Psalm 138 describes those who live close to God as living in reality, and those who dwell far from Him as living in fantasy. Is that opposite to how you usually think of it? 
 
To assign the descriptor "reality" to that which cannot be seen, and "fantasy" to its opposite, is like turning the world upside-down. 
 
The average person may think of the world of religion as a bit of silly imagination. They might view their own perspective of logic and reason as the ultimate truth. 
 
I think I understand why this has come to be. In many ways, our spiritual beliefs in this post-modern era, sound like an episode of Star Wars or the TV show, Supernatural. We like the stories, maybe even wish they were true, but understand they are just a sham. Faith has been set up as a complex fiction, a pretend, make-believe world on which the naive and uneducated depend, in order to escape reality! 
 
Those of us who seek to align ourselves with spiritual truth believe all kinds of fantastical, non-earthly facts. We know there are angels and demons; we orient our lives toward ancient scripture; we await the fulfillment of foretold prophecy; we pray to, and worship an invisible force. Truly, we think that what is touchable is temporary and what is untouchable is eternal. Many would say that those of us who would call ourselves believers, are deluded by wishful thinking! 
 
What an impasse! From our perspective, the opposite is true! We are the ones who see the world as it really is! We are the ones in touch with reality, while denouncers live in their own fantasy of arrogant, egocentric atheism. 
 
There are many things which cannot be seen, much that cannot be known. At the heart of wisdom lies quiet humility. The lowly are regarded by God, whereas the haughty are far away. And in the end, the one thing which will outlast all others is love. 
 
O Lord, Your steady, faithful love endures for all time. Though many have forsaken You, do not forsake us, for we are the work of Your hands. 
 
If you, dear reader, have turned your heart from Him, can you stop, and call out his name now? He will hear and answer you, and you will find yourself living in the real world. You will find an increased strength of soul! You will be delivered by the strength of His love.

Of David. 
1 I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart; 
 before the gods I sing your praise; 
2 I bow down towards your holy temple 
 and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness; 
 for you have exalted your name and your word 
 above everything. 
3 On the day I called, you answered me, 
 you increased my strength of soul. 
4 All the kings of the earth shall praise you, O Lord, 
 for they have heard the words of your mouth. 
5 They shall sing of the ways of the Lord, 
 for great is the glory of the Lord.

Are you ever tempted to envy those who have more than you? Sometimes we look at rich people, and find ourselves idolizing their status, their wealth, or their power, but this is a dangerous trap! Many times their apparent blessings come with a terrible cost. David warns us from envying the wicked, comparing their momentary flash of fame and prosperity to the grass, which soon fades and withers. 
 
It comes from getting our priorities backwards. You see, the grass which grows in the ground is of this earth. Like everything on this earth, it is temporary, limited by time. But our eyes should be on eternal things. 
 
Many times I fool myself into thinking that the desires of my heart are earthly pleasures. Then, when I compare my state with those around me, I may feel jealousy or frustration that I don't have these things. 
 
But the real desires of my heart, those things deep within me, are exactly what I can find when I wait on God. When I am meek, and when I refrain from anger, then I will find fulfillment and enjoy the true pleasures of this earth. If I do not worry, but trust that God will act, then he will vindicate me, and cause my life to shine like the light of the sun. 
 
So do not focus on these evil people nor their apparent prosperity, but instead focus on God, and his rewards. When we take delight in Him, he will multiply our blessings and he will protect us, and promote us. 
 
Dear Lord, give us insight to see our heart as you do, courage to lay it in your hands, and faith to follow where you lead.

Exhortation to Patience and Trust 
Of David. 
1 Do not fret because of the wicked; 
 do not be envious of wrongdoers, 
2 for they will soon fade like the grass, 
 and wither like the green herb. 
3 Trust in the Lord, and do good; 
 so you will live in the land, and enjoy security. 
4 Take delight in the Lord, 
 and he will give you the desires of your heart. 
5 Commit your way to the Lord; 
 trust in him, and he will act. 
6 He will make your vindication shine like the light, 
 and the justice of your cause like the noonday. 
7 Be still before the Lord, and wait patiently for him; 
 do not fret over those who prosper in their way, 
 over those who carry out evil devices. 
8 Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath. 
 Do not fret—it leads only to evil. 
9 For the wicked shall be cut off, 
 but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land.

When I was a teenager, I once stole a chocolate cream-filled easter egg from my mother's secret stash. I noticed the sweet confection staring back at me one summer afternoon, and quickly snatched and consumed it. I can't recall for certain whether I enjoyed this sugary treat, but in my memory, it seems as if the taste was somehow soured. 
 
Here's why: a few days later, I completed some errands for mum. When I had finished, she smiled kindly at me, saying she had a little gift of appreciation. Opening the treat cupboard, she frowned, began moving things around, and then said, "I'm sorry, it's gone! I had an Easter Cream Egg I wanted to thank you with!" 
 
Holding my face in a plastic smile, I reassured her that I needed no such reward. Inside, however, my guts were in turmoil. I did not confess my theft, but instead struggled to erect a fragmented justification for my dishonesty. 
 
In Psalm 32, David tells us how he kept silent about his sin; not owning his wrongdoing, his deceit; not confessing his guilt to God. As a result, he felt as though the vitality of his very strength became withered and broken, "dried up as by the heat of summer." That's a vivid simile. I can imagine a desiccated carcass left in the desert sun; dehydrated flesh in an arid wasteland! 
 
I have many such stories, as I'm sure you do as well. Some may even be much more serious than stolen candy! I have experienced the very deliverance which David describes, when I have acknowledged my sin to God and man. Forgiveness is available to those who confess and turn from their sin. 
 
When we see that our torment is of our own making; once we come to realize that God's steadfast love is all around us; once we understand that joy and forgiveness is available to our lying hearts, then refusal to own up to our wrongdoings is simply stubborn ignorance. David compares such behaviour to a mule who must be controlled with a bit and bridle! 
 
Be happy, for your sins can be forgiven!

For it was fitting for him, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings. For indeed he who makes holy and those being made holy all have the same origin, and so he is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters, saying, “ I will proclaim your name to my brothers; in the midst of the assembly I will praise you .” Again he says, “I will be confident in him,” and again, “Here I am with the children God has given me .” Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, he likewise shared in their humanity, so that through death he could destroy the one who holds the power of death (that is, the devil), and set free those who were held in slavery all their lives by their fear of death. Therefore he had to be made like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he could become a merciful and faithful high priest in things relating to God, to make atonement for the sins of the people. For since he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.

Living in the Light 
 
5 This is the message we heard from Jesus[a] and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. 6 So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. 7 But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin. 
 
8 If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. 9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.

Living in the Light
