Our Response: 
Confessing our Sins: God of glory, we confess our many sins to you this morning. Though we were created to praise our Creator, who is blessed forever, we have served and loved created things. This morning we confess our idolatry of self, our yearning to accumulate things for ourselves and for our own comfort. Of ourselves we would be hoarders of all things, unwilling to share, unwilling to give. Forgive us, for we plead for mercy through the Lord Jesus Christ. We are both overjoyed and humbled by his own willingness to give himself. Though he was rich, the Son became poor by taking on flesh and suffering. Though he had all power, he did not use his power to keep himself from suffering in our place. This cuts us to the heart as we consider our own unwillingness to give up what we have. Shamefully, we have been unwillingly to give five minutes of our time to those in need, and far less willing to submit our whole Sunday to you for rest and worship. Forgive us, in Jesus’ name. Spirit of God, transform us to be like Christ, who gave of himself so much. Turn us outward in love and thankfulness, work in us what is pleasing in your sight, for we ask in Jesus’ name, amen. Confessing our sins: 
Gracious God and Father, we humble ourselves before you and plead for forgiveness today. Isaiah tells us that sin separates us from you, and we know it all too well. Sin also separates us from the neighbors we are called to love. You care for everything and everyone you created, but we are focused only on ourselves. When we run away from you and your paths of righteousness, we go downward and inward, like Jonah asleep in the ship’s cabin. Forgive our many sins and turn our souls towards you and others. Instill compassion in us that we may be like you, full of mercy, abounding in steadfast love. Make us steadfast in our confession of faith and enable us to live in accord with our confession. Thank you for our Savior, who seeks and saves the lost, stills the storms, reconciles us to you, and purchases our forgiveness with his life, amen. (Based on Jonah 1:3-11; James 4:1-3; Isa. 59:2)
