Those are all the things that are the acts and works of the flesh, and the spirit wants us to realize that. Now back to Colossians again. So this is what we were all capable of whether we actually did it or not is moot, we were capable of it.

"And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled."

Now before we go into the next verse that shows how He is also the glue that holds the whole universe together, I always like to show all the verses that pertain to His Creatorship. And of course, I'm going to take you back to John's Gospel for a moment. John's Gospel chapter 1, verse 1. Philippians 2:10a 
 
"That at the name of Jesus every knee (from Adam to the last human being ever born) should bow, of things in heaven,..." 
 
 
Even the angelic. Yes the angels bow to Him because they're beneath Him. In fact let's look at a Scripture in Hebrews. While in Minnesota the other day I taught a study in the Book of Hebrews, and a lot of those things are still on my mind. Let's look at Hebrews chapter 1 for a moment. And if one has been swayed to worship angels, then I'm sure there many, many others, and maybe someone can hear this, and be brought to their senses. 
 
 
Hebrews 1:7

They shall perish; but thou remainest: (because He's from everlasting to everlasting) and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; 12. And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, (the Creator will, and recreate) and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail. (now verse 13) But to which of the angels said he (God) at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?"

Philippians 2:6 
 
"Who, (speaking of Christ in verse 5) being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:" 
 
 
Now we always have to remember and especially when we get into these succeeding verses never lose sight of who Jesus Christ was, and is, and always will be. He is the Eternal, Sovereign, Creator God of the universe, and nothing less. I know there are a lot of groups that have trouble with that, but He was God in the flesh. Consequently He did not feel that when He claimed to be God that He was grasping for something that was not rightfully His. And that's what it means here then when Paul said. "...He thought it not robbery to be equal with God." Because He was God. He could rightfully claim to be God. Now verse 7. 
 
 
Philippians 2:7 
 
"But (as the Eternal, Holy, Righteous, Omniscient, Sovereign God) made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:"

Philippians 1:28a 
 
"And in nothing terrified by your adversaries which is to them (the adversaries) an evident token of perdition,..." 
 
 
Do you know what that means? We read these things but we don't really stop to think on them. It's those who oppose the believers. Those who have brought persecution on the believers over the centuries have simply set their nose with flint to their eternal doom. And that's not going to change. Anyone who opposes the Gospel, anyone who brings persecution on the believer, short of his own salvation of course, are headed for any eternal doom, now that's what perdition means. So that's what Paul is saying, "For those who persecute believers and bring pressures on us, are headed for their own perdition, their own doom." 
 
 
But it's also an evidence of our own salvation, when they bring persecution on us. You had better be careful if everybody has nothing but good to say about you. Because the unbelieving world really shouldn't be able to complement us much because they don't like who we are and what we stand for. So Paul makes it so plain to these Philippians that when the pressures from the outside world, whether it was the Judaisers or the Pagans or the Romans

Now here again you've got to be a Bible student. What is "the day of Christ?" That's only a Pauline term, and you won't find it any where else in Scripture. "The day of Christ" will be the day that the Rapture takes place and removes the Body of Christ from the earth. Everything beginning at Paul's conversion experience and the building of the Body of Christ, which is also a term used only by him, is waiting for the day when the Rapture of Church will take place. The dead in Christ will be raised first Paul says in I Corinthians chapter 15 and I Thessalonians chapter 4, and then we believers who remain and are alive will be caught up to meet the Lord in the air. Now that's "the day of Christ!" Remember everything written to the Church is written in that parenthetical unknown period of time. (Church Age) And it is leading up to "the day of Christ," which will end the Church Age.

Now let's go all the way back and pick it up in the Old Testament first and that will be in Isaiah chapter 52:7. This is a verse that most of you are aware of, but I always like to show that the Old and New fit so beautifully in so many ways, and here's another one.

I made the comment in our seminar in Pennsylvania recently, that the primary purpose of this Book from cover to cover is that one word "Salvation." The main purpose of the Word of God is to bring lost people to a knowledge of salvation. Remember God's not willing that any should perish! And if they're not to perish, then they need to get the remedy from the Word of God. And as I've said so often, that remedy can only be found for the Church Age believers in Paul's Gospel as we see in I Corinthians 15:1-4 which is faith + Nothing in the finished work of the cross. So whether it's Old Testament or the New Testament, salvation is the main purpose for mankind to have the Bible.

