"LORD, I know that people's lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps.” (Jeremiah 10:23)
But this brings up a great mystery, doesn't it? We human beings are “Agents of Free Will” (that’s the technical term). We can choose, make decisions and exercise freedom of the will, but at the same time, God is omnipotent, working out His wise designs even during the whirlwind of human activity, sinfulness, ambition, error and darkness.
Here is the best example of all. We’ve seen Jewish leaders and Roman soldiers acting upon their own free will to capture, crucify and kill the Son of God – and at the same time, fulfilling the eternal counsel of God! Explain! We cannot explain. We can only accept by faith that the predestination of God and the free agency of man are both facts. Men sin as freely as the birds fly in the air and are altogether responsible for their sin. And yet, everything is ordained and foreseen by God without interfering with the responsibility of man!
We attempt to reconcile these two truths. Reconcile? Do they really need reconciling? Why reconcile two friends? These two facts are parallel lines. We can’t unite them and we can’t make them cross each other, either! We believe them, but we cannot explain them. We are best to simply fall down before the Majesty of Divine Revelation and adore the infinite wisdom of God. Our good friend Charles Spurgeon writes: “It is of greater benefit to my soul to believe than to understand, for faith brings me nearer to God than reason ever did!”
Welcome dear friends, to Home Church Langley!
