Pleasing God requires Godliness.

It is written, "Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;"

• Explain a ship anchored in the context of patience?

LESSON AT A GLANCE

• Godliness (or "Eusebia" in the Greek) means to worship well; to be very devout.

○ Christians should maintain a focus on an attitude well pleasing to God.
○ Character and conduct determined by the principle of love and fear of God

• Devilish Character of mankind… 2 Timothy 3:1-5

○ People may not like you because the Spirit in you disturbs the devilish in them

• Seeking to please God… John 8:29; Galatians 1:10; 1 Thessalonians 4:1-2; Proverbs 15:16

○ Look to the example of Jesus, who the Father did not leave alone even though he went through challenges
○ Godliness is just not an outward show.
○ It is seeking to please God, not man.
○ Godliness will result in growth.
○ Count your blessings, not what you don't have.

• Physical and Spiritual Exercise… 1 Timothy 4:7-8

○ Godliness will not come automatically, we have to work to stay in shape
○ Bodily exercise will not save your soul.

• Benefits of Grace

○ God wants us to live in a way that is pleasing to him (see 1 Timothy 2:1-3)
○ Look to Jesus and the blessed hope (see Titus 2:11-13)
