1. What kind of person blesses our Heavenly Father’s heart? 
2. Tonight, we’re going to look at one of my favorites in the Bible, Caleb. 
3. In Numbers 14:24, God said that His servant Caleb “had a different spirit” therefore God promised he would have an inheritance in the Promise Land. 
4. Why was Caleb’s spirit different? 
5. Usually when someone is called “different”, there is some negativity implied. 
6. But this was not the case with Caleb. 
7. God’s testimony about Caleb gives us insight into the kind of person God wants all of us to be. 
8. The kind of person that causes God to take notice and say, “Well done My good and faithful servant.” 
 
Joshua 14:6-15 
 
Context 
1. Joshua 14 is where the story gets very interesting. The sons of Judah came to Joshua and Caleb said to him, "You remember the word which the Lord spoke to Moses concerning you and me at Kadesh Barnea. He swore to us that the land on which our foot has trodden shall be our inheritance. Now then, give me the land which was promised." 
2. Caleb was an amazing person and there is much to learn from his life. At this point he was 85 years old and he said that he was just as strong as when he was 40 years old. 
3. Caleb wanted the most difficult land in Israel. It was the most difficult because it was hill country, with difficult terrain. 
4. But its greatest challenge was that the Anakim were there. The sons of Anak were large people and it was they who had put fear into the hearts of Israel at Kadesh Barnea 45 years earlier. 
5. Caleb had been waiting 45 years for an opportunity to face the sons of Anak and take the hill country that God had promised him. 
6. It’s important to see that the Promised Land is also a picture of a believer who is walking victoriously by faith. It takes courage to take hold of God’s promises and Caleb is a tremendous example for us. 
 
Transition - Like Caleb we must… 
 
I. Follow God Wholeheartedly 
 
• In verse eight, Caleb compared himself to the ten spies who went up into the land of Canaan and came back with a bad report. 
• The other spies made the heart of the people melt with fear, so that’s why Caleb said, "But I followed the Lord my God fully." 
• The results of faith versus fear become immediately clear to all. 
• Five times in this section Caleb pointed out that he had followed the Lord wholeheartedly, which is a key to understanding the strength of Caleb's faith. 
 
A. We must let faith strengthen our hearts 
1. If you go back 45 years earlier, you can see that faith and fear have a direct impact on what happens in the heart. 
2. Caleb pointed out the problem perfectly when he said in verse eight that because of fear the heart of the people melted. 
Numbers 13:30-31, 33, Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, “We should by all means go up and take possession of it, for we shall surely overcome it.” But the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are too strong for us. There also we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim); and we became like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.” 
 
3. The problem was that the spies only saw the troubles and challenges. They saw that there were giants in the land, then they looked at themselves and saw themselves only as grasshoppers in their own eyes. 
4. In other words, the giants and the challenges were great, and they were too small. They made a direct comparison between the problem and themselves and that is where they made a huge mistake. 
The greatest fear that people have is the fear of the unknown. “What if this or that happens?” Right now, people are wondering… 
• What if I get COVID-19? 
• What if I lose my job? 
• What if the economy collapses? 
5. But Caleb saw God’s promises when others saw giants. 
6. Like Caleb, we must take hold of God’s perspective and trust every promise He gives us from His Word.

 Our world is on edge. In many ways, our world is and has been defined by fear. 
2. But should the same be true for God’s people? 
3. Should the fear that puts our world on edge also overcome and define born-again disciples of Jesus Christ? 
4. The Apostle Paul answered this question when he wrote to his son-in-the-faith, Timothy. 
 
2 Timothy 1:7, God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. (NKJV) 
 
5. If God has not given us a spirit of fear, then how can His power, His love, and His truth transform our hearts when we feel afraid? 
6. Tonight, as we look at the prophetic praises of John the Baptist’s father, Zacharias, we will discover life-changing answers so that we may stand confident in what God has done for us and Fear Not. 
 