Ephesians 6:15

"And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;"

Now you have no idea how many letters and phone calls I get, that ask, "Is it Scriptural that we are to bind Satan?" Personally I've never heard it, and it sure isn't in this Book. There is no way that we humans can bind Satan. Satan is a spirit being, and God in the power of an angel will one day, as we see in Revelation chapter 19, bind him and put him in the pit for a thousand years. But there is no way that we can bind Satan today, nor are we instructed to. I pointed out to one individual that the instruction as we see right here is to resist him, to oppose him, but there's no way we're going to bind him. Look at verse 11 again.

Which of course was the bedrock of the Law. Now that's where we stopped in the last lesson, and we're going to stay stopped for a bit, because I'm still not quite through with what I wanted to get across so far as, "why does Paul define this dispensation of the Grace of God?" Now always remember every word that Paul writes, as well as every word that the Old Testament writers write, was inspired by the Holy Spirit. None of these writings was just the will of a person. Even when Paul in so many words says, "this is my idea" it's still inspired, and never lose sight of that. Every word is here because the Holy Spirit wants it here. So when Paul says in Romans. 
 
 
Romans 11:13a 
 
"For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles,..."

Acts 17:10-11

"Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. (do you see the danger? Most of us have just been inundated with tradition. Some tradition is OK, but you've got to line it up with the Word of God, to see if it fits.) 9. For in him (Christ) dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily." 
 
 
Now that blows a lot of people's minds. Who is the Godhead? God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Now that's the Godhead, but Christ is the epitome of it as He settled down in the Godhead bodily. With that resurrected body that He left with at the Mount of Olives, and ascended into glory. Another verse just comes to mind in Isaiah. We almost looked at it in one of the 3 lessons we had earlier today, but we ran out of time before we could use it. That's the way I teach, as these Scriptures come flying through then I feel we have to stop and look at them. Now here again, this is the Christ that died for us, this is the Christ that keeps us today, this is the Christ that is coming again, and we trust real soon. This fits so beautifully with these verses in Ephesians. This is the Christ in Whom we dwell. Now verse 6, and remember this is the prophet writing to the Nation of Israel, so the pronoun "us" of course is to the nation. 
 
Isaiah 9:6-7 
 
"For unto us (Israel) a child is born, unto us (Israel) a son is given: and the government (this 1000 year rule and reign when He will be King of Kings and Lord of Lords, and we feel we're getting closer all the time. I mean we're getting close!) shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." So Who do you have intertwined in this one verse? God the Father, and God the Son.

Galatians 1:11-12 
 
"But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me (now be careful how you read this. When Paul says "The Gospel which was preached of me," he's referring to the Pauline message of I Corinthians 15:1-4, and that message ) is not after man. 12. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, (by other men) but by the revelation of Jesus Christ." 
 
 
Well what's Paul saying? At his conversion on the road to Damascus when the Lord spoke to him and said, "I'm going to send you far hence to the Gentiles" Paul didn't immediately head back to Jerusalem and check in with Peter and the eleven. But instead the Lord sends him in the opposite direction down to Mount Sinai in Arabia, and evidently for three years the Lord just laid on this man the whole revelation of all of these things that were never hinted at in Scripture before. And this is what I try to emphasize to people, do you realize that all the way up through the Old Testament, all the way up through the Four Gospels, and the early chapter of Acts, that you never once see the term "The Body of Christ?" You don't see that term until you get to Paul. 
 
 
Now once Paul begins his ministry never does he use the term, "The Gospel of the Kingdom as Jesus and the Twelve did." Why? Because that gospel was associated with the Twelve. Just as they couldn't use the term the Body of Christ, Paul can't use the term the Gospel of the Kingdom. Do you see that? As I showed you before there is this fork in the road in the Bible, and that fork starts with the apostle Paul at his conversion on the road to Damascus. God comes up to the point where Israel rejected everything of the Covenant promises, and when that happened God says, "I'll do something totally different." So with the apostle Paul, He went to the Gentile. Now Paul lays this out so beautifully here in these verses. We've covered them lots of times on the program, and I know this is repetition to a lot of you. 
 
