Song # 955.2 from Our Gospel In Song Collection by Col Johnston. We read in Luke chapter 1 that Mary’s song is a song of praise to God. Mary was chosen by God to give birth to Jesus, the Son of Man, our Saviour, while Elizabeth gave birth to John (the Baptist) some 6 months prior to the birth of Jesus.
Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord” (Luke 1:46), “and my Spirit rejoices in God my Saviour” (Luke 1:47), “for He has been mindful of the humble state of His servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed” (Luke 1:48), “for the Mighty One has done great things for me - holy is His name” (Luke 1:49). “His mercy extends to those who fear Him, from generation to generation” (Luke 1:50). “He has performed mighty deeds with His arm, He has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts” (Luke 1:51). “He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble” (Luke 1:52). “He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty” (Luke 1:53). “He has helped His servant Israel, remembering to be merciful” (Luke 1:54), “to Abraham and his descendants for ever, even as He said to our fathers” (Luke 1:55). Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home (Luke 1:56). When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son (Luke 1:57). The son was called ‘John’ (Luke 1:60).