Luke 1:67-80 
 
Context 
1. Luke’s Gospel is filled with interesting twists. 
2. First, there is a barren couple, Zacharias and Elizabeth, who had a son in their old age. 
3. Next, is the name they gave their son. The angel Gabriel told Zacharias to name his child John, which means “Yahweh is gracious”. (13) 
4. But in that day, the traditional thing to do was to name a firstborn son after the father or grandfather. 
4. That’s exactly what the crowd expected Zacharias and Elizabeth to do when they brought their newborn to the Temple on the eighth day to have him circumcised. (59) 
5. Now, Zacharias had been mute for over nine months because he doubted the words of the angel Gabriel, so their family and friends turned to Elizabeth to confirm their son would be called Zacharias Jr. 
6. To the crowd’s amazement, Elizabeth resisted their pressure and rejected their tradition and literally said, “No! He must be named John.” (60) 
7. Not satisfied with Elizabeth’s answer, the crowd turned to Zacharias. (61-62) 
8. Zacharias motioned for a tablet and the moment he wrote “His name is John”, his tongue was loosed. (63) 
9. With nine-months’ worth praise in his heart, Zacharias began to bless the Lord for all that He had done. (64) 
10. The praises of Zacharias are important because they are filled with Old Testament quotes and references. 
11. But his praises are also significant because Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, which means God’s Spirit enabled him to prophesy about God’s will. 
12. From the prophetic praise of Zacharias, we discover reasons to have faith in what God has done for us and Fear Not. 
 
 
I. God has Raised Up a Horn of Salvation (68-75) 
 
• The praise of Zacharias has been called “Benedictus” based on his first words in verse 68. 
• Notice what Zacharias praised God for. 
 
A. God has set the prisoners free (68-69) 
1. Remember, there had not been a prophet in Israel since Malachi; God had been silent for 400 years. 
a. Why the divine “silent treatment”? Because Israel wasn’t listening so God was silent until they were ready to pay attention. 
b. What were some of God’s last words to Israel? 
 
Malachi 3:1, Behold, I am going to send My messenger, and he will clear the way before Me. 
 
2. Zacharias knew John’s birth meant God had visited Israel because God had chosen John to go before Messiah in fulfillment of Malachi 3:1. (68) 
a. The word visit means “come to help.” 
b. It reveals that God is concerned about us and has come to help us because we cannot help ourselves. 
3. Why do we need God’s help? Because we are enslaved to sin; imprisoned by our sinful nature and choices. 
4. So, God “accomplished redemption for His people.” (68) 
a. The word redemption means that God paid the price to free us from slavery to sin along with the judgment it brings.

We are nearing the end of the book of Deuteronomy. Moses is giving his last message to the people of Israel to prepare them to cross the Jordan and enter the land God promised. When you read Deuteronomy, you discern right away that Moses is pouring out his heart to the people of Israel. 
 
 He wants them to succeed, he wants them to prosper. He knows this will only happen if they stay near to God. Over and over he admonishes them to love God with all their heart and with all their soul. 
 
 Moses gave instructions that after Israel crosses the Jordan into the land of Canaan, they were to bring the people into a small valley with Mount Ebal on one side and Mount Gerizim on the other. Then they were to station men on each mountain. From Mount Ebal, they were to call out the curses of God; the troubles and difficulties that would come if they turned away from God and followed the gods of the world. 
 
From Mount Gerizim the men were to call out the blessings of following God with all their heart and with all their soul. They were then to choose. “See, I set before you life and death,” God was saying to the people of Israel, “now choose life that you might live.” 
 
There are things in life of which you have no control that determine the course of your life; the family you’re born into, the country and community into which you were raised, if you were born into privilege or poverty. You have no control over these things. 
 
But there are many other things that are within your power to choose that determine the course of your life. In the valley between Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim the people stood and listened. From Mount Ebal they heard of disasters and troubles and difficulties that would come because they did not serve the Lord their God, Moses said, “with joy in a glad heart, for the abundance of all things.” 
 
