This sermon is a part 2 continuation of the previous sermon on "the Retreat of Jesus" that discusses why Jesus withdrew from his enemies to compassionately minister to thousands on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. This sermon investigates the quotation by Matthew of
Isaiah 42:1-4 and explains its meaning from the original Hebrew. What is revealed is an incredible contrast between the first coming of Jesus (where He was a Gentle Savior who gave His life for us on the cross), compared to His second coming where He will come as the Global Judge and adjudicate the world with perfect justice (see the description of Jesus as Judge in
Revelation 1:5-16). Matthew shows Jesus partially fulfilled
Isaiah 42:1-4 when He withdrew and did not retaliate or boisterously speak out, argue, or fight with his enemies who were trying to kill Him. Matthew is offering proof from the Old Testament Scriptures that Jesus indeed is the Messiah, as Isaiah also lists four "servant songs" (
Isaiah 42:1-4,
49:1-6,
50:4-9, and the most well known 52:13-53:12) predicting the Jewish Messiah would come the first time as a servant/slave who would suffer and give his life as a ransom for sinners to be forgiven (
Matthew 20:28/
Isaiah 53:5-6).
Isaiah 53 similarly to
Isaiah 42:1-4 speaks of Jesus' incredible and perfect self-control over his speech even when He was being oppressed and afflicted. "Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth."
Isaiah 42:1-4 therefore shows that Jesus is Judge, Jesus is Gentle, Jesus is Merciful, and Jesus is Hope because while Jesus was and is merciful, gentle, and compassionate, He is also appointed by God to judge the world and ultimately lead justice to victory when He returns and establishes the Kingdom of God on earth.
