The warning Jesus gives – yet again – is that when the sun sets – (the Son of Righteousness – let the reader understand) – then it will be lights out. Darkness – pitch black darkness. And so, “Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light” (John 12:36). Make your journey of faith – believing in Him – while the Light is still here, because once The Light is gone, you’ll be like a wandering hiker on a moonless night: completely lost.
We don’t know when the darkness will fall on us as individuals, nor as families, nor upon us as a culture or a nation, but we know that for those who do not believe, it surely will. God’s patience has an expiry date. His patience is great, but it is not unlimited.
The final warning from Christ is that time is short, and that none of us knows exactly what time it is. Don’t go beyond His limits and don’t exhaust His patience. If your heart is open to the Gospel, if you feel any sort of pull to believe in Him, if you have any sensitivity to spiritual things at all, then the time to believe in Jesus Christ is RIGHT NOW. The time to pray is right now. The time to confess Him as your Savior is right now. The time to crown Him as your Lord is right now. The time to turn away from every known sin is right now. The time to start following Him in earnest is right now.
Why now? Because there are absolutely no guarantees how long it will be before midnight falls, darkness descends and you cannot believe. That's right, cannot. Jesus said so.
