A young believer can rattle off a few Bible verses and some doctrinal truths from the Gospel like a short burst of machine gun fire. And that’s good. They should be able to do that. But if you want to taste the sweetness of that verse, feel the power of that verse and enjoy the savour of that doctrinal truth, you need to hear those same Bible verses coming from the lips of one who’s had long and deep experience!
If you want to hear about the sea, talk to an old sailor. If you want to hear about the war, you should talk to an old soldier who has seen the planes flying overhead, felt the earth move under his feet from the explosions, smelt the smell of gunpowder, marched through the night at gunpoint or lost a leg in action. Those are the ones to tell you what war really is!
And if you want to know about Christ, about Christianity, about the truth and power of God, don’t go to a rookie, go to someone who is producing fruit in old age because they will tell you things from the fullness of their soul and the richness of their experience.
With decades and decades of rich experience with God, they have walked with Him through the high mountain ranges and the deep valleys of the shadow. That experience gives a certain power to what the grey-headed speaker says, especially the one who has been planted by God in the House of the Lord.
So tell every old believer you know . . . tell every grey-headed servant of God . . . tell every old preacher out there . . . don’t you dare quit! Don’t you dare undervalue your contribution! Don’t you dare discount your experiences as insignificant because with advancing years comes the sweet fruit of experience!
