Song # 1905.1 from Our Gospel In Song Collection by Col Johnston. We read in Matthew chapter 22 that the Sadducees asked Jesus about a widow marrying again, and if she had several husbands who died, whose wife would she be in heaven. The Sadducees were a small, conservative and powerful group of Jews in New Testament times. They were closely associated with the high priests and accepted only the first five books of the Hebrew Scriptures they called the Torah, as their Bible. They also did not believe in life after death.
The Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus with a question (Matthew 22:23). “Teacher” they said “Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and have children for him” (Matthew 22:24). “Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother” (Matthew 22:25). “The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh” (Matthew 22:26). “Finally, the woman died” (Matthew 22:27). “Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?” (Matthew 22:28). Jesus replied “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God” (Matthew 22:29). “At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage, they will be like the Angels in heaven” (Matthew 22:30). “But at the resurrection of the dead - have you not read what God said to you” (Matthew 22:31), “‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?’ He is not the God of the dead but of the living” (Matthew 22:32).
Thought for today: there’s only one way to heaven, and that is through Jesus.
Thought for the future: no-one is more secure than those in God’s hands. Where will you spend your eternity?
