STUDIES IN THE BOOK OF DANIEL.
Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream (1) Dan. 2:1-49
Daniel and his friends have been divinely positioned and prepared for the events ahead. These
events, were designed to confirm the theme of the book that the most high rules in the kingdom
of men, and to encourage the people of God that were in captivity. The Gentile world should
know and worship the God of the Hebrews, and be informed of the universal kingdom the
coming Messiah. “Dreams were considered to be messages from the gods, and the wise men
were expected to interpret them.” Life Application study Bible”
1. Dan. 2:1-3. “… Nebuchadnezzar dreamt dreams wherewith his spirit was
troubled and his sleep brake from him…” Est. 6:1, Job. 7:4, Ec. 5:12, Is. 57:20.
a. “Nebuchadnezzar’s anxiety is accompanied by sleeplessness. The Hebrew
phrase used here indicates a turmoil that would disrupt normal sleeping
patterns. Similar Hebrew phrases occur in connection with dreams, such as in
the Joseph narrative. In Gen 41:8.” Faithlife Study Bible. These were similarly
troubled by a dream. Gen. 40:1-23; 41:1-8; Dan. 4:5
b. “The greatest of men are not exempt from, nay, they lie most open to, those
cares and troubles of mind which disturb their repose in the night, while the
sleep of the labouring man is sweet and sound, and the sleep of the sober
temperate man free from confused dreams. The abundance of the rich will not
suffer them to sleep at all for care, and the excesses of gluttons and
drunkards will not suffer them to sleep quietly for dreaming.” M. Henry.
Unbelievers and sinners have no rest. Deut. 28:66-67, Ec. 2:13, Is. 57:20
2. Dan. 2:2-3. “Then the king commanded to call the magicians…for to show the
king his dreams” Is. 47:12-13, Ex. 7:11. Magicians, Astrologers, Chaldeans are
the conjurers and the sorcerers are members of the priestly class who claimed to
predict the future and communicate with spirits to alter the course of future
events.
