• You always begin your books with upholding biblical authority and looking at how the text are not written to us but are for us. As we have discussed in previous episodes, we need to read the account of the flood as an ancient document. Please Remind us of what this is important. 
• In Prop 2 you say that the flood was a real event in a real past. What do you mean by this? 
• Next in props 3-4 you speak about the use of hyperbole in the account of the flood. We covered the “conquest” in our last episode. You talk about how Joshua 1-12 and Joshua 13-24 contradict when taken “literally”, but that they present an important theological point… talk about this and how the Bible uses hyperbole to describe historical events and what this means for the hyperbolic account of the flood. 
• In prop 6 you specifically at Genesis 6-9 dealing with the local flood vs. global flood debate. Outline the arguments for these. 
• At the end of prop 6 you state: “The Bible describes a worldwide flood, yet absolutely no geological evidence supports a worldwide flood. While some people believe that this means that science must be wrong if the Bible is right, we believe that if science is right, then it leads us to a better interpretation of the biblical material, the interpretation that gets us to the original intent of the biblical author.” …. we will get to the scientific side of this later, but this points to the fact that we need to examine the text in their context for better interpretations. Part 2 (props 7-8) examine the ANE background for the flood, and part 3 walks us through the literary and theological context of the flood. Please walk us through the ANE context first before we dive into the rest. 
• Prop 9 is titled “A Local Cataclysmic Flood Is Intentionally Described as a Global Flood for Rhetorical Purposes and Theological Reasons”. Please explain this. (Maybe also get into the traditional vs. order and disorder perspectives here) 
• I had a pastor friend asked me a question recently. He is talking with someone what has a very retributive view of God and refers to the flood as proof that God being angry, violent, and retributive. This is also a major objection by atheists to Christianity too. Also, many say point to the fact that this is not a kids story (we tell them the part about the ark and the animals but not the people that drowned). How do we respond to this and how does proper context deal with these objections and God’s character? 
• You show how Genesis 1-11 is a literary unit. How does all of this work together and set up the covenant?

• Prop 17 is “Science Can Purify Our Religion; Religion Can Purify Science from Idolatry and False Absolutes”. This is an important chapter. Many Christians have become anti-science, thinking it disagrees with scripture, and many have also walked away from faith due to science, thinking it disproves scripture. Talk to us a little about this chapter and how science and scripture can work together. 
• What would you like people to take away from this book and how can it be applied today?

Bio: Dr. Peppiatt has been Principal at Westminster Theological Centre (WTC) since 2013. She teaches courses in Christian doctrine and in spiritual formation. Lucy holds bachelor’s degrees in both English and Theology, and completed an MA in Systematic Theology at King’s College, London, and a PhD through the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand. What would your journey like in writing this book and your political journey? 
 
What is this book about and what do you hope people will take away from it? 
 
Before we dive into some of the content and exegesis of the book, could you explain some of the terms you use such as Empire and Babylon? And do you see these as paradigms? (People will often claim that America is not an empire or is not like Babylon as a democracy to a constitutional republic) 
 
Let’s dive into some of the OT context of your book. Tell us about Israel in the OT and how they were supposed to be an upside down kingdom of priests 
 
Chapter 3 really gets into the concept of exile and Babylon and how were the Jews called to respond to Babylon in exile? 
 
Chapters 4 and 5 are all about Jesus and how his kingdom is not like this world’s kingdom. Walk us through how Jesus subverts the Empire with his kingdom? 
 
Throughout the NT the proclamation of the Gospel is politically subversive. Speak a little to this then and how should it be this way today as well 
 
We know Exile was definitely a OT and Israel thing but where do we find this concept of being exiles in the NT for the church. Also, I find when people read exile language in the NT they just see it as spiritual (This world is not my home, I’m just passing through- going to heaven) rather than about citizenship now. 
 
The book of Revelation maybe one of the most politically subversive books in the NT but many modern evangelical readers do not interpret it that way. But scholars such as yourself, Scot McKnight, and Michael Gorman are bring out the political nature of the letter. Walk us through some of the themes in Revelation and how this applies to living as exiles 
 
You begin the book with: “Going to church should be a subversive political act”. Speak a little to the three approaches you bring up in the book Separatism, transformation, and prophetic witness. How should the church be the church in the world, especially politically? (Eklessia) 
 
So let’s get to the practical part of this book in Chapter 10 where you look at what it might look like to live as an exile today, as a prophetic witness. What about:

 • Political parties 
 • Immigration 
 • Pledging allegiance to the flag

J. Richard Middleton is Professor of Biblical Worldview and Exegesis at Northeastern Seminary and Roberts Wesleyan University in Rochester, NY. 
He has been President of the Canadian-American Theological Association (2011–2014) and President of the Canadian Society of Biblical Studies (2019–2021). Middleton has a Ph.D. from the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, in a joint-degree program with the Institute for Christian Studies, Toronto. 
His most recent book is Abraham’s Silence: The Binding of Isaac, the Suffering of Job, and How to Talk Back to God (Baker Academic, 2021). 
 
 
CONVERSATION QUESTIONS 
 
First, tell us a little about yourself and your background in christianity and scholarship. What got you interested in the subject of the binding of Isaac? 
 
You begin the book with a section on vigorous models of prayer in the Bible. Could you begin talking about Exodus 32 and the story of Moses’ intercession and what we can learn about the way God wants us to speak and pray to Him? 
 
