Bad Teaching is like a bad diet.  It may taste good, look good, even smell good, but in the end it does us no good.

When it comes to the gospel, familiarity is a double-edged sword.  It can be a blessing for those who love it and a curse for those with contempt for it.

In those people always chasing after ‘signs and wonders’ one sees not a surfeit of faith, but actually a deficit thereof.  Jesus himself called that quest a mark of “an evil and adulterous generation.”

When it comes to Jesus, neutrality amounts to opposition, playing it safe amounts to playing Him false.  No way to be a friend of Jesus unless one takes sides with Jesus.

Which is easier to say,  “Believe in Me or Follow Me?”  Those are two sides of the same coin, not a first and a second commitment.  One cannot do the first without doing the second.

Faith is like a plant.  Some plants are living, some are dead.  Local churches house both.  Living faith is responsive to Jesus and His Word.

Not everything that glitters is gold, and not every miraculous sign and wonder comes from the Father. We must be discerning about any minister or movement that looks harder for miracles than the cross of Jesus Christ. All of that flash and glam can distract multitudes from the fact that they are following a cult that devalues Christ, de-emphasizes the cross, and defiles God's word.

03-15-20 "Supernatural: Divine or Devilish?" (Matt 4:23-25)

Never underestimate the hidden treasures in God’s Word.  Flowers may be found in rocky places.  Just recently the tiniest yellow flower springing up in a small patch of ugly moss caught my eye.  That discovery reminded me:  anytime I fail to see the value of any given biblical text, chalk it up to a deficiency of personal insight rather than any deficiency of divine oversight.

11-17-19  "Hidden Treasures in ‘Throwaway’ Scriptures" (Matthew 1:1-17)

From both sacred and secular history, it appears to me that our sovereign God does one of three things: He blesses some with the leadership they deserve (relatively speaking) or He tests some with leaders better than they deserve or He will burden some with the leaders they so richly deserve.

When it comes to parenting, (in time) what goes in tends to come out.  Where we sow field of wheat, we do not normally expect a field of weeds.  And we also know this principle too: garbage in, garbage out.  In short, the Scriptures teach us there is a strong tendency at the end of the day for parents to produce their own kind.

There was a day when most people lived to work; today it seems to me more and more live to play.  Once upon a time most folks took an annual vacation and were glad to get back to work.  These days, I notice, more and more take a job just to buy opportunity to get away from work.   Many take more days off than sunshine in Oregon.  Somewhere along the line our once famous Puritan work ethic went the way of pantaloons.  Now, like France, some are clamoring for a four-day work week.  This drift from the biblical virtue of diligence is only one more symptom of a foolish age.
