I. THE BIBLICAL DOCTRINE OF PRAYER (Luke 11:1) 
 
A. Defining Prayer 
 
1. Its definition—Simply stated, prayer is talking to God. 
a. Prayer can involve the making of requests (Philippians 1:4; Philippians 4:6). 
b. Prayer can and should involve the praise of God (Matthew 6:9). 
2. Its method—If the Bible dictates anything in regards to the methodology of our prayer life it is that we ought to do so with uplifted hands (1 Kings 8:54; Psalm 141:2; 1 Timothy 2:8). 
3. Its doctrine—Scripturally speaking, we pray to God the Father in the name of the Son (John 15:16) with the Spirit of God making intercession on our behalf (Romans 8:26). 
 
B. Demonstrating Prayer 
 
1. For whom should we pray (1 Timothy 2:1)? 
2. Where should we pray (1 Timothy 2:8)? 
3. When should we pray (1 Thessalonians 5:17)? 
 
II. THE BIBLICAL DEVELOPMENT OF PRAYER 
 
A. It Parted the Red Sea (Exodus 14:10-31) 
 
1. Israel was caught between the Egyptians and the Red Sea (Exodus 14:10-14). 
2. Moses cried out to the LORD (Exodus 14:15). 
3. The LORD parted the Red Sea for Israel to cross on dry ground (Exodus 14:21-22). 
4. God troubled Egypt and took the wheels of their chariots (Exodus 14:23-25). 
5. The LORD brought the waters back down drowning the Egyptians (Exodus 14:26-28). 
 
B. It Conquered a Barren Womb (1 Samuel 1:2, 5-6, 9-20, 27) 
 
1. Hannah’s womb had been shut and she was mocked (1 Samuel 1:5-6). 
2. Hannah took her fretting to the LORD and begged a son (1 Samuel 1:9-11). 
3. The LORD granted her request (1 Samuel 1:19-20, 27). 
 
C. It Devastated a Formidable Army (2 Kings 19:1-37) 
 
1. Rabshakeh sent a threatening letter to Hezekiah suggesting Judah was soon to perish (2 Kings 19:8-14). 
2. Hezekiah took the letter to the temple and prayed over it (2 Kings 19:14-19). 
3. The angel of the LORD smote 185,000 Assyrians in the night (2 Kings 19:35). 
4. The king of the Assyrians was killed by his sons (2 Kings 19:36-37). 
 
D. It Deprived Opportunistic Lions (Daniel 6:1-24) 
 
1. Darius was deceived into making a foolish decree against prayer (Daniel 6:1-9). 
2. Daniel, knowing the decree was signed, continued his practice of praying three times a day (Daniel 6:10). 
3. Daniel was found and cast into a den of lions (Daniel 6:11, 16-17, see vs. 24). 
4. The king spent the night fasting (and praying?) and Daniel survived (Daniel 6:18-23). 
 
E. It Caused a Man to Survive the Fish’s Belly (Jonah 1:11-17; Jonah 2:1-10) 
 
1. Jonah was cast into the sea because of disobedience to God (Jonah 1:11-16). 
2. The LORD prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah (Jonah 1:17). 
3. Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights (Jonah 1:17). 
4. Then Jonah prayed (Jonah 2:1). 
5. The LORD spake unto the fish and it vomited Jonah upon the dry land (Jonah 2:10). 
 
III. THE BIBLICAL DIRECTIVE OF PRAYER 
 
A. The Heart of Prayer 
 
1. We should pray in faith believing (Hebrews 11:6; James 1:6-7). 
2. We should be sincere in heart (Jeremiah 29:13). 
3. We should pray in accordance with God’s will (1 John 5:14). 
 
B. The Frequency of Prayer 
 
1. “These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication” (Acts 1:14) 
2. “And they continued stedfastly…in prayers.” (Acts 2:42) 
3. “But we will give ourselves continually to prayer,” (Acts 6:4) 
4. “For God is my witness…that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;” (Romans 1:9) 
5. “Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;” (Romans 12:12) 
6. “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit,” (Ephesians 6:18) 
7. “Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy,” (Philippians 1:4) 
8. “We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you,” (Colossians 1:3)

II. AN UNDERSTANDING OF LIBERTY 
 
A. The Appearance of Liberty 
 
1. The word liberty is found twenty-seven times in the Bible. Nine of these uses are found in the Old Testament and eighteen uses are found in the New Testament. 
2. Two types of liberty are mentioned in scripture: 
a. Physical 
b. Spiritual 
3. The greater portion of the uses are in reference to physical liberty. 
 
