Bible Class: “(Joseph) took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus. (ESV)” on January 29, 2017 led by Pastor Todd Peperkorn.
Matthew 1:22-25
22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
Matt. 1:23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel (which means, God with us). 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25 but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.
First Question:
- What does the verb “to know” mean?
- What does the improper preposition “until” mean?
(EPIGINOSKO)
3rd person, singular, active indicative
- “to become acquainted with, to come to know something”
- Hebraism, coming from the verb “yada” which may mean “to have sexual relations with”. Here’s an example in the OT:
- “They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah KNEW Hannah his wife, and the LORD remembered her.” (1 Samuel 1:19 ESV)
What do we take from all of this?
- SOLA SCRIPURA doesn’t mean that we know everything.
- There room for differences of opinion on the Scriptures, and there is freedom to believe different things where the Scriptures are open.
- Let’s not make matters divisive in the Church that don’t need to be divisive.
