David wrote Psalms when his heart was full of adoration for the Lord, but he also wrote Psalms during the critical, most difficult moments of his life. He would write declarations of faith; prayers for deliverance, calling out to God for help, but most of all, to remind himself again and again of his faith and trust in God. 
 
This is the key to doing well when you’re in the thick of great troubles. Life is filled with trouble; Jesus said the same in John 16, “In this world you will have tribulation, but take courage, I have overcome the world.” David’s troubles were epic. 
 
 To do well in the thick of great trouble, you need your faith to arise; to take courage, knowing that the Lord has overcome. Knowing that He will walk with you in that trouble and will bring you through to the other side. Psalm 3 reminds you of that great truth. Meditate on this Psalm, speak it to your own heart. 
 
 There are troubles that come simply because we live in a troubled and broken world. There are troubles that come because of afflictions and distresses brought by others against us, and there are troubles of our own making. 
 
 The troubles of our own making are often the most difficult to know how to respond to. It’s common for people to just assign themselves to the trouble, “I did this to myself; I deserve this, I’ll just have to endure it.” 
 
 How does God see it? Does God look at those troubles, the troubles of your own making, and say, “Well don’t come to Me for help, you made this mess, you can just clean it up.” I submit that God does not respond that way. 
 
 One of the things I have always loved about the Lord is that He doesn’t leave us in times of trouble, even troubles of our own making. The key is to fully trust God in those troubles, to call out to Him to help and to save. 
 
 To fully appreciate Psalm 3, we need to understand what was happening in David’s life when he wrote it. There is a little introduction written at the beginning of the Psalm which says, “A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son.” 
 
Now that’s a story worth remembering. David had been doing so well, but then he made tragic choices that brought epic consequences. All of that culminated in David fleeing Jerusalem from his son Absalom. It was his darkest hour. 
 
David sinned terribly when he took Bathsheba as his own and then arranged for her husband to die in battle. At first, he tried to keep it to himself, but God would not have it; He sent Nathan the prophet to confront him, “You are the man,” Nathan said to him. How David responded is a life lesson. He fully trusted God to forgive; and then to rescue and save… 
 
Psalm 32:5-7, I acknowledged my sin to You… I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord”; and You forgave the guilt of my sin… You are my hiding place; You preserve me from trouble; You surround me with songs of deliverance. 
 
The consequences of David’s failure began to be seen in his family. His son, Amnon, raped his half-sister, Tamar, but David, paralyzed by his own sin, took no action. Finally, Tamar's brother, Absalom, took matters into his own hands and arranged for Amnon's death. Absalom then fled the country and was banished for three years while David again took no action. 
 
Finally, David extended mercy to Absalom and had him brought back to Jerusalem but would not see his face. For two more years, bitterness built up in Absalom’s heart because David refused to see him. Finally, Absalom pleaded to see David's face and when David agreed to see him, David kissed Absalom in full reconciliation. 
 
But it was too late. Absalom decided to conspire against David. He provided chariots and horses for himself and 50 men as runners before him. It gave the appearance that Absalom was a mighty warrior though he had never fought in a single battle in his life.

3. In Genesis 15, we are told that God promised Abraham that an heir would come from his own body, even though he was advanced in years. 
4. After considering God’s promise, his old age, and most importantly, the character of the One who promised, we’re told that. . . 
 
Genesis 15:6, Abram believed God and it was reckoned to him as righteousness. 
 
5. Genesis 15 could be characterized as Abraham’s “mountain-top experience” with God. 
6. But we are quickly dragged into the “valley of testing” in Genesis 16. 
7. In fact, the impact of Abraham and Sarah’s decision in Genesis 16 is still felt to this very day. Why? 
8. Because Abraham and Sarah failed to wait for God’s best. 
9. From this passage, we will uncover principles to help us patiently wait for God’s best because “God’s Best is Worth the Wait.” 
Genesis 16:1-6 
 
Transition – While you are waiting for God’s best, please remember that. . . 
 