B. The Definition of Liberty 
 
1. Simply put, the word liberty means deliverance. The easiest way to prove this from scripture is to compare Isaiah 61:1 with Luke 4:18. 
2. This definition is confirmed by the word’s contrast with bondage (Romans 8:21; Galatians 2:4; Galatians 5:1; 2 Peter 2:19). 
3. Liberty is connected to the freedom of choice (1 Corinthians 7:39). 
4. Contrary to popular belief, liberty is not: 
a. The absence of rules or law (Psalm 119:45; James 1:25; James 2:12) 
b. An occasion to the flesh (Galatians 5:13) 
c. The absence of servitude (Galatians 5:13; 1 Peter 2:16) 
d. An allowance to be a stumblingblock to the weak (1 Corinthians 8:9) 
 
III. THE ASPECTS OF LIBERTY 
 
A. Positional Liberty 
 
1. There is one aspect of liberty in which we have already been delivered. This would be as a result of our position in Christ. 
2. The Bible alludes to this liberty in Galatians 5:1 where it testifies of “the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free.” 
3. The Bible confirms this truth when it says that we have already been made free from or delivered from: 
a. Sin (Romans 6:18, 22) 
b. The law (Romans 7:6) 
c. The law of sin and death (Romans 8:2) 
d. The power of darkness (Colossians 1:13) 
 
B. Practical Liberty 
 
1. While we have liberty in Christ that cannot be taken from us, there is a practical liberty that we must exercise on a daily basis or it will be lost. 
2. This liberty is both set forth and explained in Galatians 5. 
a. The importance of liberty (Galatians 5:1-6) 
1.) The danger of liberty (Galatians 5:1) 
2.) The replacement of liberty (Galatians 5:2-4) 
3.) The facilitators of liberty (Galatians 5:5-6)

A. The Subtitle 
 
1. The recipient of the psalm—“To the chief Musician” 
2. The beneficiary of the psalm—“for the sons of Korah”

1. The commands—This psalm contains three commands all of which point to the worship of God. 
a. Clap 
b. Shout

2. The cause—The remainder of the psalm is focused upon the explanation of why God is to be praised. Certainly the explanation is not all-encompassing, but was specific in order to convey an intended message. 
 
II. THE GREAT INHERITANCE (Psalm 47:1-5) 
 
A. The Call to Praise (Psalm 47:1) 
 
1. The practice of praise 
a. O clap your hands 
(1) Various forms of the word clap (clap, clapped, clappeth) are found nine times in nine verses of scripture. 
(2) Each time it is an action done with the hands. 
(3) To clap one’s hands means to smite them together, and was most frequently an expression of praise, joy, or approval. This could also be done in a sense of mockery. 
b. Shout…with the voice 
(1) Various forms of the word shout (shout, shouting, shouted, shouteth, shoutings) appear sixty-seven times in fifty-three verses. 
(2) The word is intended to demonstrate the manner in which one speaks. It is often not intended to be an insubstantial cry, but the manner in which words and phrases are spoken. 
c. Note: While neither of these are set forth as practices of worship in the church, if they were done in the spirit in which they were prescribed in the Old Testament they would not be deemed sinful. 
2. The persuasion of praise—“with the voice of triumph” 
3. The participants of praise 
a. The giver of praise—“all ye people” 
b. The recipient of praise—“unto God” 
 
B. The Cause for Praise (Psalm 47:2) 
 
1. The person—“the LORD” 
2. The prestige 
a. Most high 
b. A great King over all the earth 
3. The persuasion—“the LORD most high is terrible”; Although the word terrible has been much modified in its present use, the simplistic meaning suggests someone or something that is able to bring terror. God is associated with this term on numerous occasions (Deuteronomy 7:21; Deuteronomy 10:17; Nehemiah 1:5; Nehemiah 4:14; Nehemiah 9:32). 
 
C. The Conditions of Praise (Psalm 47:3-5) 
 
1. Israel’s exaltation (Psalm 47:3-4) 
a. The subduing of the people (Psalm 47:3; Isaiah 49:22-23) 
(1) He shall subdue the people under us. 
(2) He shall subdue the nations under our feet. 
(3) Note: While some of these truths could have been partially fulfilled in times past, the ultimate fulfillment will not come until the millennial kingdom. 
b. The inheritance of the people (Psalm 47:4) 
(1) The personalization of the inheritance 
a) He shall choose our inheritance for us. 
b) He shall choose…the excellency of Jacob. 
(2) The preference of the inheritance—“whom he loved” 
(3) The ponderings of the inheritance—“Selah.” 
2. God’s exaltation (Psalm 47:5; see 2 Samuel 6:15; 1 Chronicles 15:28) 
a. God is gone up with a shout. 
b. The LORD is gone up with the sound of a trumpet. 
c. Note: The wording associates this with the ark of the covenant’s ascension to its proper place in Jerusalem. The ark represented God’s presence and Jerusalem was its intended place. In like manner, Christ will ascend to His throne in the rightful place of Jerusalem. 
 
