How do we have true joy?

Joy is possible because with Jesus there is always a glimmer of hope. On the night before His death, Jesus prepares his disciples for the grief they’re about to experience in the coming days with a glimmer of hope of what comes beyond that. He promises that when their grief will be turned to a deep joy, and “no one will take their joy away.” The resurrection of Jesus and the gospel message offers a type of joy and hope that no person or situation can steal from us. We don’t become who we were made to be by going beyond these simple gospel realities, but by going deeper into them, following the Spirit’s lead.

In a world where love is becoming more ambiguous and dependent on fluctuating feelings, a steady definition is required. John says “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.” The love that the Spirit cultivates in us is not self-seeking or self-centered. It’s sacrificial. As we become the people God created us to be, we begin to choose what’s best for others even when it costs us.

How do we know what love is?

The process of becoming the person God made you to be is just that- a process. So following Jesus can sometimes be frustrating because we experience the visible benefit in a much more gradual, unhurried manner. While we are instantly justified, redeemed, and adopted, we often don’t see the fruit of that decision instantly. Fruit takes time- we don’t immediately exude Christ-likeness.

Love When It's Not Deserved | Kyle Idleman

After Paul paints a picture of a Spirit-led person in Galatians 5, he turns our attention to the more practical relational shift that takes place in our lives when we’re led by the Spirit. In doing so, he clarifies what it means to be filled with “goodness”. In this passage, we see that the Spirit calls us and empowers us to never give up on goodness and give it away freely.

Kindness & Goodness // EPISODE 5

So much of a believer’s life is about learning to wait faithfully. Faithfulness is the practical response to a confident expectation that God will do what He said He would do. In Hebrews 11, we walk down the “hall of faith” and gaze at the impressive portraits of ancient believers and their trust in God. The author reminds us that these believers “were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised.” The Spirit develops within us a sort of faithfulness so confident in God’s promises that we choose obedience even when the reward doesn’t come when we’d expect.

Perhaps, no other fruit of the Spirit provides a starker contrast between those who are led by the Spirit and those who conform to the current cultural climate. Bitterness, rage, anger, and slander seem to be human beings’ first language. But if we tune out the loudest voices, we can hear the Spirit quietly guiding us into a life of gentleness, a life where we don’t scream for attention, but are living attentively- one where we are slow to anger and quick to forgive.

Gentleness // EPISODE 7

Prior to unveiling the picture of the Spirit-led person, Paul tells the horror story of a life led by sinful desires. This sort of life isn’t much of a life at all as it drags its victims toward death and separation from God. The Spirit helps us see sin for what it is, but so often we live by our feelings rather than the Spirit. When we see sin for what it is, we don’t begrudgingly curb our sinful desires, we gladly strive for self-control like a sinking swimmer reaches for a life–preserver.
