio, announcements in parking lots. EVERYWHERE 
Anything and everything at whatever cost necessary to live and not die. Road signs- maskup! 
I wonder if we took that drastic of measure to stay away from sin. Just as much protection 
In these verses Jesus uses the example of lust to expose a heart condition and then uses hyperbole to describe the drastic measures we should take to keep ourselves from sin 
The stakes couldn’t be higher. Hell is the destination for those who don’t take it seriously. 
 
Jesus says sin Starts with Intent 
Intent is shown in our first verse 27 “You have heard that it was said [i]to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 
 
To Jesus this sin of lust starts with intent “to lust for her” it’s a plan to sin. Not just lust all sin 
James 1:15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. DESIRE+ACTION = Sin = Death 
 
The desire to lust is a desire to sin and is equal with actually committing the sin of adultery 
Jesus is drawing attention to the fact that adultery is listed as the 7th commandment “thou shalt not commit adultery” which the jews were apparently using as an excuse to justify lust 
The whole “I didn’t do it, just thought about it” defense, that in their minds they thought OK 
It’s the moral equivalent of my brother not touching me in the back of the car as a kid 
Without spending a ton of time going into every scenario lets make it simple- Sex is only for married people who are man and a woman and intimate thoughts are to be reserved for them 
Pictures, moving or stationary. Random people etc. the sin of the eyes and the lust of the flesh 
ANYTHING outside of that is sin according to Jesus. A longing look. An extended thought. Anything. Very very high bar. Many people probably have or do struggle with this. 
Not just guys. I was in the Army with females. They are just as bad. 
 
But I don’t want to spend our time together just limiting to the sin of lust- all sin is equally as grievous. The non-lusters are not off the hook this morning. You’re just as vile. Sin is sin. 
And it all starts with intent. And intent and desire are just as bad as action. Must be rooted out 
People have too long lived in a world where they think its ok to think something they don’t act on- Murderous thoughts, lust, greed, anger, envy, covetousness, sexual deviancy etc 
God judges the intents of our hearts. He looks deep into our hearts and sees what we value 
Psalm 44:21 Would not God search this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart. 
Man. This is scary. I need more time to work on my heart. Its far from perfect. 
 
Jeremiah 17:10 10 I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings. 
 
Yikes- not just the heart- but the mind too- God looks at what I’m thinking about and what I desire and he wants it to be pure. 
 
Lord Jesus help us! Fill us with your Holy Spirit! Enable us to live for you! We need you father! 
We need the Holy spirit to help our hearts! We can’t meet this standard on our own strength! 
How do we fix the intent of our hearts? 
 
Be born again- Become a new creation in Christ- It changes- but the flesh still wars! Soooo 
Bible reading and bible preaching Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 
 
Preaching and reading is supposed to convict us. Its supposed to refine us. Its painful 
Its like cleaning- big stuff, little stuff, clean and then deep clean. Blinds, corners etc. 
Back when Gym was open- trainer would always find some weak body part to show off 
Remind ourselves of the stakes 1 Corinthians 4:5 5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the [a]counsels of the hearts. Then each one’s praise will come from God.

We are in a culture war in America that has been going on for decades but has been heating up over the past few years. We’re moving from One nation under God to one nation under Govt. 
We used to allow to each his own, but now there is a convert or be destroyed ethos 
It’s a moving target with no defined structure, leadership or clear goal but its clearly anti-God. Its propagated through the media, facebook, twitter, google, amazon, apple, governmental powers, institutions of education, books, blogs, videos and validated by multinational corporations of influence that now are an economic enforcement arm of compliance 
Its hypocritical, nonsensical, unscientific, coearcive, demanding and demonic. Its forceful. 
It’s a war that wants to control what you can say, where you can go, tells you who you are and what you can be, wants to change the way you think, and what you’re allowed to think. How to act, live, and worship. What you can and cant eat and drink. Demonizes what you hold sacred. It wants to destroy the nuclear family. It normalizes and accepts criminal behavior and enables addiction and vagrancy. It blames. It distorts. It withholds truth. It wants to control what you watch and see. It wants to fundamentally change the way you view the world and encourage you to abandon the things of God as antiquated. It redefines words. It demonizes some groups and elevates others. It identifies you by your external qualities. It restricts freedom. It’s a form of totalitarianism that seeks to control every aspect of your life. Its illogical and forces you call something that is clearly what it is, clearly what it is not. Its veiled in promises of personal pleasure and utopian ideals and progress. It changes God to a theistic pleasure giver instead of creator who must be submitted to. It has infiltrated churches to teach that God wants you to have pleasure more than truth, action as salvation with no requirement for conversion It changes scriptures, destroys orthodoxy, and wants you to reject the truth of your eyes and ears. It wants you to accept without protest falsehoods and propaganda and to just acquiesce to its demands of submission. It has been happening in plain sight for decades and as the proverbial frog in the boiling water can attest- many haven’t been paying attention to what has been going on. Its cultural Marxism, secular humanism, worship of the State and destruction of the Holy. It is churches that refuse to preach the Gospel of repentance and succumbs to the ideals of the world and offers a hedonistic licentious self serving Gospel that turns Jesus into a long haired genderconfused weed smoking hippie who walks around and approves of sin 
 And it is coming for and in the Church. Call me tin foil black helicopter guy but the Bible promises it. 
 
