• The Bible is clear on who/what John WAS NOT. Name two things mentioned in the book of John. (refer to John 1:6-9; 19-20)

• In Luke 24, Jesus told his apostles to do what in the city of Jerusalem until they received the power from on high?

LESSON AT A GLANCE

• According to Acts 2:47, the Lord does the adding, and the saved are in the church;

• John's purpose was to prepare the way of the Lord (see Isaiah 40:3; Matthew 3:3; Malachi 3:1)

• Jesus' purpose was for the church--the kingdom-- to be established (see Matthew 16:18)
He told his early followers that it would occur their lifetime (see Mark 9:1)

• Let the Bible Speak... Luke 24:46-49
Jesus told the apostles that he would send the promise of the Father upon them, which would include being "endued with power from on high"

○ This power was Holy Spirit baptism
○ It was for the apostles, NOT US
○ It would begin at Jerusalem
○ He noted that the apostles would be witness of his death and resurrection.

• The Sequence of Events... Acts 1 and 2

○ Jesus told the apostles to wait in Jerusalem before ascending into heaven... Acts 1:10-11

○ The apostles returned to Jerusalem and waited for the fulfillment of his words... Acts 1:12

○ On the first Pentecost after the resurrection of Christ, Peter and the apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit. "Filled" meaning influenced; they were able to speak in other languages... Acts 2:1-4

○ The prophetic speaking all leads to the event in Acts 2:37-38... Jesus was made Lord (authority) and Christ (deliverer)

• Jews and Gentiles in ONE Body... One church!

○ The church had only Jews initially (see Romans 1:15-16)

○ The gentile converts with the house of Cornelius obeyed the same terms of entrance that the Jews had obeyed (see Acts 10:44-48)

• One Body by the Cross... Ephesians 2:15-16
By Jesus Christ, when he died on the cross, the veil of the temple was torn in two, now Jew and Gentile have access to God in the same body.