I. God Knows Your Pain (1) 
 
• When the wait is long and it looks like there is no relief in sight for the problems that plague you, it’s difficult to wait for God’s best. 
• Questions about God’s love for us or His ability to deliver us can flood our hearts and minds. 
• At times it may feel like God is far away and your prayers are unanswered; the silence can be discouraging and overwhelming. 
 
Transition – What was Sarah’s pain? 
 
A. Sarah’s Pain: No Child 
1. For Sarah, being childless was her deepest wound. 
2. For Abraham, the matter was settled in Genesis 15 because had God promised he would have a son from his own, old body. 
 
Genesis 15:4, Then behold, the word of the LORD came to him, saying, “This man will not be your heir; but one who will come forth from your own body, he shall be your heir.” 
 
3. But for Sarah, the matter was unresolved. 
4. Abraham was specifically mentioned, but Sarah was not. 
5. Yet, it is clearly implied that Sarah was included. 
a. Note: Emphasis on “Abram’s wife” (1). 
b. Conclusion: God included Sarah in His promise to Abraham because they were married. 
6. Children are a blessing from God. 
a. In that day, there was great stigma for those who were childless. 
b. Their culture believed that parents lived on through their children. 
7. If a husband and wife were childless, they were considered cursed with extinction. 
a. No child? “What did you do wrong? There must be sin in your life.” 
b. No child? “God’s hand is against you. He has cursed you.” 
 
APPL – Whatever your issue, struggle, or pain; God knows and God cares for you. 
• Your heavenly Father invites you to bring your deepest wounds, anxieties, and fears to Him. 
• God is waiting for you. 
• Cast your cares upon the Lord and wait for His best. 
• God’s answers are perfect and so is His timing. David said. . . 
 
Psalm 34:4, 6, I sought the LORD, and He answered me, and delivered me from all my fears. . . . This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him and saved him out of all his troubles. 
 
 
 
B. Sarah’s Temptation: “I need a back-up plan.” 
1. Hagar was an Egyptian maid. 
a. She was young and beautiful. 
b. She was loyal, or so Sarah thought. 
c. But as an Egyptian maid, Hagar was outside of the LORD’S covenant with Abraham because she was not Abraham’s wife. 
2. It is also important to note that Hagar was acquired because of compromise. 
3. There was a famine in the land of Canaan so Abraham traveled down to Egypt for food (Genesis 12:10). 
4. But fear gripped Abraham’s heart as he entered Egypt and he forgot the LORD’S promise that he had just received. 
 
Genesis 12:2-3, And I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great; and so you shall be a blessing; and I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.

After 40 years of wandering in the desert, the Israelites finally come to the edge of the promised land. Moses is dead, and Joshua has taken over the leadership of Israel. 
All those who have been unfaithful and did not want to enter the promised land 40 years before, had by now died in the desert; all except Joshua and Caleb who were already ready 40 years before to enter the promised land, trusting God that He would give them the land as promised. 
So, as they get to the river Jordan, they again face an obstacle like their fathers did at the Red Sea. It was flood season, and the river Jordan was overflowing its banks. There was no way to cross over to the promised land. 
This time, Moses wasn’t there to put his staff in the water. This time the presence of God represented by the ark of the covenant would be what would part the waters. 
So as the priests stepped into the water, the river backed up and they crossed over on dry land. God told them to take 12 stones, one for each tribe of Israel, from the riverbed and place it on the riverbank as a sign or memorial for generations to come, to commemorate how God brought them through the river into the promised land. 
By now we know that the whole journey from Egypt to the promised land is a type of a person coming to Christ and growing into a mature believer while taking hold of the promises of God. 
In the section following this, we once again find important principles of how to enter into God’s promises. We see that God revealed himself to them with this miracle at the Jordan. This then produces a response from them. 
Many today come to Christ but never take hold of the promises of God. How do we do this? In this section, we find some insight on how to enter into God’s promises. 
I. Experience God Personally 
 The first thing we see is that none of these people, except Joshua and Caleb, had actually been in Egypt. So, they never saw the mighty move of the hand of God and what God did at the Red Sea. These were things that God did to show himself strong and reveal himself to Israel. 
 These people that now had to cross into the promised land were all born in the desert. It is all they knew. Even the manna that they ate every morning might not even be seen as a sign of God anymore. It had become so consistent that it was almost as natural as rain is to us, not supernatural. 
 Before they could enter the promised land, they would have to experience God for themselves. 
 For this to happen, they had to experience a challenge for themselves so that God could use it to show His greatness and His power. 
Illus - I was very fortunate and blessed to grow up in a house with parents that loved the Lord. Many times, I would hear stories of wonderful things God did… 
A. God reveals Himself 
 In chapter 4 God almost replicates the same Red Sea miracle at the Jordan. God reveals Himself and shows His mighty hand. He gives the reason why in verses 22 to 24. 
Joshua 4:22-24, then you shall inform your children, saying, ‘Israel crossed this Jordan on dry ground.’ For the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed, just as the Lord your God had done to the Red Sea, which He dried up before us until we had crossed; that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty, so that you may fear the Lord your God forever.” 
 God could have brought them through the Jordan in a dryer season, but God did this for their benefit so that their faith would be strengthened, knowing beyond a shadow of a doubt that God existed and that He was their God. 
 This would not only be a sign to them. It would also be a sign to their descendants. Their descendants would not go back to Egypt or the Red Sea to see the monuments there, but they would regularly pass by this point and be reminded of what God is done.