You are going to engage in battle 
You have to wake up to the reality that we are engaged in a battle- we’re not in the same world 
We are in an idealogical fight that can simply be defined as reverential and deconstructivist 
One side reveres God, his structures, institutions and freedoms and the other seeks to destroy them at any cost and elevate the desires of the individual at the cost of any institution. 
Reverentialism admits that God is great and I am not while the deconstructivist declares I am great and God is not. I am my own God. I answer to no one. I can do what I want to whom. 
This is the battle and you are either Going to be engaged or you are not. You must as they did in acts- Acts 5:41 count it worthy to suffer shame for His name. 
Mat 10:34 “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. 
Matthew 10:16( Persecutions Are Coming ] “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. 
This battle is not a physical take up arms get ready to get physical battle but a spiritual one. 
Matthew 26:52 But Jesus said to him, “Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword

Preparing for battle 
 
Text: Deut 20:2-4, Joshua 1:1-3; 5-9 
Introduction: God want us to have great courage in 2021! 
Meaning of courage: "to show oneself strong." 
The promised land 
- the life of victory, a life of living in the fruit of the spirit- the gifts of the spirit 
-a life of the promises of God and going into the new things that God has for us—

We are to confess His word. 
We are to meditate His word. 
 
How we are to be walking in courage. 
Consecrate yourself Joshua 3:5 
Consecrate: The act of setting apart; To sanctify; Dedicating for God’s use. 
1 Peter 2:9

Be holy as He is Holy – 1 Peter 1:15, Titus 2:11-12 
Romans 12:1-2 
Consecration means, "I will set aside the typical and put my spirit on ready to see where God is working around me so that I can join Him. 
 
Listen to the words of the Lord (instructions). Joshua 3:9 
John 8:47 
Prov 2:1-5 
 
Walk in obedience to all HE asks of us. Joshua 3:13,15 
Faith moves you forward in God's way, in God's timing. And there will come a moment when you must act on what God has said. If you don't, you'll never cross the Jordan. 
Not in fear or doubt. Vs. 17 
Remember and testify of what God has done. Joshua 4:5-7 
Psalm 77:11, Rev 12:11 
Conclusion: 
Tomorrow you will see GREAT and MIGHTY things!!

Text:  Deut 20:2-4, Joshua 1:1-3; 5-9
Introduction: God want us to have great courage in 2021!
Meaning of courage: "to show oneself strong."
The promised land 
- the life of victory, a life of living in the fruit of the spirit- the gifts of the spirit
-a life of the promises of God and going into the new things that God has for us—

God Fights for Us 
Deuteronomy 20:3-4 
Intro: The enemy—has not changed – As we start this new year—be aware that the enemy is there- to kill, steal and destroy- BUT CHRIST HAS ALREADY COME TO GIVE US LIFE AND LIFE MORE ABUNDANTLY!!! 
Instructions: 
I. Do not be afraid 
 FEAR NOT—365 times 
 WHY—verse 4—because God is with us- HE will never leave us nor forsake us 
 What can man do to us? 
 The fear mentioned in this verse is an absolute fear- of people / of situations/ of things/ of what people say or think/ of the future 
 Perfect love casts out ALL fear—I John 4:18 God has NOT given us a spirit of fear but of a sound mind!!II Timothy 1:7 
FEAR makes us become ‘small’—shrink back—build walls—fear of getting hurt by others we build walls around ourselves—fear of what others may say—keeps us silent 
Fear of what MAY happen- makes us refuse to go forward in life 
Fear of loss – makes us try to cling onto what we have 
The Lord says- LOOK the enemy is out there- there is no doubt about that—BUT I have conquered the enemy- IT IS FINISHED- and you have to walk in that VICTORY- you have the power and the authority- to cast out demons- to bring good news to transform lives- to see people delivered from their chains of darkness SO THERE IS NO REASON TO BE AFRAID! 
II. Do not be Fainthearted 
 A. the word for Fainthearted means weary- giving up- going soft 
 B. Our God has given us ALL we need- all the resources we need- tap into those resources—EVERY SPIRITUAL BLESSING – Ephesians 1:3 
 Have you grown weary of loss= tap into His abundance and supply 
 Have you grown weary of betrayal- tap into His acceptance and approval 
 Have you grown weary of sickness and disease- tap into His healing power 
 Have you grown weary of drama- tap into His peace 
 Have you grown weary of temptation – tap into His Victory 
 Have you grown weary of the battle – tap into His Courage and Strength 
 Have you grown weary of sadness – tap into His Joy 
 