III. THE GREAT VICTOR (Psalm 47:6-9) 
 
A. The Call to Praise (Psalm 47:6-7) 
 
1. The practice of praise (Psalm 47:6-7) 
a. Sing praises x 4 (Psalm 47:6) 
b. Sing ye praises (Psalm 47:7) 
2. The persuasion of praise—“with understanding” (Psalm 47:7) 
3. The participants of praise (Psalm 47:6-7) 
a. The giver of praise (Psalm 47:6-7)

2. God’s exaltation 
a. The shields of the earth belong unto God. Note: The point is that all kingdoms will come under Christ (Revelation 11:15). 
b. He is greatly exalted.

The Rise and Fall of Uzziah 
2 Chronicles 26:1-23; 2 Kings 15:1-7 
 
I. THE BEGINNING OF UZZIAH’S REIGN (2 Chronicles 26:1-4; 2 Kings 15:1-4) 
 
A. The Details of the Reign (2 Chronicles 26:1, 3; 2 Kings 15:1-2) 
 
1. He began his reign in the twenty-seventh year of Jeroboam, king of Israel (2 Kings 15:1). 
2. He began to reign when he was sixteen years old (2 Chronicles 26:1, 3; 2 Kings 15:2). 
3. He reigned for fifty-two years in Jerusalem (2 Chronicles 26:3; 2 Kings 15:2). 
4. His mother’s name was Jecoliah or Jecholiah (2 Chronicles 26:3; 2 Kings 15:2). 
 
B. The Character of His Reign (2 Chronicles 26:4; 2 Kings 15:3-4) 
 
1. He did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father Amaziah did (2 Chronicles 26:4; 2 Kings 15:3). 
2. However, he failed to remove the high places where the people sacrificed and burnt incense (2 Kings 15:4). 
 
C. His First Order of Business (2 Chronicles 26:2; 2 Kings 14:22) 
 
1. He built Eloth (Elath), and restored it to Judah. 
2. He did so after the king (Amaziah) slept with his fathers. 
 
II. UZZIAH’S PROSPERITY (2 Chronicles 26:5-15) 
 
A. The Reason for His Prosperity (2 Chronicles 26:5) 
 
1. He sought God in the days of Zechariah. 
2. As long as he sought the Lord, God made him to prosper (Psalm 34:10). 
 
B. The Areas of His Prosperity (2 Chronicles 26:6-15) 
 
1. He was prosperous in battle (2 Chronicles 26:6-7). 
2. He was prosperous in foreign relations (2 Chronicles 26:8). 
3. He was prosperous in national security (2 Chronicles 26:9-15). 
 
C. The Result of His Prosperity (2 Chronicles 26:15) 
 
1. His name spread far abroad. 
2. He was marvellously helped. 
3. He was strong. 
 
III. UZZIAH’S FALL (2 Chronicles 26:16-20; 2 Kings 15:5) 
 
A. The Reason for His Fall (2 Chronicles 26:16) 
 
1. He was strong. Note: We are often more vulnerable in times of strength. 
2. His heart was lifted up to his destruction. 
 
B. The Transgression of Uzziah (2 Chronicles 26:16-20) 
 
1. He went into the temple to burn incense (2 Chronicles 26:16). 
2. Azariah and eighty other priests went in after Uzziah (2 Chronicles 26:17). 
3. The priests withstood Uzziah (2 Chronicles 26:18). 
a. They told him that the burning of incense did not appertain to him. 
b. They told him incense should only be burnt by the consecrated sons of Aaron. 
c. They told him to leave the sanctuary. 
d. They warned him of the judgment of God. 
1) He had trespassed. 
2) It would not be for his honour from the LORD God. 
4. The Lord smote Uzziah with leprosy (2 Chronicles 26:19-20). 
a. Uzziah was wroth with the priests (2 Chronicles 26:19). 
b. Leprosy rose up in his forehead before the priests (2 Chronicles 26:19). 
c. The priests thrust him out of the sanctuary (2 Chronicles 26:20). 
d. Uzziah hasted to go out, knowing he was smitten of the Lord (2 Chronicles 26:20; 2 Kings 15:5). 
 
IV. THE END OF UZZIAH’S REIGN (2 Chronicles 26:21-23; 2 Kings 15:5-7) 
 
A. His Last Days (2 Chronicles 26:21; 2 Kings 15:5) 
 
1. He was a leper unto the day of his death. 
2. He dwelt in a several house. 
3. He was cut off from the house of the Lord. 
4. Jotham, his son, was over the king’s house and judged the people. 
 
B. The Rest of His Acts (2 Chronicles 26:22; 2 Kings 15:6) 
 
1. Some found in 2 Kings 15 
2. Some found in 2 Chronicles 26 
3. Some found in Isaiah 1-6 
 
C. His Death (2 Chronicles 26:23; 2 Kings 15:7) 
 
1. Uzziah slept with his fathers. 
2. They buried him in the field of the burial which belonged to the kings. 
3. He was remembered as being a leper. 
4. Jotham, his son, reigned in his stead.