1. We can all relate to fear. 
2. Whether it’s COVID-19 or some new variant, the threat of China against Taiwan or the anti-Semitic aggressions of Iran against Israel, inflation or recession, inflated fuel prices or learning how to fill up your gas tank for the first time in Oregon, we can all relate to fear. 
3. Or on a more personal level, whether it’s spiders or snakes, never getting married or getting divorced, finding a job or losing your job, failing health or the death of a loved one, the relative who won’t talk to you or an in-law who still hasn’t gone home after their Christmas visit; again, we can all relate to fear. 
4. We might not have the same fears or go through the same trials, but all of us have experienced fear, especially when trials come; when our “What ifs” or “Worst case scenarios” become a very present reality. 
5. During our study, we will examine a passage that’s familiar to many, if not all of us – the epic battle between David and Goliath. 
6. But we’re not going to study David’s actual defeat of Goliath. 
7. Rather, we’re going to look at the epic battle before the battle in order to discover some of the enemy’s tactics as well as some critical principles from God’s Word to help us walk victoriously When Trials Come. 
1 Samuel 17:1-11, 16 
 
Context 
1. When we come to 1 Samuel 17, it’s important to note that Israel’s first king, Saul, had been rejected by God because he had disobeyed God’s command when he failed to completely destroy the Amalekites (1 Samuel 15). 
2. So, God had found someone to replace Saul, a man after His own heart, a young shepherd from Bethlehem, his name was David. 
3. In fact, at this point, the prophet Samuel had already anointed David as king (1 Samuel 16:13), but David did not begin to reign until much later (2 Samuel 2). 
4. God allowed Saul to reign as king to reveal that: 
a. Saul was disqualified and rejected as king. 
b. While David was anointed to be the next king. 
c. In many ways, this trial with the Philistines was God’s way of introducing David to Israel, a divine message that God’s favor was resting upon their next king. 
 
Transition – With this context in mind, the first biblical principle to help us walk victoriously when trials come is. . . 
 
I. Stand Your Ground in Christ (1-3) 
 
• Unfortunately, many Christians give up ground when trials come; perhaps you can relate. 
• But when trials come, that is the time when we must stand our ground in Christ. 
 
A. Satan always seeks to steal ground from us (1) 
1. Notice where the Philistines set up camp. 
a. The Philistines set up camp in a town called Socoh (1). 
b. Where was Socoh located? In Judah. 
 c. Who gave Socoh to Judah? God. 
 
