On our recent trip to Israel, we had an opportunity to spend an evening next to the shore of the Sea of Galilee. We gathered around a bonfire, worshiping our Lord with fellow believers. A gentle breeze blowing off the waves. 
It’s times like that that make you think about all that God has done in your life. It was truly a beautiful, holy moment. It makes you thankful for God’s grace in giving us what we do not deserve. 
One of the ways that God’s grace has been revealed in my life is the grace to start over. I’m so thankful that God never gave up on me. When I faltered and when I failed, God’s grace was extended to start over. 
One of the most beautiful stories of God’s grace to start over was Jesus restoring Simon Peter after he failed miserably. We can all relate to failure; the question is, how do you recover from it? 
Once a person has failed the enemy has a powerful weapon, and that weapon is shame. But the beauty and the power of the story is that God takes away the shame and restores Peter in His great love and renews the purpose and calling on his life. 
The story begins shortly after the resurrection of Jesus. The resurrection changes everything. It changed the meaning of the cross. Before the resurrection, it represented death and struck fear in the hearts of any who looked upon a cross. But after the resurrection, it became a symbol of hope and a reminder of how much God loves. It has become a thing of beauty that represents hope. That’s why we place crosses on graves. 
 The resurrection changed death itself. Before, the grave was the final chapter, the end of all hope, the final curtain. But because of the resurrection, death no longer is master over us, it has been conquered, it has been defeated. Our last breath is not the end; that is when life truly begins. 
 The resurrection gave us an eternal perspective. Before, all we could hope for was here on earth; our purpose, the meaning of life, it was all centered here, on the material, on things which are earthly. Now, because of the resurrection, all those things seem so unimportant when compared to the eternal weight of glory. We have been set free. 
 I read the story of a man who was radically changed because he understood how much God loved him when the Lamb of God died on the cross. When he was a young boy, a neighbor gave him a baby lamb. It became his constant companion and best friend. One day he came home to find his father in a drunken rage, fixing a flat tire. Out of curiosity, the boy’s pet lamb had wandered over, but the father, in a drunken rage, struck the lamb with a tire iron, and killed it. 
Hatred filled the boy’s heart. He was never the same. He hated everyone and everything, including himself. Many years later, a friend invited him to church. The pastor was speaking about a Lamb; the Lamb of God who died on the cross, willingly giving his life because of love. 
 For the first time in his life, he understood love. The Lamb of God died so he could receive love; the Father’s love he had never known. It changed him; he could feel the hatred leaving his heart as he gave his heart to this love. 
 When you look at this chapter in the book of John, it’s about starting over; it’s about the new life that God has in store for us. It’s about faith, hope, and love.

The section we are in today is set in the time when the Jews were taken into exile to Babylon. From biblical history, we see that God warned them many times that if they would continue following foreign gods and idols, this would happen. 
To a certain degree, God was giving them exactly what they wanted, showing them the effect of idol worship, as they were taken away as captives to the idolatrous capital, Babylon. When the heart follows after other things it inevitably leads to captivity. 
So now they find themselves in Babylon and you can imagine there could be some confusion about what they should do now. They were in this predicament because they did not worship God and were not faithful to God. 
Some, like Daniël and his friends, were faithful to God, but were part of this collective. 
Some might’ve felt that there was no hope left. Others listened to false prophets like Hananiah who prophesied that this hardship would all be over within two years. 
So, either they were sitting in the corner, having given up on the future, or ‘living from their suitcases’ stuck in the waiting. 
 We then come to this section where Jeremiah sends this letter to the exiles in Babylon which cements the truth and shows them God’s heart. This would also give them direction and a vision for the future. 
Although they as a nation have forsaken God and were experiencing the consequences, God was not done with them and had not given up on them. Although they were unfaithful, God stays faithful to His word and His promises. This season that they were going through was not the end as God was also in this. 
There is much to apply to our lives as well. Many go through seasons that are sometimes difficult with questions that arise challenging their faith. Sometimes it is because of their own choices of the past. God will sometimes allow you to follow the desires of your heart so that you can see the destructive force behind it. 
Or sometimes, like Daniel and his three friends, you find yourself in a challenging situation even though you were faithful to God. 
We will see in the section that God is faithful and that we should hold on to His promises. The plans He has for us are to prosper, and not to harm, plans to give us hope and a future. 
He wants to confirm our identity in Him, grounding us in our relationship with Him instead of the things of the world. 
I. Hold on To God’s Word 
In times of trouble and uncertainty, there are many voices with many opinions. As said before, there were even false prophets who brought different words, confusing the people concerning their future. 
This is so relevant in the day and age that we live in. So many voices are stirring confusion in the hearts of people. Jeremiah was bringing the true word of God to cut through the lies and bring direction and hope to the people. Now they had to hold on to this word. 
A. Look to God 
 Verse 4 – ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel…’’ It is so comforting to see these words. After they messed up, God did not give up on them. He did not turn a blind eye to them. God still had something to say. God was and is intimately involved in the process. 
 This showed God’s heart. He allowed this because He loved them and did not want them to be destroyed. 
 Not only this, but God reaffirms His power, the Lord of Hosts, and their relationship to Him, reaffirming Himself as the God of Israel. 
 In effect, God is drawing their attention back to Him, speaking truth into their situation. 
Illus – Sometimes as a parent, you need to take your child’s face in your hands, look them straight in the eye, and speak words of encouragement and truth into their lives… 
 We need to regularly be reminded of who God is, and what truth He is speaking over our lives, especially when we go through times of trouble and uncertainty. 
 He is the God of heaven and earth. When He speaks, it will be done. He watches over his promises.