 From Mount Gerizim they heard of the blessings that would come upon them and overtake them if they would obey the Lord their God. “Blessed shall you be in the city and blessed shall you be in the country. Your crops will be blessed, your herds and the young of your flock will increase, your basket and kneading bowl will be blessed. Blessed shall you be when you come in and blessed shall you be when you go out.” 
 
 “See,” God is saying,” I set before you life and death. Choose life that you may live.” Every parent understands this heart. You want your children to do well, you want them to choose life and you know that there are certain decisions they will make that will set the direction of the course of their lives; not just their career, but the content of the their character and whether they choose to follow God and love Him with all their heart and with all their soul. 
 
God wants them to choose life, but He also understands that they may choose to turn their hearts away from Him. If they do, the results will be disastrous. But then He tells them that God will take them back. It’s never too late to come back to God; it’s never too late to start your life over; it’s never too late to make the right decisions and correct the course of your life. 
 
 What an encouragement this chapter is. God sets before you life and death, good and evil, and He asks you to choose. The course of your life hinges on the decisions you make. Choose well. Choose God; and choose life. 
 
I. Your Course Can be Corrected 
 
 God knows in advance there would come a time when their hearts would turn away from Him. 
 
 In that day, when you turn your heart away and disaster and trouble come; and then you look to God and turn your heart toward home, God was saying, here’s what God will do. He will welcome you home. It’s not too late to start over. It’s not too late to correct the course of your life. 
 
 God wants you to know His heart in advance, because you face the same choice as Israel. 
 
A. Return with all your heart

Divine Providence. The Founding Fathers of the United States of America were men who saw God working in the affairs of mankind to establish our great nation. 
2. Many of them spoke and wrote of the hand of God intervening on behalf of the Colonies during their struggle for independence. 
3. George Washington testified to the hand of God on his life, protecting him through many fierce battles. 
4. Washington wrote, “By the all-powerful dispensations of Providence, I have been protected beyond all human probability or expectation; for I had four bullets through my coat, and two horses shot under me, yet escaped unhurt…” 
5. After the Continental Congress selected him to lead the Continental Army, Washington sent a letter filled with words of faith and comfort to his wife, Martha. He wrote, “I shall rely, therefore, confidently on that Providence which has heretofore preserved and been bountiful to me, not doubting but that I shall return safe to you.” 
6. During our study this evening, we will discover what the Bible has to say about the hand of God; how God is involved in the affairs of His creation and by application, even our lives. 
7. From this, we will learn faith-strengthening principles so that we may know how we should respond to and even welcome the hand of God on our lives. 
 
Luke 1:57-66 
Context 
1. After the prophet Malachi, God did not speak to Israel for 400 years. God broke the silence by sending the angel Gabriel to an elderly priest named Zacharias, to tell him that his barren wife, Elizabeth, would give birth to a son; who would be the forerunner to Messiah. 
2. Six months into Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent Gabriel again; this time to Elizabeth’s relative, a teenage virgin who lived in a small town called Nazareth. Her name was Mary. 
3. What Gabriel told Mary marked the beginning of a new day in human history; a day that would forever change all days thereafter. 
4. Gabriel declared that the Holy Spirit would overshadow Mary, and she would have God’s Son, who would be the Savior of the world. 
5. When Mary heard Gabriel’s declaration, she made a declaration of her own, “Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” (38) 
6. After Gabriel departed, Mary, with great excitement, left Nazareth and hurried to the home of her relative, Elizabeth. (39-40) 
7. The moment Mary opened the door and greeted Elizabeth, God gave two signs to confirm that Mary was carrying God’s Son, the Savior of the world. (41, 44) 
a. First, the baby in Elizabeth’s womb leaped for joy. 
b. Second, the Holy Spirit filled Elizabeth and she prophesied about Mary and her Child. 
8. Elizabeth cried out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!” (42) 
9. Overwhelmed by God’s favor, with tears streaming down her face, Elizabeth asked a touching question which reveals that she understood the magnitude of what the Holy Spirit had shown her, “And how has it happened to me, that the mother of my Lord would come to me?” (43) 
a. Here, Elizabeth called the Baby in Mary’s womb “my Lord”. 
b. She recognized Jesus’ greatness, swore her allegiance, and submitted to His authority. 
c. Elizabeth rejoiced because God had graced her with the very presence of her Savior, Jesus; God had come to her. 
10. According to verse 56, Mary stayed with Elizabeth for “about three months, and then returned to her home.” 
a. This verse confirms that Mary was still a virgin because she was not living in Joseph’s home.

