John the Baptist continued his testimony about Jesus, the Lamb of God, when he said, "30 This is the One I meant when I said, 'A Man who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me.' 31 I myself did not know Him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that He might be revealed to Israel." (John 1)

Oh, John! What do you mean 'you didn't know Him?' You are His cousin! Surely you were acquainted with Him!

Well of course he was! John is not saying he didn't know Who Jesus was; he's saying he didn't at first know WHAT Jesus was. And that's a big difference. He's saying, "Oh, I get it now! Jesus is the Lamb of God! He's God's Chosen One to take away the sins of the world! He came after me, but He's surpassed me because He was before me! I get it now! I know who AND WHAT Jesus is!"

It's one thing to know the historical facts about Jesus the Man, born in Bethlehem, worker of miracles, teacher of The Teachings . . . it's entirely another thing to say, "I know He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, God's Chosen One for the task. I believe Him. I receive Him. I choose to live my life . . . for Him."
