Song # 787.2 from Our Gospel In Song Collection by Col Johnston. Luke tells us in chapter 22, that after the Last Supper, Jesus went with His disciples to pray on the Mount of Olives. There, a crowd led by Judas Iscariot, the betrayer, arrives and Jesus is arrested.
Jesus went as usual to the Mount of Olives, and His disciples followed Him (Luke 22:39). On reaching the place, He said to them “Pray that you will not fall into temptation” (Luke 22:40). Jesus withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed (Luke 22:41). “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me, yet not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42). An Angel from heaven appeared to Jesus and strengthened Him (Luke 22:43). And being in anguish, Jesus prayed more earnestly, and His sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground (Luke 22:44). When Jesus rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, He found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow (Luke 22:45). “Why are you sleeping?” He asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation” (Luke 22:46). While He was speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. Judas approached Jesus to kiss Him (Luke 22:47), but Jesus asked him “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” (Luke 22:48). When the followers of Jesus saw what was going to happen, they said “Lord, should we strike with our swords?” (Luke 22:49). And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear (Luke 22:50). But Jesus answered “No more of this!” And He touched the man’s ear and healed him (Luke 22:51). Then seizing Jesus, they led Him away and took Him into the house of the high priest (Luke 22:54).
Thought for today: we can’t see God’s hand, but we can trust His heart.
Thought for the future: Jesus knows the way to heaven, so follow Him for life. Where will you spend your eternity?