The book of Deuteronomy is an epic speech of Moses. It’s his last opportunity to speak to Israel before they cross the Jordan and enter the land God promised. Moses knew he could not cross the Jordan with them, and he wanted it to go well for them, so this is his last opportunity. He is seeking revival. 
 
 Moses knows that Israel must have their heart right before God if they are to obtain the promises God intends for them. The same is true for us; God seeks revival here among us, even now. We must have our heart right with God in order to live the victorious life and to obtain the promises God intends for us. 
 
 Here in chapter 18, he is forewarning them of spiritual danger. Part of spiritual revival is understanding how to keep your life from been spiritually shipwrecked. We are living in a time of great spiritual danger today. Keeping your heart from those things which bring spiritual darkness is part of revival. 
 
 But with a warning also comes a promise; one of the greatest promises of the Old Testament. “Those nations, which you shall dispossess,” Moses said, “listen to those who practice witchcraft and diviners, but as for you… The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me and you shall listen to Him.” 
 
I. Ambitiously Please God 
 
 That saying comes from the apostle Paul … 
 
2 Corinthians 5:7, 9, For we walk by faith, not by sight – Therefore we have as our ambition to be pleasing to Him. 
 
 Revival is about relationship to God. The key word there is relationship. Love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength… 
 
 God loves you so much that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him would not perish but have everlasting life. 
 
 Part of a relationship is the desire to please one another; to be a blessing. It also includes understanding what doesn’t please. 
 
Illus - We all have things that are displeasing; for example, if you were in a close relationship to me you would know there are certain things I don’t like. I don’t like cussing, I don’t like disrespect, I don’t like dishonesty. I love good humor, but I don’t like potty humor. How much more so does God have things that are displeasing to Him? God is good, and his nature is holy and righteous. 
 
 Moses wants Israel to know that there are things God finds not only displeasing, but detestable; they are contrary to His nature. 
 
Proverbs 6:16-19, There are six things which the Lord hates, yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that run rapidly to evil, a false witness who utters lies, and one who spreads strife among brothers. 
 
A. God’s heart is to protect you from evil 
 Every good parent wants to protect their children from evil influences. As parents, we have lived long enough to see how dangerous evil influences can be. Children are not aware; that’s why they need parents. 
 Our daughter was murdered by a 17-year-old boy who fell under every imaginable evil influence the world has to offer. 
 Therefore, we keep our children from the influence of bad friends, the culture of drugs and alcohol, from the wrongful influence of social media, the dark world of gaming, and the dark and sexual side of the Internet. 
 Every time and culture has their own set of influences that come from spiritual forces of darkness. 
Illus - Pastor Matthew and I are soon headed to Africa. There are still witch doctors, animism, and every kind of cultic practice influencing the people. 
 When Israel crossed the Jordan, they would be entering a land filled with spiritual darkness and spiritual danger. 
 In verses 10 through 14, Moses named the practices of the world that God detests. 
 There is a spiritual reality behind them; they are demonic in nature. 
 Do not be involved in these things, Moses says because they are detestable to God.

ILLUS – The man marooned on a deserted island with three grass huts. 
 
2. Sadly, it’s really easy for Christians to master the art of complaining too. 
3. But we, of all people, have reasons to rejoice and that’s why the Apostle Paul wrote, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4) 
4. Tonight, we will discover what those reasons for rejoicing are so that we may take off the garment of the grumbler and put on the mantle of praise. 
 
