"Having an Attitude of Gratitude" 1 Chronicles 29:9-18

Sermon: 
A. Peter being led by the Spirit of God. 
1. The Spirit’s command to Peter: 
 a. Go with the people looking for you. 
 b. Doubt nothing. 
 c. Why? Trust Me. 
B. Peter in Caesarea. 
1. Peter, along with some fellow Jewish Christians (23) arrive at the home of 
 Cornelius in Caesarea. 
 a. Cornelius reveals some pagan influences in his life that were still relevant 
 to him. 
 1. He bowed at the feet of Peter and worshiped him. 
 2. Why? He assigned to Peter a divine status because the command to 
 summon Peter was given to him by a holy angel. 
 b. Peter quickly corrects Cornelius. 
C. Peter reveals how he sees himself and the attitude of a slave of Jesus Christ. 
1. He still saw himself as a Jew. 
 a. He did not clearly understand the implications of being a believer in Jesus 
 Christ. 
 b. He did not yet understand the scope of the death, burial, and 
 resurrection of Jesus Christ. 
 1. Jews and Gentiles have the same dead spiritual condition. 
 2. There is only one way for both to be transformed from their common 
 spiritual condition. 
 2. Peter was receptive to the leading of God’s Spirit, 
 a. Peter: Why am I here? 
 b. Cornelius: To tell us what God has commanded you to tell us.

Sermon:

Overcoming Cultural Identity In Our Pursuit Of Jesus Christ Acts 10:1-10 (7/3/16)

A. Cornelius, the Roman Centurion 
 1. He was devout in his convictions. 
 He was totally committed. 
 2. He feared God. 
 3. He was generous toward God and the people of God. 
 4. However, he was an uncircumcised Gentile. 
 a. He was not considered a Jewish proselyte. 
 b. Therefore, he was still an unclean Gentile in the mind of a Jew. 
 5. God saw in the heart of Cornelius a desire to know Him in an intimate and 
 personal way. 
 a. The challenge: How could that happen without first becoming a circumcised 
 Jewish proselyte? 
 b. Could Jesus possibly do in unclean Gentiles what He was doing in Jews; 
 without the Gentiles becoming purified through the ritual of becoming a 
 Jew first? 
B. Peter, God’s man through whom He would fulfill Cornelius’ desire of the heart. 
 1. Peter was a devout Jew. 
 2. Peter was a devout Christian. 
 a. Peter was conflicted in his devotion to his cultural identity and his faith in 
 Jesus Christ. 
 b. Challenge: To surrender Lordship to Jesus Christ even when it conflicted 
 with my cultural identity

"What Biblical Conversion Looks Like" (Acts 9:9-22)

Sermon: 
A. Simon the sorcerer 
1. He claimed to be a man of great power. 
 a. He had great authority among the people. 
 b. The people considered him to be a possessor of the power of God. 
 Why? Because of the power he appeared to have. (Ref. 2 Cor. 11: 12-14 
 
2. The truth of God’s word exposed the falseness of Simon’s power. 
 a. The people believed the Word of God. 
 b. Simon believed; but his belief was rooted in the display of God’s power 
 in the life of Philip. 
 1. Simon saw a power greater than he possessed. 
 2. He desired to have that power in order to increase his stature among the 
 people. 
B. Simon exposed. 
1. Peter and John in Samaria 
 Why? Transitional period in the life of the church. 
2. Through prayer and the laying of hands by the apostles on the people, they 
 received the Holy Spirit just as the Jews had in Jerusalem. 
3. Simon impressed with what he saw, offered money for what can only be 
 received as a gift. 
 a. The apostles were glorifying the Lord Jesus Christ in their use of God’s 
 power. 
 b. Simon wanted the power so that he might get some glory for himself. 
 1. Simon had a heart problem. 
 a. He was not grateful for what the Lord had done for Him. 
 b. He wanted the Lord’s power for his glory. 
 2. The result: His hardened heart would not allow him to repent for 
 desiring God’s power for his own glory. 
Unfortunately, the spirit of Simon is alive and well in the church today. Many seek to be what God has never called them to be and will use whatever means they have in order to get glory for themselves. (Ref. Isa. 42:8)
