Historian Philip Schaff has described the overwhelming influence which Jesus Christ has had on subsequent history and culture of the world:

"This Jesus of Nazareth, without money and arms, conquered more millions than Alexander, Caesar, Mohammed, and Napoleon; without science…he shed more light on things human and divine than all philosophers and scholars combined; without the eloquence of schools, he spoke such words of life as were never spoken before or since, and produced effects which lie beyond the reach of orator or poet; without writing a single line, he set more pens in motion and furnished themes for more sermons, orations, discussions, learned volumes, works of art, and songs of praise than the whole army of great men of ancient and modern times.”

BUT . . . all this . . . did not . . . come easily . . . or cheaply. Jesus and the Jewish leaders/authorities battled and debated . . . hard . . . until the day finally came when Jesus – the Son and Messenger of God – was crucified.

There is a progression in serious arguments. Conflict starts at the INTELLECTUAL level and there’s a debate with each side presenting their arguments. If there’s no meeting of the minds, it deteriorates to an EMOTIONAL level with each side talking louder, sweating, hands flailing. If that goes badly, it goes down one more level to the level of verbal SLANDER. After that, there’s only thing left – PHYSICAL altercation.

And before the Great Debate of John Chapter Eight is over, there’s where things end up with the Pharisees. They are hopelessly outmatched by Jesus Christ, the God of the universe.