Next, you get into the book of Job and ask the question about appropriate speech towards God. What is Job all about and how does this story inform us about interaction and speech with God? 
 
When we get to the Binding of Isaac it seems like a crazy story for God to ask someone to sacrifice their son. I’ve seen many internet atheists go to town questioning God’s character and the God of the Bible based on this story. Also It has caused many well meaning christians (me included) to ask questions about God’s character and the request to be unjust or wrong. What are some of the ways this story has been interpreted and what are some of the problems that you see with certain interpretations of this story? 
 
So you take a literary approach to the text and look at how the story of the binding of Isaac connects to other stories in the Bible and how it connects to the immediate context. Walk us through the Aqedah from your point of view. 
 
Things you can possibly touch on here: 
• Sodom and Gomorrah 
• Elohim vs. Yahweh in Gen 22 
• Ishmael and Abraham- Only son you love? 
• The Lord will provide (freudian slip) 
• The angel’s 2 speeches 
• The aftermath with Isaac, Sarah, and Hagar. What did this even teach the next generations? (Fear of Isaac) 
 
Many see Abraham as a father of faith and yet in the way you explain the story it seem as though Abraham failed the test because he did not discern the character of God and his mercy. Can Abraham still be the “Father of Faith” as the NT often describes him? 
 
Probably someone who would object to your interpretation would bring up the epistle of James where he seems to praise Abraham for not withholding His son? How do you respond to that in keeping with your interpretation? 
 
What would you like the church to learn and do based on your book about prayer, lament (talking back to God), and God’s character?

While most books on the cross or atonement try to “sum up” or find a specific mechanism for the cross but in this book you go the route of mystery and contemplation through beauty and poetics, while also being exegetical and theological. Please explain why you wrote this book? Also, explain the title “The Wood Between the Worlds”. 
 
In chapter 2 you talk about the singularity of Good Friday in how it is tied to forgiveness but you also bring out the idea from NT Wright about how we have paganized our atonement theology. How has our atonement theology been paganize resulting in certain views of how God forgives? 
 
You have a chapter on what the Cross meant to Jesus? How did he understand His death? (Chapter 9) 
 
Let’s venture into a bit of the political nature of the cross. Quite a few of your chapters from 10 on deal with how Jesus’ death exposes the Powers and Empire. I love your connections to the ring of power from the LOTR in chapter 10, how does this image connect to the cross? (This is very applicable in this election season!) 
 
In chapter 11 “The War is over” you say “Jesus is the Prince of Peace who died on the cross refusing to wage war upon his enemies. Now we are called to live as citizens of his peaceable kingdom no matter what the rest of the world does.” Walk us through this idea. 
 
We just did a 2 part series looking at Isaiah 53 and something in those episodes we touched on was the idea of scapegoating. In chapter 12: The Sacrifice to end all sacrifice, you also look at scapegoating- about how we often demand a victim but God does not. Please speak a little on scapegoating, sacrifice, and the cross. 
 
This also ties into your chapter 13 on the lynching of the Son of Man- how the cross was a lynching. And how the cross deals with capital punishment in chapter 14. It seems like the modern church is so far from the early church in this view and maybe we need to look more closely at the cross. 
 
Chapter 17 is called the Harrowing of Hell. It’s all about Holy Saturday and resurrection, and how “the death of God dooms death”. Speak to us a little about this because I feel this is a downplayed thing or ignored often in the evangelical church. 
 
Chapter 18 is the Lamb upon the throne. It talks all about Revelation and also the way God rules the world. What does the cross tell us about how God chooses to rule the world? 
 
We believe the cross is something we’ll never fully get to the bottom of. But I do love how you explain it in your intro: 
 
The cross is the pinnacle of divine disclosure, the eternal moment of forgiveness, divine solidarity with human suffering, the enduring model of discipleship, the supreme demonstration of divine love, the beauty that saves the world, the re-founding of the world around the axis of love, the overthrow of the satan, the shaming of the principalities and Powers, the unmasking of mob violence, the condemnation of state violence, the expose of political power, the abolition of war, the sacrifice to end sacrificing, the great divide of humankind, the healing center of the cosmos, the death by which death is conquered, the lamb upon the throne, the tree of life recovered and revealed. And with this brief list of interpretations, I’ve come nowhere near exhausting the meaning of the cross, for indeed the crucifixion of Jesus is an inexhaustible revelation of who God is. 
 
For those who are set in stone on their one mechanical way to view the cross what is you message to them… or even to the church on how we can usher God’s people into a more beautiful view of the cross?

Conclusions 
 
As in the interpretation of the OT context of Isaiah 53, we don’t see God acting in wrath against the servant but rather healing and redeeming him. It was the people who acted in violence against the servant. But God used this for our redemption. 
 
Jesus did bear sin… He bore the sinful and violent actions of the people. 
 
Some of the major things we can take away is that God can redeem evil for his good. The evil actions of the people were redeemed in the healing of the servant. And the crowd later realized those actions were not of God, even though they thought they were doing the Lord’s bidding in their scapegoating. 
 
PSA is also non-existent in the interpretations of Isaiah 53 in the OT when we compare the voices of the LXX and the MT. Also the NT writers consistently use the LXX when referring to Isaiah 53 and never apply Jesus’ death to anything regarding wrath satisfaction or appeasement.