 
Galatians 1:13a

"And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite: 35. Which were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah." 
 
 
So this sexual immorality is one of the first things that Paul mentions, and it isn't just here, in some of his other classification of human sins, the sexual things are almost always number one. Now let's go into the next area because verse 19 for the most part is dealing with sexual sins of adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, but now look at verse 20. 
 
 
Galatians 5:20 
 
"Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies," 
 
 
Now all of those can be lumped together when you get into the area of idolatry or pagan worship. Now let's go back to the Book of Jeremiah Chapter 44 as this is one example that I can turn to quite quickly, and I think you'll appreciate what I'm trying to show you. This too has been plaguing the human race ever since the Tower of Babel at least, and that is that bent to worship a false god. It's just about automatic in the human nature to want to follow that drawing power to worship a false god, idols of one sort or another. Even the Nation of Israel, who had the proof of the living God all the way back from their beginning, and they should have known better, but here they would follow after these pagans and you remember that was the controversy that Elijah had with King Ahab upon Mount Caramel with all the prophets of Baal, because Israel had also been following Baal. But here in Jeremiah it lays it out so plain. and distinctly as what the results are going to be if a people or a nation are going to go into the worship of false idol gods. Here in Jeremiah the Israelites are speaking back and say - 
 
 
Jeremiah 44:18 
 
"But since we left off to burn incense to the queen of heaven, (that was one of the pagan goddesses) and to pour out drink offerings unto her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine."

Galatians 5:17-18 
 
"For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary the one with the other, so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. 18. But if ye be led of the Spirit ye are not under the law." 
 
 
Now let's show this from Scripture. First and foremost we cannot do the things that we would do, let's not find ourselves beating our breast and saying, "Oh, I'm without hope, I can't seem to win," because the apostle Paul went through that same thing. Now let's look at his dilemma in Romans Chapter 7 first, and maybe that will give us some comfort. You see we're not alone when we know we should do something and we just don't do it. We know we shouldn't do certain things, but the first thing we know, we've done it. All right in Romans Chapter 7 let's just drop down to verse 15. I mean this just says it all. 
 
 
Romans 7:15a 
 
"For that which I do I allow not:..." 
 
 
Well what does he mean? Well that's what Paul is doing in the body and flesh, this new nature prompted by the Holy Spirit tells him that it's wrong. Do you see that? So he says, "the things that I do I know better. I don't want to do them. Now move on in the verse. 
 
 
Romans 7:15b 
 
"...for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I."

II Corinthians 12:8,9a 
 
"For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, (three times) that it (this thorn in the flesh) might depart from me. 9. And he (the Lord Jesus Himself) said unto me, `My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect (or complete) in weakness....'" 
 
 
Again I have to take us back to I Corinthians because this is the whole concept of Christian service. I don't mind a bit when, once in a while, someone will say to me, "Les, the Lord is blessing your ministry so don't get the big head." Because that's always a danger in any ministry, and don't think we don't know that. The moment we think that we can do it ourselves we're all done. It has to be done as a weak vessel that God has seen fit to use. 
 
 
I Corinthians 1:26 
 
"For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:" 
 
 
Now that says it all doesn't it? God doesn't go to the kings and queens of world, nor does he usually go to the ivy covered halls of universities for his servants. He never has. All you have to do is go back into the Old Testament economy and look. Don't think for a moment that there weren't more highly polished people to be used than Amos, Gideon, and Ezekiel and some of these people. They were just common ordinary members of the Jewish nation, but that's what God saw fit to use. So Paul is really an exception to the rule. Paul was highly educated and no doubt had a lot of polish because he certainly moved in the upper echelons of Judaism. This is why he constantly puts himself down as nothing, because he realizes that God cannot use somebody unless they are nothing. 
 
 
Do you know the prime example for that situation in Scripture is Moses. Do you remember back there in Exodus. Moses, at the end of his first 40 years, having lived in Pharaoh's palace (and was the second top man in Egypt), what did he think he could do? Well, he thought he could take the children of Israel out of slavery because of his own power and pomp and circumstance, wisdom, and leadership, so he went out to the children of Israel and as the Book of Acts says: 
 
 
Acts 7:25 
 
"For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not."