Luke 1:39-80 
 
1. After the prophet Malachi, God did not speak to Israel for 400 years. God broke the silence by sending the angel Gabriel to an elderly priest named Zacharias, to let him know that his barren wife, Elizabeth, would give birth to a son; who would be the forerunner to Messiah. 
2. Six months into Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God dispatched Gabriel again; this time not to a priest in Jerusalem, but to Elizabeth’s relative, a young woman who lived in a Podunk town called Nazareth. 
3. Nazareth was a wicked city with a bad reputation. 
a. Nazareth was not a “destination” location but a “just passing through” town, similar to today’s “rest stops” or “truck stops”. 
b. As a result, Nazareth was known for its loose living and immoral woman. 
4. But in the midst of Nazareth’s perversity, God took notice of a godly young woman, probably 15 to 16 years old, named Mary. 
5. What Gabriel told Mary marked the beginning of a new day in human history; a day that would forever change all days thereafter. 
6. Gabriel declared that the Holy Spirit would overshadow her, and she would have God’s Son, who would be the Savior of the world. 
7. When Mary heard Gabriel’s declaration, she made a declaration of her own, “Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” (38) 
 
APPL – Mary’s response is an example for us all. 
• Mary was not merely surrendering her body so that she could bear a child. 
• In Mary’s case, her reputation was at stake. 
• Mary could lose her fiancé, Joseph. 
• In fact, Mary could lose her very life. 
• Yet, when she weighed it all in the balance, she was willing to endure it all because God’s favor was upon her. She submitted to God’s will and to God’s word. 
Transition – Next, Luke recorded what happened when Mary visited Elizabeth. From their interaction, we discover why we have reasons to rejoice. 
 
I. Rejoice, We Have a Savior (39-45) 
 
• Ever since the Fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, all of creation has needed and been waiting for a Savior. 
• We were in a bad way; with three enemies waging war against our souls: 
o Satan; 
o A fallen and bankrupt world; 
o Eternal judgment because of our sin. 
 
Ephesians 2:1-2, 12, And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience… having no hope and without God in the world. 
 
Transition – But God was on the move. He made a way for us. 
 
A. God has come to us (39-44) 
1. Immediately after Gabriel made his declaration and Mary, with great excitement, left Nazareth and hurried to the home of her relative, Elizabeth. (39-40) 
2. The moment Mary opened the door and Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, God gave two signs to confirm that Mary was carrying God’s Son, the Savior of the world. (41, 44) 
a. First, the baby in Elizabeth’s womb leaped for joy. 
b. Second, the Holy Spirit filled Elizabeth and she prophesied about Mary and her Child. 
 
APPL – Now all moms agree that babies move in the womb. 
 
• But Elizabeth didn’t experience the typical baby kick. 
• Nor was Elizabeth experiencing Braxton-Hicks contractions. 
• The baby, who would one day be called John the Baptist, was filled with the Holy Spirit the moment Mary greeted Elizabeth and then testified about Jesus Christ for the first time!

When Jesus was teaching, large crowds would gather to hear Him speak, and in Luke 15, it says that all the tax gatherers and sinners were coming near to listen to Him. 
 
 When the Jewish leaders saw that sinners were drawing near to Him, however, they grumbled, saying, “Can you believe this? Look, this man receives sinners and even eats with them.” They thought they were accusing Him, but Jesus wanted sinners to draw near to Him. Even today, Jesus wants sinners to draw near. Jesus is often called ‘the friend of sinners.’ 
 
 The Jewish leaders were wrong. A lot of people are wrong when it comes to what Jesus thinks about them. Which reminds me of a funny story… A burglar broke into a house and as he was tiptoeing through the dark he heard a voice, “Jesus is watching you…” 
 
 Many people have the wrong view of God. Some think He’s always cranky because they’re convinced He’s angry with sinners. Other people think He’s out to ruin their lives to get back at them for all the ways they’ve messed up their lives. 
 
