A foolish son is ruin to his father, and a wife's quarreling is a continual dripping of rain. — Proverbs 19:13

So this text has some strong imagery in it.

But there are three special notes here that will help us find a better meaning of this proverb. First, the verb "quarrel" connotes more than just nagging. It implies antisocial behavior. Something irritating to everyone. Second, "continual dripping" conveys more than just a leaky faucet in the bathroom. It's a perpetual drip that has a catastrophic effect on everyone and everything. Third, this entire section of wisdom references a man's public reputation. Therefore we should conclude that this verse does as well.

Thus the truth in the text today is this — our family, a son or a wife, can have a net positive or negative effect on a man, as a husband, father, and leader.

But the catch is this. We can too. A father and husband can have the same positive or negative effects.

So today, make an effort to have a net positive effect on those you love. Try bringing home a small gift. Serve in some small way. Send an encouraging text. Publically praise your child or wife. Or look them in the eye and tell them you love them. For by doing a simple and small act of kindness, you may discover that most days the net contribution is more negative than positive, so let's change that today.
