The brain may be wired a certain way, but we can grow.
LESSON AT A GLANCE
• (v. 12) Paul acknowledges that he has not arrived…there is no graduation from Christianity. There is always opportunity for learning and growth.
○ Godliness with contentment is great gain (see 1 Timothy 6:6)
• (v. 13-14) To keep maturing, I need to forget those things that are behind--put the past behind and leave it there.
○ We have been apprehended--we are in Christ's custody; regulated.
○ The love of Christ constrains us (see 2 Corinthians 5:14)
○ We must reach forward with relentless pursuit and perfection.
• (v. 15) "minded" (phroneo in the Greek) is verb, meaning to think; exercise the mind; to reason; to be mentally disposed in a certain direction
○ Some people can be mentally disposed to be negative
• To react or to think
○ Fight: Fight the good fight of faith; Paul provides the same direction to Timothy that he has taken himself: "to lay hold on eternal life" (see 1 Timothy 6:12)
○ Flight: Flee fornication and idolatry; run from sexual immorality; do not put anything above God (see 1 Corinthians 6:18; 1 Corinthians 10:14)
○ Freeze: Stand Still (see Exodus 14:11-14)