 But all of that’s wrong. Do you know why Jesus is called the friend of sinners? Because, “God loved the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him would not perish, but would have everlasting life.” 
 
 Jesus came to seek and to save that which was lost, He came to give hope to those who have no hope. 
 
 Many in the community know that our daughter was murdered several years ago. When it finally came to trial, both my wife and I had the opportunity to speak directly to the man who killed our daughter. When we spoke to him, each of us offered our forgiveness. I then added, “If you want to do anything to help us, then take this forgiveness as an opportunity to start your life over. One day you will stand before the judge of all the earth and give an account of your life, but it’s not too late, this is an opportunity to redeem your life.” 
 
 God is a Redeemer; he gives hope to the hopeless; He gives meaning and purpose to those who are lost. 
 
 A few years ago, I visited a prison in Texas where there is a program that takes inmates and trains them with the good news of the bible and makes them chaplains and pastors. They are then sent out to all the other prisons in Texas to redeem lives and transform other inmates by the power of God. 
 
We now have that same program here in Oregon, by the way. When I was in Texas, I had the opportunity to meet with some of the inmates that were being trained to be chaplains and I asked, “What has this meant to you personally?” They responded, “It means everything to us. We have hope, we have meaning and purpose in our lives.” 
 
 One of them told us his story, “My mother always blamed herself for the mess I made of my life,” he said, “when I graduated, they let my mom attend the ceremony. Afterward, I folded my cap and my gown and gave them to her. I then said, “Happy Mother’s Day…” 
 
 In Luke 15 there’s a story of a young man who messed up his life. That part of the story we can all relate to; but there’s much more; it’s not just a story about a young man who messed up his life, it’s a story about a father who sees his broken son walking toward home. He runs down the road toward his son. And with tears of joy welcomes him home. 
 
 Here’s the thing; it’s never too late to come home. It’s never too late to change your life. You’re not too young, you’re not too old. You’re going to have the opportunity today to change your life. 
 
My dad was an alcoholic. He abused my mother, then later divorced her, and by his own admission he was just an old wretched cuss. But at 75 years old he realized he had wasted most of his life. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at a service just like this. He came forward and gave his life to Christ and I baptized him with my own hands.

Moses is preparing Israel to cross the Jordan and enter the land of God’s promises. Moses himself cannot cross the Jordan and enter Canaan. He has one last speech, one last opportunity to prepare Israel. He wants it to go well with them, he wants them to understand that if they would listen and take God’s word into their hearts and walk according to those words that it would go well with them. 
They need the statutes and judgments, the wisdom of understanding, the principles of righteousness to guide their steps, so Moses reminds them of the significance of the Law. 
Many of them were not even alive when Israel received the law of God forty years earlier at Mount Sinai. They needed to be reminded; but more than that they needed to know that this was the way of greatest blessing. 
In this speech, Moses is seeking spiritual revival. He knows that Israel must have their hearts right before God. In fact, Moses calls on Israel to love God more than 10 times in the book of Deuteronomy alone. That is what revival is, to love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.

Here in these verses of chapter 15, Moses reminds them of the instructions of the Law that had to do with the Sabbath year. We know God gave Israel the Sabbath day, the seventh day of the week, as a day of rest and devotion to the Lord. But God also gave the Sabbath year. 
According to verse 1, at the end of every seven years they were to grant a release of debts. All debts were to be forgiven. As part of the forgiving of debts, however, they were to set free any slaves that were Hebrew kinsman. 
In those days and in that culture, if a person became severely indebted, they could sell themselves into servitude as a way of paying their debt. Therefore, the forgiveness of debt included setting free all those who had sold themselves into indebted slavery. 
The spiritual significance is profound. These verses speak prophetically about our relationship to Jesus Christ. He is our Sabbath and in Him we find forgiveness of sin, the payment of our debts, and are set free. 
However, Moses pointed out another interesting provision of the law. If the person who was being released from his debts and being set free said, “I will not go out from you,” because he loves you and your household, then that servant could become a

