Song # 2061 from Our Gospel In Song Collection by Col Johnston. The Book of Lamentations is a collection of five poems lamenting the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC, and its aftermath of ruin and exile. The song “The City Is Deserted” comes from Lamentations chapter 1.
How deserted lies the city, once so full of people, who once was great among the nations (Lamentations 1:1). Bitterly she weeps at night, tears upon her cheeks; there is none to comfort her. All her friends have betrayed her; they have become her enemies (Lamentations 1:2). She dwells among the nations; she finds no resting place (Lamentations 1:3). The roads to Zion mourn for no-one comes to her appointed feasts. All her gateways are desolate, and she is in bitter anguish (Lamentations 1:4). Her foes have become her masters; her enemies are at ease. The Lord has brought her grief because of her many sins (Lamentations 1:5). All the splendour has departed, her princes have fled (Lamentations 1:6). Her enemies looked at her and laughed at her destruction (Lamentations 1:7). Jerusalem has sinned greatly and so has become unclean. All who honoured her despise her, and she turns away (Lamentations 1:8).
Thought for today: God’s help is only a prayer away.
Thought for the future: don’t be a ‘part-time’ Christian, enjoy God’s gifts every day.
Where will you spend your eternity?
