Song # 1891.1 from Our Gospel In Song Collection by Col Johnston. We read in the Book of Matthew in chapter 9 that Jesus came into the world, not just to call the righteous, but to save the ‘sinners’.
Jesus saw a man named Levi - son of Alphaeus (Mark 2:14), also known as Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth, “Follow me” Jesus told him, and Matthew got up and followed Him (Matthew 9:9). While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and ‘sinners’ came and ate with them and His disciples (Matthew 9:10). When the Pharisees saw this, they asked His disciples “Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and ‘sinners’? (Matthew 9:11). On hearing this, Jesus said “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick” (Matthew 9:12). “But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners” (Matthew 9:13).
Thought for today: Jesus asks us to join Him for life.
Thought for the future: a newspaper informs, while the Holy Bible transforms. Where will you spend your eternity?
