Song # 1507.1 from Our Gospel In Song Collection by Col Johnston. The Book of John tells us in chapter 6 that many followers of Jesus turned away when they did not understand what Jesus meant when He said “Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you will have no life in you” (John 6:53). Jesus was referring to believing and trusting in Him in Spirit, and the Holy Spirit would help guide them to eternal life. He did not mean to physically eat His body, but they did not understand Him.
Aware that His disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them “Does this offend you?” (John 6:61). “What if you see the Son of Man ascend to where He was before!” (John 6:62). “The Spirit gives life, the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are Spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63). “Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray Him (John 6:64). Jesus said “This is why I told you that no-one can come to me unless the Father has enabled him” (John 6:65). From this time many of His disciples turned back and no longer followed Him (John 6:66). Jesus asked the Twelve “You do not want to leave too, do you?” (John 6:67). Simon Peter answered Him “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life” (John 6:68). “We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God” (John 6:69). Then Jesus replied “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!” (John 6:70). Jesus knew that Judas Iscariot, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray Him (John 6:71).
Thought for today: God’s love won’t keep us from trials, but will help us through them.
Thought for the future: ask God for a new heart, and a new start in life. Where will you spend your eternity?
