1 Samuel 24:4 contains the unsolicited counsel of some very good and sincere companions of David. Their counsel seemed consistent with the promises of God for David and appeared justified by Saul's being "delivered" to them. David, however, was the only man who could know what was God's will. The Bible had not specifically promised God would let David kill Saul. David's conscience knew better than to do this thing.
We will often receive counsel and advice from well meaning friends who believe that, though not specifically in the Bible, their advice is generally Biblical. Our responsibility is not necessarily to heed their advice but to hear it and take it into consideration. We are responsible for only two things:
To obey God's Word completely
To worship God according to the dictates of our (Biblically aware) conscience.
