2 Kings 19:14-17 ESV

14 Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the Lord and spread it before the Lord. 15 And Hezekiah prayed before the Lord and said: “O Lord, the God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth. 16 Incline your ear, O Lord, and hear; open your eyes, O Lord, and see; and hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to mock the living God. 17 Truly, O Lord, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands 18 and have cast their gods into the fire, for they were not gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone. Therefore they were destroyed. 19 So now, O Lord our God, save us, please, from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, O Lord, are God alone.”

He felt desperate for God’s help but not want of faith. Hezekiah’s greatness as a king was in his faith, expresssed through His prayer. His belief that God should not be equated with the pagan gods. In fact, he exalted God. He said: “O Lord, the God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth.” [v.15]
14 Tinanggap ni Hezekias ang sulat sa kamay ng mga sugo, at binasa ito. Pagkatapos ay pumanhik si Hezekias sa bahay ng PANGINOON at iniladlad ito sa harapan ng PANGINOON.15 At si Hezekias ay nanalangin sa harap ng PANGINOON at nagsabi, “O PANGINOONG Diyos ng Israel na nakaupo sa itaas ng mga kerubin, ikaw ang Diyos, ikaw lamang sa lahat ng mga kaharian sa lupa; ikaw ang lumikha ng langit at lupa.16 Ikiling mo ang iyong pandinig, O PANGINOON, at iyong pakinggan at imulat mo ang iyong mga mata, O PANGINOON. Tumingin ka at pakinggan mo ang mga salita ni Senakerib, na kanyang isinugo upang kutyain ang buháy na Diyos.17 Sa katotohanan, PANGINOON, winasak ng mga hari ng Asiria ang mga bansa at ang kanilang mga lupain,18 at inihagis ang kanilang mga diyos sa apoy, sapagkat sila'y hindi mga diyos, kundi gawa ng mga kamay ng mga tao, mga kahoy at bato; kaya't sila'y winasak.19 Ngayon nga, O PANGINOON naming Diyos, iligtas mo kami sa kanyang mga kamay, isinasamo ko sa iyo, upang makilala ng lahat ng mga kaharian sa lupa na ikaw, PANGINOON, ang tanging Diyos.”

YOU, O LORD, ARE GOD ALONE.

Upon receiving the letter from Senacherib, he went into the house of God and spread it before Lord. This time, he did not ask Isaiah’s prayer but did it by himself. This is a wonderful blessing about our relationship with the Lord. Neither one has the monopoly nor somebody is deprived. Specific revelations are provided to the prophets but prayer is available for all.

Jesus has invited all of us to go to Him. He said, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”[Matt 11:28-30]. We could ‘cast all our cares upon Him for He cares for us.”[1 Pet 5:7]

It could be true that Senacherib had wrought success and destroyed the gods of the other pagan nations around. But they were just powerless idols made of wood and stone. But, Yahweh is the only true God, holy and incomparable. That all the kingdoms of the earth shall know the difference, Hezekiah asked God to defeat the Assyrians. He was so zealous to exalt God in his darkest hour, saying, “ You, o Lord, are God alone.”
