Song # 971.1 from Our Gospel In Song Collection by Col Johnston. In the Book of Matthew we read in chapter 5 that Jesus tells us to share with one another, not just with brothers, but with our neighbors as well, and that we should love our enemies. But as humans, we can find these commands extremely difficult to follow. How many of us truly love our neighbors and would give freely to strangers? And how many of us could forgive our enemies for their persecution of us?
An Eye For An Eye -
when Jesus was teaching He said: “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth’ ” (Matthew 5:38). “But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also” (Matthew 5:39). “And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well” (Matthew 5:40). “If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles” (Matthew 5:41). “Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you” (Matthew 5:42).
Love For Enemies –
Jesus also said, “You have heard it said ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy’” (Matthew 5:43). “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44), “that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and unrighteous” (Matthew 5:45). “If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even tax collectors doing that?” (Matthew 5:46). “And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more for others? Do not even pagans do that?” (Matthew 5:47). “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Matthew 5:48).
Thought for today: the richest people in the world are those who invest in heaven.
Thought for the future: no-one is more secure than those in God's hands. Where will you spend your eternity?
