LESSON QUESTIONS

• What does the Greek word (gnosis) mean?
• To "add" to our faith means more than just the sum of multiple things. Explain using the Greek word (epichoregeo).
• What does the Greek word (epignosis) mean?

LESSON AT A GLANCE

• As knowledge increases, we need to add more self-control.

• It is not enough to know scripture, it is what you do with it.

• Temperance (or "Enkrateia" in the Greek) requires a source of strength.

○ It speaks to one holding himself in (or reigning it in).
○ It also refers to one who masters his desires and passion, especially the sensual appetites.

• Adding to Our Faith means:

○ We have to believe that God is able (faith)
○ We have to strive for excellence (virtue)
○ We have to seek to know God more accurately (knowledge)
○ We have to build self-control (temperance)

• The only way to build self-control is to tap into the source: God.

• Self-control (or temperance) is therefore the discipline of one's self so as to live in harmony with the knowledge of right and wrong that one has.

• Discipleship... Luke 9:23

○ One cannot be a disciple of Jesus without exercising self-control.

• Christians will fall away. To prevent falling away:

○ Paul said he kept his body under control (see 1 Corinthian 9:27)
○ Peter's condemnation of false teachers included them becoming enslaved again (see 2 Peter 2:19-20)
○ Athlete must exercise self-control to win the race (see 1 Corinthians 9:24-25)

• We must have self-control if we desire an imperishable crown.

• The WAR is Real between the flesh and soul... 1 Peter 2:11
