In this mid-week bible study, Bro. Nelson expounds upon the common expression, "God knows my heart," arguing that it is NOT an acceptable replacement for obedience.

KEY LEARNING PRINCIPLES:

• It is oftentimes used as an excuse…
Reveals the disparity between what God said vs. what someone does or believe

○ The scriptures regarding NT plan of salvation - Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38

○ The scriptures regarding worship - John 8:24; Ephesians 5:19
There is no other savior than Jesus

○ The scriptures regarding one's manner of life

• It is intended to nullify obedience...

○ God knows I have good intentions does NOT render the teaching of the scripture moot (see 1 Samuel 15:3,21-26)

○ I am sincere does NOT change disobedience into acceptable behavior (see Acts 26:9-11; Romans 10:2; Galatians 1:13,14)

○ It does not mean your heart (or mind) is accepted…

○ Sinful behavior cannot be disassociated from that which is in the heart (see Matthew 15:18-20)

○ It provides no defense for continued disobedience to the Scripture, but rather prevents a sinner from making the changes necessary to be acceptable before God (see Jeremiah 13:10; Psalm 78:8)

• Yes, God knows Your heart... Psalm 44:20-21

1 Chronicles 28:9-10
A complete heart is a willing mind
Our minds should be made up--be strong and do it.

1 Samuel 16:7
Man can be tricked or bamboozled, but God cannot be deceived. He judges the heart.

Proverbs 21:2
"I don't see anything wrong with it" in essence means I have made a decision, and it is alright with God.

Luke 16:15
Jesus lets them know he understands how they roll, yet that which is highly esteemed amongst men is an abomination in the sight of God.

• I am not a competent judge--even of my own heart… 1 Corinthians 4:3-4

• God Reveals Your Heart

○ By the scriptures... God's truth is revealed in his word, and reveals the true nature of our heart (see 2 Timothy 3:16-17; Luke 8:11; Hebrews 4:12)

○ By our obedience... Our heart is revealed in our response to God's word (see 1 John 4:1-2; Romans 8:1-2,12-14; Matthew 7:16-17; Matthew 12:33, Matthew 15:18)

○ We may have confidence in that which God has revealed (see 2 Timothy 4:2-4; 1 John 3:19-23)
