Isaiah 44:2

"Thus said the LORD that made thee, (Well, what does that make Him? The Creator!) and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun (That's just another title for Israel -- the upright ones.) whom I have chosen." Now, you want to remember (I won't take you back and show you the verses) that the Lord said to Israel, "I have not chosen you because you are the greatest." He didn't choose them because they were the most powerful nation on earth. He didn't choose them for any reason whatsoever "but by His grace."
