“The Lord Reveals Himself Through the Word of God”
1 Samuel 3:1-21
1. Background: during and before the time of the Judges.
Prophets and Judges
Hebrews 1:1-2 The Lord spoke by the Prophets
Genesis 15:1 He spoke to Abraham
Numbers 12:5-6 Concerning prophets He says, I the LORD make myself known to him in a vision; I speak with him in a dream.

2. The Word of the Lord was rare in those days.
1 Samuel 3:1-2
There were not many messages from the Lord through his prophets during the time of Eli.

3. Lying down in the temple
1 Samuel 3:3
Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was.
In the temple: “Be-Hekal” First occurrence in the Old Testament. A word often used for a stone structure like a king’s palace and the temple of Solomon.
4. The Lord called Samuel
1 Samuel 3:4-6 By Name.
“Samuel, Samuel”
5. Samuel did not yet know the Lord
1 Samuel 3:7-9
Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, and the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him.
6. The Lord Came and stood and called,
“Samuel, Samuel”.
1 Samuel 3:10
7. The Word of the Lord
1 Samuel 3:11-18
He tells him what is about to take place.
His judgment against the house of Eli is about to be fulfilled.
8. Samuel is established as a prophet
1 Samuel 3:19-21
All Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established as a prophet of the LORD.
9. The Lord reveals himself to us by his word.
