The Season
“Epiphany” means “to reveal” or “to make known. During the season of Epiphany Jesus is revealed as the promised Savior of all by his powerful words and actions.

This Sunday
Our human inclination is to listen without faith. This can only lead us to the brow of a cliff and throwing Jesus out of our lives. But the Savior of the Nations comes with his gracious words of redemption and membership in his body. The Word of the Lord is proclaimed through the revelation of his Anointed One. In him faith is rooted, love flourishes, and salvation is known from generation to generation. Today we see Jesus is revealed amidst rejection.

-------
First Lesson: Judges 13:6-24
The Word of the Lord appears to Samson’s parents to foretell his birth as an instrument of the Lord’s deliverance. Samson would be dedicated as a Nazarite of God, just as the Angel of the Lord directed. He would carry the Lord’s message of destruction on the Philistines and rescue for God’s people until the day of his death.

Second Lesson: Romans 10:13-17
This passage describes in detail the process of conversion through the Word. Yet the emphasis on this week of the Church Year highlights not only the work of the Holy Spirit through the Word but also the privilege given to sinful human beings called to serve as Gods messengers, proclaiming that which has the power to bring people to faith. How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!

Gospel: Luke 5:1-11
In calling the disciples to be full-time fishers of men, Jesus reveals his power as the Lord’s anointed. What a beautiful picture of future fishing for these maturing disciples. For the miracle of this abundant catch of fish would only be surpassed by the fishing for souls to which they were called. What a privilege for us to answer the same call, to lay our hands on the net of the gospel, and be fishers of men.
