As we continue our study the life of Elijah, we pick it up in 1 Kings 18:39. Elijah had confronted Ahab along with 450 prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. This was an open challenge so that the people of Israel would know that Jehovah was indeed God of Israel. The prophets of Baal were allowed to place a bullock on an altar and pray to Baal that he would answer by fire, but there was no voice and no one answered.

This went on all day long with the prophets of Baal calling out loudly and even cutting themselves, but there was no answer. So at the end of the day at the time of the evening sacrifice, Elijah prepared an altar, placed a bullock upon it, had it drenched with water three times and called out to Jehovah.

God answered immediately with fire and consumed the bullock on the altar. When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces, and they said, "The Lord, he is God." Elijah immediately commanded that the 450 prophets of Baal be seized. They were brought down to the brook Kishon where they were killed.

Elijah then went up to the top of Carmel, put his face between his knees and prayed. God had demonstrated his awesome power, the people cried out in recognition that Jehovah was indeed God, but there was still one more thing. God had promised that there would be rain and so again we see Elijah in prayer that God would fulfill his Word.

There are two prayers of Elijah that we want to focus on today in our study. In these prayers we will see Elijah’s spiritual highs, but also his spiritual lows. And there are so many spiritual lessons for each one of us as we understand the application not only of Elijah's spiritual victories, but also when he reaches his lowest point.
