Eli's failure to discipline his sons led to God's judgment against his family for generations into the future. However, Eli did have a spiritual side. He was, after a time, able to recognize God speaking through young Samuel and he was submissive to the will of the Lord, even though it was judgment.
Every saved person has those same two sides. Counselors might call them compartments. One is where we fit in the worldly things. It's called in the Bible the flesh. The other is where we keep our spiritual desires. God's Word tells us that these two "compartments" are at war with one another.
The wise Christian enables the spiritual side so that it might defeat the worldly side.
