"Yield Not to Temptation" by Gale Nelson
Date: Sunday, August 16, 2020

It has been said, "Sin will take you further than you want to go, cost you more than you can pay, and keep you longer than you want to stay!" When combatting temptation, it is imperative that one understand where the exit doors are!

It is written in 1 Corinthians 10:13, "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it."

1. There are no uncommon temptations.
2. God will not suffer us to be tempted above our abilities.
3. No temptation is without a way to escape.

TEMPTATION DEFINED

* Temptation is the trial of man's fidelity (faith in God), integrity (your value, do you mean what you say), virtue (what you hold dear), or constancy (your steadfastness--are you fixed or variable).

* Temptation is an entincement to sin, whether arising from the desires (internal) or from outward circumstances.

* Temptation is a diversion from a divine errand (the devil sought to divert Jesus).

* Temptation is a lapse from faith and holiness.

APPLYING THE SCRIPTURES

* We are partaker's of Christ's sufferings. We need to be tried/tempted, and should rejoice in it. We should get comfortable being uncomfortable! (1 Peter 4:12-13)

* There is blessing in enduring temptation; God does not tempt man with evil. The formula for sin is fueled by man's lust: a seed is planted on fertile ground, and provided the environment to grow. (see James 1:2-4,12-16)

* The love of money has caused people to do many things, compromising their fidelity, virtue and constancy. The cares of this world caused some to err from the faith--Jesus speaks of this in the parable of the Sower (Luke 8) with the weeds that grew with the seed, choking out the Word. Children of God need to flee hurtful lusts, and follow after Christ. (see 1 Timothy 6:7-11)

* Temptation has everything to do with our mindset: will we take heed, or will we find a way to escape?

* Jesus was tempted of the devil, but combatted the devil with the Word of God. As a result, the devil departed for a season, having ended all the temptation. (see Luke 4:12-13)

* Don't tempt Christ! Watch and learn from the mistakes of those who murmured, worshipped idols, and committed sexual immorality because Satan had his way with them. The word has to be sown in our heart. (see 1 Corinthians 10:5-15)

* Be aware, don't be blindsided! Understand what's going on around you that ye not enter into temptation. (see Mark 14:38)

* If we are vigilant and aware, then we can aid our brothers and sisters as well. Maintain your growth and development. (see Galatians 6:1-3)

* "The Lord knowth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished." 2 Peter 2:9