This book is named after the hero of the story, Esther, who is used by God to save Israel from the threat of complete annihilation. Israel found themselves on the very precipice of destruction. They were literally one step away from disaster. 
 
 This is a very important book to Israel. It is celebrated every year as the Feast of Purim. The word Purim is a Persian word meaning ‘lots.’ It comes from a part of the story where the enemy of Israel casts lots to determine the day in which Israel would be annihilated and every Jew murdered. 
 
 Purim is a festive and joyous occasion for Jews all over the world. The book of Esther is read both at night and in the morning of Purim. Whenever the name of their mortal enemy, Haman is mentioned in that reading, the Jews shake noisemakers. The children dress up in costumes, and everyone enjoys a festive holiday meal. Everyone gives gifts of pastries and other food to their friends and neighbors. Gifts of money, food or drinks are given to the poor. 
 
The day before Purim is a fast day called the ‘Fast of Esther.’ It commemorates how Esther and the entire Jewish community fasted for 3 days before Esther approached the king of Persia to intercede for the Jewish nation. 
 
In many ways, the story is about how the hand of God moves over the nations of the world, but also through the events of everyday lives. The history of nations is turned by the events of individual lives. 
 
 Although the book is about the story of Esther, God is the main character in the story. Interestingly, God is not mentioned by name or by any reference in this book. Yet it is irrefutable that the story is about the hand of God moving in nations, in individual lives, and in saving His people, Israel. 
 
 Faith is strengthened when you see how the hand of God moves. God’s power is on full display in this book. So is the nature of spiritual warfare. We need to strengthen our discernment spiritually to recognize how the hand of God moves in nations and the depth of spiritual warfare that was happening not only in those days but is also happening today. 
 
 The story takes place in the capital of Persia, modern-day Iran, just prior to the days of Ezra and Nehemiah. Israel had been defeated by Babylon who carried them away into exile those 70 years. But then Babylon itself was defeated by the Persians and Medes. 
 
 The story begins in Chapter 1 by declaring the expanse and power of the Persian Empire. It stretched from Ethiopia to India, reigning over 127 provinces. Leaders in Iran today long for the days of such power. And after all these years, they still harbor deep resentment against Israel. They are building coalitions of nations and provinces for the very purpose of destroying Israel. 
 
 We know much of the history of this king and of Persia. Here he is called Ahasuerus, he is also known as Xerxes, son of Darius I. 
 
 Darius is mentioned many times in the book of Ezra. Enemies of Israel arose against them as they were rebuilding the temple, but Darius strongly supported Israel and issued a decree that nothing should hinder the work of rebuilding the temple there in Jerusalem. 
 
 Darius is also infamous for his invasion of Greece which Darius wanted defeated and subjugated under his reign. However, his forces were defeated at the famous Battle of Marathon. 
 
In fact, modern-day marathon races trace their origin to that battle. Nearing defeat, the Persian navy turned their ships toward Athens. Seeing this, a runner was dispatched to run the entire distance from Marathon to Athens nonstop with the news of their impending danger. Upon reaching Athens, the runner relayed his urgent news, collapsed, and died. The distance from the city of Marathon to Athens has now become the distance of all marathon races. 
 
