“When It Appears that There Is No Answer”
1 Samuel 14:36-46

Sin is disobedience to the will of God. Disobedience to God’s law.

The Day you eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you will surely die.
2. Sin separates us from God.
Romans 5:12-14
Sin entered the human race because all have sinned.
Isaiah 59:2
Your iniquities have made a separation
between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
3. We draw near to God through repentance and confession.
Psalm 51:15-16
A broken and contrite heart God will not despise.
1 John 1:8-10
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
4. A psalm of penitence or repentance with a plea for mercy.
Psalm 38
A Psalm of David.
I confess my iniquity I am sorry for my sin.
Do not forsake me, O LORD!
O my God, be not far from me!
Make haste to help me,
O Lord, my salvation!
5. The previous day’s battle.
1 Samuel 14:24
Saul had laid an oath on the people, saying, “Cursed be the man who eats food until it is evening and I am avenged on my enemies.”
6. Saul’s plan for a nighttime attack
1 Samuel 14:36-37
And Saul inquired of God, “Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will you give them into the hand of Israel?” But he did not answer him that day.
1 Samuel 14:16-19
Previously he did not have the faith and patience to wait for the Lord to answer.
7. Why did the Lord delay his answer?
James 1:5-8
Let him ask in faith with no doubting.
Micah 3:1-4
The unrepentant will cry to the Lord but He will not answer them.
8. Saul’s presumption
Somebody must have sinned!
Surely the people have sinned, they ate meat with the blood.
They drew Urim and Thummim to find the quilty party.
9. The people intervene for Jonathan.
1 Samuel 14:43-46
“Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? Far from it!”
10. Christ our intercessor
Romans 8:1-11
There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Hebrews 4:14-16
Let us hold fast our confession, for we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses.
Conclusions:
1. Sin separates all people from God.
2. But God in his mercy has not left us without a savior and an advocate.
3. If we confess our sins and repent with a contrite heart of repentance, Jesus forgives our sins.
Conclusions:
4. Saul has not yet learned to obey the commands of God and confess his own sins.
5. An obedient heart, seeks God, trusts in his salvation, and waits for his word, for the battle is the Lord’s.