Joshua 15:20-21, 35, This is the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Judah according to their families. Now the cities at the extremity of the tribe of the sons of Judah were. . . Socoh and Azekah 
 
2. When the Philistine set up camp in Socoh they were declaring to Israel that Socoh now belonged to the Philistines. 
3. At first glance one might concede and ask, “Socoh was just a border town. Why would it matter?” 
4. It mattered because strong border towns are essential for the stability of any nation. 
5. If a country is unable to protect its borders, then it won’t be long before the rest of the nation and even its capital are vulnerable as well. 
 
APPL – Spiritually speaking, “stealing ground” is a common tactic employed by Satan against God’s people 
 
John 10:10a, The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy 
 
• The enemy will look for vulnerable areas first. 
• Then, little by little, the enemy will take and occupy as much ground as each Christian is willing to surrender. 
• The enemy seeks to steal our vision in order to destroy our hopes and dreams. 
• The enemy also seeks to steal our testimony in order to destroy our witness.

2. Whether it’s COVID-19 or some new variant, the threat of China against Taiwan or the anti-Semitic aggressions of Iran against Israel, inflation or recession, inflated fuel prices or learning how to fill up your gas tank for the first time in Oregon, we can all relate to fear.

After David defeated the Philistines giant, the people loved him. And it happened after that great victory, that whenever King Saul would come to a village or a city, the women of Israel would come out singing and dancing to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with joy and musical instruments, and the women sang as they played, “Saul has slain his thousands, but David his ten thousands.” 
 
 When Saul heard this, he became very angry, for this saying displeased him, and he said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, but to me they have ascribed only thousands. Now what more can he have but the kingdom?” From that moment on Saul despised David. Fear, anger, and jealousy consumed him. 
 
 The Holy Spirit had left Saul, he was no longer moving by the anointing of the Holy Spirit in his life, he was living out his human nature in all its ugliness. God rejected him as king and he found himself fighting against God, kicking against the goads. He was trying desperately to hold on to his position as king of Israel and David was standing in his way. 
 
 In fact, in chapter 20, David says, “There is hardly a step between me and death.” David was surely right; Saul was relentless in his pursuit. 
 
Saul tried to pin David to the wall by hurling a spear at him - twice. When he heard that his daughter, Michal, loved David, he agreed to the marriage, but only because he thought it could be an opportunity for his death. Instead of a dowry, Saul asked for the life of 100 of his enemies, the Philistines. “Let the Philistines kill him,” Saul thought. What a father-in-law he would be! 
 
That plot failed. David came back victorious after killing 200 Philistines. Saul's plots against David were backfiring. Instead of defeating David, his popularity in Israel was increasing. Saul's son, Jonathan, was David's best friend, David was still alive… and now he was married to his daughter Michal. 
 
But Saul refused to give up. He sent messengers to David’s house to watch him, to put him to death when he came out. But David's wife let him down through a window and he fled and escaped. 
 
 David was right, there was hardly a step between him and death. And there is a sense in which this is true of every person; there is only a step between all of us and death, life is short, and no one knows how much time he has. 
 
 Therefore, we need to know what it means to spend our lives well. 
 
I. Live Like You’re Only a Step Away 
 
 “As the Lord lives,” David said, “there is hardly a step between me and death.” 
 
 But when you have eternity in view, when you have heaven in your heart, it changes your perspective; it changes how you see life. 
 
 There is no fear in death for those who know that taking that one step means being in the presence of God, your Savior… 
 
 When Paul was arrested and held in prison, waiting to stand in judgment by Caesar, not knowing if he would live or die, he wrote… 
 
Philippians 1:20-21, According to my earnest expectation and hope… Christ will even now, as always, be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 
 
A. Our days are ordained by God 
 
 From David’s perspective there was only one step between him and death, but he wouldn't take that step until it was ordained by God. 
 
Psalm 139:16, In Your book were all written the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them. 
 
Illus - When our daughter died, she was 29 years old. Before she was born, God wrote in His book next to her name, 10,724, the number of her days. I respect God, so I respect that number. 
 
 When you realize that God has ordained the number of your days, it makes you want to cherish each one of them. 
 
 When a person is young, they often have a sense of immortality; they don't think much about death. But when you get older, you realize you're getting closer. 
 
 For some, that brings fear.
