Eli failed to discipline his sons and because of that they did not know the Lord. Worse yet, they served in the Tabernacle and corrupted the people of Israel with their sin. God pronounced a curse upon them that they would all did in one day and that their children, who should have been in the line of High Priests, would hunger for the most menial offices in the priesthood.
If we take lightly God's purpose for our lives we may find that, one day, God removes any possibility of us fulfilling that purpose. The grace of God often gives people in that condition happy and fulfilled lives; yet knowing they forfeited the perfect will of God leaves them with an empty place that can never be fulfilled.