Darius attempted to rebuild his forces but died before this could be completed. His son, Xerxes, or Ahasuerus in the Bible restarted the preparations for a second invasion of Greece.

2. If you’ve ever taken a ride on the “fear train” then you know it’s a ride that can take you to some very scary places. 
3. How can we break free from fear? 
4. During our study, we will discover how the LORD can help us break free from fear by looking at what He did for Moses in Exodus 6:28-7:7. 
 
Exodus 6:28-7:7 
 
Context 
1. In Exodus 3, we’re told that after 400 years in Egypt, in fulfillment of His promise to Abraham in Genesis 15, God revealed that He was going to deliver Israel from slavery. 
2. From a burning bush on Mount Sinai, God commissioned Moses to lead Israel out of Egypt. 
3. But sensing some hesitation, God attempted to reassure Moses by giving him promises and signs which would confirm that God had commissioned Moses. 
a. Promise: God would deliver Israel from slavery in Egypt and bring them “to a good and spacious land, to a land flowing with milk and honey” (3:8). 
b. Promise: God would be with Moses (3:12). 
c. Promise: After Moses brought Israel out of Egypt, they would “worship God” at Mount Sinai (3:12). 
d. Promise: Israel would “pay heed” to what Moses said (3:18). 
e. Promise: God would strike Egypt with miraculous judgments and Pharaoh would eventually let Israel go (3:20). 
f. Promise: Israel “would plunder the Egyptians” as they left Egypt (3:22). 
g. Sign: Moses’ staff turned into a serpent (4:2-5). 
h. Sign: Affliction and cleansing of leprosy (4:6-7). 
i. Sign: Water from Nile River turned to blood (4:8-9). 
4. In addition to these six promises and three signs, in Exodus 3:14, God also revealed His personal name to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM” (“Yahweh” is translated as “LORD” in our English Bibles). 
5. According to Exodus 6:2-3, when God revealed His personal name, Yahweh, to Moses on Mount Sinai, God had revealed something about Himself to Moses which had not been revealed to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 
6. In essence, God was proclaiming that He, the great “I AM,” “Yahweh,” could and would provide all that Moses and Israel needed. 
a. The name “Yahweh,” “I AM,” reveals that God is self-existent, eternal, infinite, never changing, all powerful, all knowing, and everywhere present. 
b. The name “Yahweh” also reveals that God is the promise-making, promise-keeping God of Israel. 
c. That should have been the end of the story. . . Yahweh would be with Moses when he spoke to Israel and confronted Pharaoh. 
 
Transition – But was it good enough for Moses? 
• The answer is a resounding “No.” 
• Notice how the LORD broke Moses free from fear. . . 
 
I. The LORD Confronts Your Fears (28-30) 
 
A. The LORD knows your secret fears (28-29) 
1. God repeatedly told Moses to confront Pharaoh. Why? 
a. Because God wanted to deliver Israel and had chosen Moses to do so. 
b. But before God could use Moses, Moses needed to learn how to walk by faith and not by sight. 
 
APPL – One way the LORD confronts our fears is through a crisis. 
 
2. God put His finger on the issue that created fear in Moses. 
3. So, God took Moses out of his comfort zone to strengthen him by stretching him. 
 
APPL – This is something that good parents will do with their children, a parent will stretch their child in order to strengthen their child. 
 
ILLUS – Fetching a can of tomato soup 
 
APPL – God knows our secret fears and He wants to set us free from them, all of them. 
 
2 Timothy 1:7, For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. (NKJV) 
 
B. Confess your fears to the LORD (30) 
1. Once again, Moses used the same old excuse. 
a. “Unskilled in speech.” 
b. Pharaoh would not listen. 
c. So, send someone else. 
2. But the Book of Acts paints a different picture regarding Moses’ speaking ability. 
 
Acts 7:22, And Moses was educated in all the learning of the Egyptians, and he was a man of power in words and deeds. 
 
3. While it’s true that Moses was making excuses, I believe it’s also true that it’s how he felt. 
 
APPL – When your heart is overwhelmed by fear, the best thing you can do is to confess your fears to the LORD because. . . 
• He cares for you. 
 
1 Peter 5:7, casting all your anxiety upon Him, because He cares for you.