 
III. Do not tremble or be terrified 
 A. the word TREMBLE- actually means to panic to -the actual word means to be in a hurry—when we allow the enemy to intimidate us often we make wrong decisions because we HURRY- we aren’t PATIENT— 
 B. God says “WAIT ON ME—BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD…” 
Ps. 46:10; Isaiah 41:10 
 C. panic and anxiety cause us to grow weary within. Rushing around like chickens without a head causing us to become confused….Philippians 4:6, 7 --BE ANXIOUS FOR NOTHING 
 D. HE GIVES US REST in our minds- those anxious thoughts or panicked ideas are NOT from God they are from the enemy 
 E. The word here for TERRIFIED- also means tremble but it has a deeper meaning of being oppressed—it says DO NOT be oppressed- terrified- ‘allow’ the enemy to push you down. 
 What have you allowed the enemy to ‘push you down’ with? Other people’s opinions? Your past? Your mistakes- past or present? 
 NO weapon formed against us shall prosper—the enemy loves to use our mind- remember he loves to twist God’s Word and the Truth to keep us in oppression. Whose report are we going to believe- are we going to believe the twists of the enemy or are we going to believe the straightforward Word of God? 
Conclusion: 
We walk in FAITH- in FREEDOM- feeding on the WORD OF GOD and standing on HIS Word so that we can knowingly walk in victory day in and day out- NO MATTER what we are going through or what comes against us.

Tuesday night- “Engage the Battle” week 
 
“But First, Consecration” 
 
Deuteronomy 20:2-4 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB) 
2 When you are about to engage in battle, the priest is to come forward and address the army. 3 He is to say to them: ‘Listen, Israel: Today you are about to engage in battle with your enemies. Do not be cowardly. Do not be afraid, alarmed, or terrified because of them. 4 For the Lord your God is the One who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.’ 
 
Let’s talk about this battle. If it were in the days of Braveheart, we would sharpen our bows, put on our war paint and go to fight. We would know what we were fighting for. But this is a different kind of battle and quite frankly, one that American Christians have not had to fight in a few generations. 
 
We are living in a post-Christian society. We are no longer a Christian nation. What does this mean? Our society, our morals, our laws are no longer governed and dictated by the statutes of the Word of God. They are dictated by our surrounding society and its morals, values and the world’s philosophies. God’s hand is removed off America and we are a nation under judgment- God is giving us over to our own ways and the church has been sick and lifeless to restrain what needed to be restrained. 
Keep this in mind as we talk this week about engaging the battle. What does it mean to “engage the battle”? First, to engage means that we are involved, we are participants in the battle that is raging on around us. We cannot sit by idly, we cannot hibernate into self-preservation mode. WE must engage. The Christian way of life is under attack and we will be more and more persecuted for our beliefs. If you do nothing, say nothing and do not engage; you may be fine before men. But you will not be able to stand before God AND, If you are looking for easy ministry in a post-Christian culture, you are unrealistic in your outlook. 
 
Jude 3-4 3 Dear friends, although I was eager to write you about the salvation we share, I found it necessary to write and exhort you to contend for the faith that was delivered to the saints once for all. 4 For some men, who were designated for this judgment long ago, have come in by stealth; they are ungodly, turning the grace of our God into promiscuity and denying Jesus Christ, our only Master and Lord. 
Good works are not under attack- the Word of God is under attack. THE Christian way of living is under attack. The way we gather, the things we believe and hold dear, the Word of God and the deity of Jesus. 
And so Jude tells us, “Contend for the faith!” Not “your faith or my faith”, not “my ministry” but THE faith. The words of Scripture and doctrines, tenets, ways and precepts that have been around for 2000 years—and suddenly this generation is the one that knows better and is self-aware. On the basis of the Word of God, there is such a thing as apostasy and when we see a real turning away from God, we are not faithful to the Word of God unless we call it what it is. We must call apostasy, apostasy. If we do not speak out against sin and unrighteousness, we are not ready for revival. WE are cowardly mice and God will not revive mice.