bondservant; a servant by choice and a servant for life because of his love. 
The apostle Paul called himself a bondservant also. These are profound lessons. 
I. Never Forget What God has Done for You 
➢ Verse 12 -- In the Sabbath year they were to forgive all debts and set free any Hebrew slaves among them as part of the forgiveness of that debt. 
➢ Not only should he be set free, however, he should be generously provided for so he could start a new life. 
➢ Verse 13- 14 -- “And when you set him free, you shall not send him away empty-handed. You shall furnish him liberally from your flocks and from your threshing floor.” 
➢ God is a God of new beginnings. He not only sets captives free; He sets their feet on a rock. 
➢ God wanted Israel to be generous, to bless abundantly because God had blessed them. In other words…

A. Bless because you have been blessed 
➢ Verse 14 -- “You shall give to him as the 
Lord your God has blessed you.” 
➢ Verse 15 then follows, “And you shall 
remember that you were once slaves in 
the land of Egypt and the Lord your God 
redeemed you.” 
➢ In other words, never forget where you 
came from. It keeps you always humble 
and always thankful. 
➢ God redeemed Israel from oppression and 
slavery. What did he free you from?

1. The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke are quite similar in content. 
2. Since we just completed a verse-by-verse study of Matthew’s Gospel, we will take a different approach to our study of Mark and Luke. 
3. First, the two Gospels will be harmonized in chronological order. 
4. Then, we will study only those sections not covered in Matthew’s Gospel account. 
5. Chronologically speaking, Luke’s starting point is earlier than that of Mark, so we will initially spend more time in Luke’s Gospel. 
6. In order to orient us to Luke and his Gospel account, some context is helpful. 
7. The Gospel of Luke was written between AD 58-60, likely before Acts; prior to the execution of the Apostle Paul by Nero and the fall of Jerusalem, which occurred in AD 70. 
8. Luke was a Gentile and therefore, the only Gentile author of a book in the New Testament. 
9. Luke was a physician, a man of science, who likely trained at a medical school in Rome. 
10. Luke was a disciple and companion of the Apostle Paul. 
11. It appears that the two met as Paul traveled through the Gentile cities, proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ. 
12. No doubt, Luke heard Paul speak about Jesus and became a born-again believer. 
13. According to Acts 16:10, Luke joined Paul during Paul’s second missionary journey as he traveled from Troas to Macedonia. 
a. How do we know that Luke joined Paul at that time? 
b. Because Luke changed the personal pronoun from “they” to “we” in his account of Paul’s travels. 
14. At some point, Luke decided to write an account of the life and ministry of Jesus Christ; which is the Gospel we have before us. 
15. Luke would then write an account of the early Church and how the Good News about Jesus Christ spread through the Roman Empire; the Book of Acts. 
16. Both books were written to a man named Theophilus. 
17. No one is certain about the exact identity of Theophilus, but it is interesting to note that his name means “friend of God” or “loved by God” or “one who loves God.” 
18. Many believe he was a Roman official because Luke referred to him as “most excellent Theophilus.” (3) 
19. What was Luke’s purpose in writing his Gospel account? 
a. To strengthen the faith of his struggling fellow Christian, Theophilus, by giving a detailed account of the life and work of Jesus Christ. 
b. To also reveal that Jesus is the Savior for Jews and Gentiles alike. (1-4) 
 
And that’s our focus tonight, that we may Believe and not Doubt our God and His heart for us. 
 
I. God Knows Our Story 
 
• God knows our strengths and weaknesses. 
• God knows our victories and defeats. 
 
