“The Spirit of the Lord Moves Saul to Action”
1 Samuel 10:17-27
1. The character of men and women of faith.
Hudson Taylor
Founder of China inland mission.
David son of Jesse
1 Samuel 13:14 - a man after the Lord’s own heart.
Good character traits of men and women of faith and good kings of Israel.
1. Like Hudson Taylor some kings set their hearts to seek and serve the Lord.
2. They were men of faith who trusted in the Lord whatever their circumstances.
3. They were obedient to the word of the Lord whatever they understood his will to be.
2. A summary of Saul’s anointing and return to Gibeah.
Saul from the smallest of the tribes of Israel and the least of the clans of Benjamin looks for human confirmation of kingship but God gives a sign.
3. Samuel proclaims Saul as king to all the people.
1 Samuel 10:17-25
The one chosen as king had hidden among the baggage.
Do you see him whom the LORD has chosen? There is none like him among all the people.
4. This appears to be a reference to the instructions of Moses in Deuteronomy 17:14-20.
Two prohibitions:
Do not acquire horses from Egypt
Do not multiply wives.
Obey the Word of God.
Make a copy of the book of the law for the king.
5. Elsewhere in the law in Deuteronomy 8:1
That he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.
6. The Ammonites Besiege Jabesh - gilead
1 Samuel 11:1-4
When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, they reported the matter in the ears of the people, and all the people wept aloud.
7. Saul’s response
1 Samuel 11:
And the Spirit of God rushed upon Saul when he heard these words, and his anger was greatly kindled.
8. The kingdom is renewed
1 Samuel 11:12-15
Not a man shall be put to death this day, for today the LORD has worked salvation in Israel.
Conclusions:
1. First and foremost we need to set our hearts to listen to what God says about who we are and what we are called to do.
2. We need to set their hearts to seek and serve the Lord.
3. As men and women of faith we need to trust in the Lord whatever the circumstances and challenges we face.
4. And last of all we need to be obedient to the word of the Lord in whatever we understand his will to be.
