Song # 1568.1 from Our Gospel In Song Collection by Col Johnston. Zephaniah tells us in chapter 1 that the Lord will punish those who bow down and worship other gods.
I will stretch out my hand against Judah and against all who live in Jerusalem. I will cut off from this place every remnant of *Baal, the names of the pagan and idolatrous priests (Zephaniah 1:4). Those who bow down on the roofs, to worship the starry host, those who bow down and swear by the Lord and who also swear by **Molech (Zephaniah 1:5). Those who turn back from following the Lord and neither seek the Lord nor enquire of Him (Zephaniah 1:6). Be silent before the Sovereign Lord, for the day of the Lord is near. (Zephaniah 1:7). On that day I will punish the princes and the king’s sons and all those clad in foreign clothes (Zephaniah 1:8). On that day I will punish all who fill the temple of their gods with violence and deceit (Zephaniah 1:9). On that day declares the Lord, a cry will go up (Zephaniah 1:10), and those who trade with silver will be ruined (Zephaniah 1:11). At that time I will punish those who are complacent, those who think the Lord will do nothing, either good or bad (Zephaniah 1:12).
* Baal: the Canaanites believed that Baal was the most powerful of all gods. (NIV)
** Molech: the national god of the Ammonites. Some Israelites offered human sacrifices to Molech in the Hinnom Valley near Jerusalem. (NIV)
Thought for today: God speaks to those who listen, and listens to those who pray.
Thought for the future: the richest people in the world are those who invest in heaven. Where will you spend your eternity?