A. God knows what’s written on every page (5-6) 
1. Even when it appears that God is not there; He is watching; mindful of our ways. 
2. Israel was living in troubled times. 
a. Herod the Great was their king. 
• Herod was a descendant of Esau; therefore, he was not a Jew. 
• The Roman Senate selected him because of Mark Antony’s recommendation. 
• Herod was known for his great accomplishments (i.e. mammoth buildings and victories in battle). 
• He was also known for his small stature; about 5’ in height. 
• Why did he build so many awe-inspiring structures? Because Herod wanted to make a great name for himself in history. 
• In fact, the words “the Great” were given to Herod by none other than Herod himself.

2. That is a great prayer request not just for a child but for any adult as well. 
3. But have you ever found yourself praying for God’s will while, at the same time, struggling with doubt?
3. Or, have you ever wondered what’s your part or responsibility when it comes to doing His will?
4. This evening, we’re going to look at an interesting passage from Luke’s Gospel and discover important principles about faith so that we may learn to Believe and Not Doubt God.

Moses is giving his final speech to Israel; he is preparing them to cross the Jordan and enter that fair land they had waited 40 years to enter. Moses cannot enter the promised land with them, so he wants them to have these final words. It’s an epic speech. 
 
 He wants it to go well for Israel in that land and so he gives them this admonition, “O Israel, you should listen and be careful to take these words into your heart and do them; live by them, that it may be well with you and that you multiply greatly as the Lord promised.” 
 
 Then Moses gave Israel the greatest words God has ever spoken, “Hear O Israel, the Lord Jehovah is our God, the Lord is one! And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. These words, which I giving you today, shall be on your heart and you shall teach them diligently to your sons and talk of them when you sit in your house and walk by the way.” 
 
 Then, when we come to chapter 8, Moses tells them again and again, “Never forget all that God is done.” 
 
 When you remember all that God has done for you, you are reminded that it was God who did it. It keeps you humble, it makes you thankful, it makes you appreciate God’s heart and God’s grace and God kindness. It brings you back to the love you had at the first. 
 
 But what if you do forget? If you forget all that God is done, you are no longer reminded that it was God who did it. You’re no longer humble, you’re no longer thankful, you no longer appreciate God’s heart and God’s grace and God’s kindness; because it wasn’t just the love that you had at the first that was so important, it was also the obedience you had at the first. 
 
 When you began this journey with God and you walked close to Him and your heart was thankful; you also clung to the principles of wisdom and understanding, the statutes and directives of God’s word for your life and you were blessed. His ways, his principles, his wisdom, his understanding, and his statutes guided you into the way of greatest blessing. 
 
 If you forget that it was God who gave you all those blessings, then you will also forget the love you had at the first and you will forget the principles and the Spirit that guided you. As a result, your heart will be lifted up and your proud heart will lead you to destruction. That’s why God says, “Never forget!” It’s the way of greatest blessing! 
 
I. Remember All the Ways God has Led You 
 
 Verse 2 - Moses instructed them that they should remember all the way, “Which the Lord your God has led you in the wilderness these 40 years.” 
 
 Remembering all the ways which God led them in the wilderness those 40 years would also strengthen their faith. 
 
 God has proven Himself to you; He has won you to Himself. He personally brought you out of Egypt with a mighty hand and made His power known to you. Never forget. 
 
Illus - When I think back on all that God has done for me personally, I’m very thankful. But not only am I thankful, I am reminded again of God’s great power and how He has loved me. And I know that God is not finished with me yet. “God, you have done great things in my life; do it again!” 
 
A. God will let you be hungry 
 
 Verse 2 -- “Remember all the way which the Lord your God has led you in the wilderness these 40 years, that He might humble you, testing you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not.” 
 Verse 3 -- “He humbled you and let you be hungry… and then fed you with manna.” Which was a miracle, by the way; a miraculous provision every single day for 40 years. 
 The wilderness was a time of testing for Israel; it was an opportunity to trust God, to look to Him to be their provision and help in time of need. 
 It was a test. God doesn’t just pour an overflowing abundance into your life. He let them be hungry. It was an opportunity for faith to be put into action.
