In every season in the life of the people of God, there are certain things that Jesus is wanting us to understand. He loves us and desires to transform us into His image. Whenever we become more like Jesus, we are experiencing, at street level, the holiness of Jesus. It is truly His holiness, which He has chosen to share with us. But what happens when we choose things that Jesus doesn’t want? We become unholy and our lives suffer for it. In this weekend’s message, we will see where the Church in Thyatira is struggling and how Jesus invites them to join Him in holiness.

Sometimes life is messy. Unfortunately, there are other times when life is downright brutal. The Church in Smyrna was experiencing brutal persecution. The kind that we read about in books that we cannot even fathom. Jesus, their Lord and Savior, knew everything that this church was going through. And Jesus wanted to encourage and build up this broken church. And there is much that we can learn from His encouragement to them.

As Christians, we love reading the epistles in the New Testament, as the Lord uses His apostles to help guide local churches. Many people do not realize that Jesus Himself inspired seven letters to seven churches in Revelation 2-3. We will be seeing Jesus’ letter to the Church in Ephesus, where Jesus invites them to make sure their love for Him is the priority.

It is easy to take things for granted. We know that we shouldn’t, but unfortunately, in the busyness of life, it happens. Our families and friends, our present blessings and circumstances, where we are on life’s journey can all be taken for granted. And it is all too easy to take Jesus for granted. The Apostle John captures an inspiring moment in the life of Jesus from which we can draw many hope-filled insights.

“If I could just find a little peace.” Unfortunately, we’ve all spoken these words before. Life is full of issues, trials and troubles. No matter how hard we try, human effort cannot fix everything in this broken world. Yet, Jesus comes to bring the very thing that we are longing for… peace. The peace that Jesus offers is absolutely necessary for our wholeness and flourishing in this life.

Hope. We all deal with it for better or worse. Sometimes we seem to have it, and other times we seem to lose it. But what is it? Is it possible that it's a whole lot different than we think, maybe far better? God thinks so. That's why he tells us such great things about it in his Word.

Much of the victory we find in Christ comes from trusting the Lord and seeing our circumstances through the lens of the Spirit. Without this deeply Biblical perspective, we are left trying to understand a confusing world with our very limited resources. The victorious life is not about having different circumstances as much as it is about having a heavenly mindset. James desires to help us understand the oftentimes we just need to hang in there while God is working things out.

There are two sides of wisdom. One side is knowing what to do...this is a positive understanding that we should do something specific. The other side of wisdom is knowing what things not to do...these are specific behaviors that we want to avoid. Wisdom is both doing the right things and also not doing the wrong things. James wants to deepen our understanding of wisdom by teaching us three important things that we shouldn’t do.

Unfortunately, our world is full of conflict. Whether it be between nations, races, political parties, neighbors or friends, conflict seems to be an inevitable part of life. But why is our world so filled with conflict?  Simply stated, James tells us it happens because we are self-focused on fulfilling our own desires. This desire-seeking leads us to make unholy friendships and ultimately leads us away from God. But the Lord is inviting all of us back home.

We live in an information age. Through technology, we have access to enormous amounts of information. But if you have ever researched any topic, you will find much disagreement on what things are and what we should do. There are many different viewpoints and perspectives. James wants to help us understand that we need to look at the origin of different ideas and perspectives. Some ideas are heavenly. Others are earthly. And we must choose the heavenly wisdom at all cost.

Heavenly Wisdom (James 3:13-18) - Pastor Daniel Fusco

Theologian and reformer Martin Luther wanted the Book of James to be thrown out of the canon of Scripture specifically because of the text we are studying this Sunday. Why is that? He felt that it contradicted the Apostle Paul’s teaching on justification by faith without works. But history has shown that James was absolutely on point with his insights...he was getting at something that’s absolutely essential for our Christian life: we are saved by the grace of God, not our own works. And the flipside of that coin is that the very faith that saves us is demonstrated through our transformed life! The question is how all that works itself out in real life, here and now. Don’t miss this powerful study on one of the most foundational sections of scripture for our lives today.

A Faith That Works (James 2:14-26) Pastor Daniel Fusco

The old saying goes, “Actions speak louder than words.” Although words may express our thoughts and feelings, they have no power without actions to back them up. And that is why the book of James is so practical for our daily life! James is passionate about how we ought to live in light of who Jesus is and everything He has done for us. James points out that how we treat people from different socioeconomic backgrounds either reinforces barriers, OR breaks them down. He exposes our true motivations, and questions how bias and prejudice fit into God’s plan for humanity. We have never been a community of believers who have shied away from the difficult discussions of our walk with God...And now more than ever, the topics we will tackle on Sunday are absolutely vital to following the Lord in today’s world.

Psalm 139 is an absolute explosion of deep thoughts about God’s omniscience, omnipresence and omnipotence. It’s such an incredible feeling to know that this life we live is a gift from the Creator God! His thoughts about us are so deep, we can't even understand them. And no matter how much we study God and His word, we can never exhaust His wisdom. It makes you stop and say “Wow..all this knowledge is so amazing!” So the question is, what do we do with it? The answer isn’t as difficult as we might think...we simply respond to Jesus! This week as we come to the end of Psalm 139 and our Radiant series, we will encounter some fresh words of wisdom that can help us lead a life that is spiritually fulfilled, full of God’s peace, and moving in the right direction.
