We've come now in our study through the Bible to Elijah, one of the greatest prophets in the Old Testament. Remember that at this time, Israel was divided between the 10 tribes in the north, called Israel and two tribes in the south, called Judah.

The king of the northern nation of Israel was Ahab who was the worst of all the kings that Israel had had. He married that wicked woman Jezebel and he went to serve Baal and worshiped him.

So Ahab erected an altar for Baal and he also made the Asherah, which were wooden symbols of the female deity of sexuality. You don’t need much of an imagination to realize how ugly things became in Israel. Thus Ahab did more to provoke the God of Israel than all the kings of Israel who were before him.

But Elijah was on fire for God and he rose up to make a difference in his generation. He was called of God to stand before Ahab and declare that there would be neither dew nor rain until he gave the word. After that, he went to the brook Cherith where God provided his needs. But then when the brook dried up God sent him to Zarephath. It's at Zarephath that our story takes place.

When Elijah arrived at Zarephath, he met a widow who had come to the end of her resources and was preparing the last meal for her and her son after which she expected that they would die. But then Elijah arrived and said that her bowl of flour would not be exhausted and her jar of oil would not be empty until the Lord sent rain on the face of the earth.

All was well for some time until it came about that the son of the widow became sick; and his sickness was so severe that there was no breath left in him.

Here is where there are many applications for our own lives as well as there were for the widow and even for Elijah as well.
